Unique to HC? Member Praise and Comparison

I've been on a lot of boards.. then again I think 1 is a pretty large number.. anyway, never have I experienced the praise of former members as I have here. Nor have I ever seen people been so obviously compared to their previous counterparts, missed by many.

I could list names, but if you're on one of the first 4 pages in the member list by post count, you're likely included.

This distinct feature of HC has its ups and downs, and I'm not going to really try to start a discussion on this part. It's a part of what makes this community what it is. If I should make a guess, I'd say it's due to low member count, yet many of these are long time members and finally to do with how slowly things here changes, yet they do change.

What I am wondering, though, is if this bathing in former glory to a point where members can even be compared to people they'll never meet is a rarity? In other words, how unique is this feature to HC, compared to other fora, in your experience?

I'm not sure I follow, I have not experienced people being compared directly or indirectly with one another. And from what I understand you seem to draw some kind of co-relation between post count and how well received people are or how much "respect" (or whatever quality you give them that makes them worth being compared to) they have.
I don't think they're dependent on one another. Not one bit.
The reason the titans of this forum are usually (actually almost exclusively if I'm not mistaken) remembered fondly is because they usually are pretty ****ing cool people. Obviously this isn't a flawless "defense" but you know I like to think it does help, from what I've seen on other fora it could be a whole lot worse.

When you stay on a forum initially it's usually because you like the information you have access to and find the local community to be helpful in all things subject X. So you stay discuss and do all things HoMM related (in our specific case). Eventually you get curious and you take a look around on all the other parts that don't strictly or even remotely relate to the original subject. This transition is what makes or breaks new members, in my opinion. Either you're interested in the other things you find or you just find the people you engage with interesting enough to stick around.
Like you said, we're a small community but I'd like to think it's not because we're boring but because we have (or had) a dedicated core of great people. It helps set a good standard and forge new comers into better members. People who mindlessly troll or just want to @!#* around can't be all that excited to join this place because there isn't a lot of that going on here.

So to answer your question, any respect people have for the people on the top post count page is hardly based on numbers. People (usually!) have a high post count because they have things worth saying and it is amazing to have them around and talk to them. Not the other way around. Not that there aren't exceptions to the rule especially if you take the first 4 pages we have a couple of legendary heroes who might not have existed in the first place for all the quality they brought with them (again this just being my opinion) and then again we have the "small fry" who've made entire subforas prosper through their presence.

Thank you for a well made, well thought out post. I'm glad you put so much into it.

Since a lot of the post focuses on something I didn't intend to say (high post count equals respect), I think I should clear it up now, before the discussions goes in such a direction.

I agree with you, that amount of respect people receive and their post count doesn't have a lot to do with one another. You obviously need to post to become a cherished member and if you're cherished member it's likely you'll participate a lot. What I merely meant was that the majority of the people on the first four pages are well respected. It doesn't mean it's all of the people there, and it doesn't mean anyone outside those first 4 pages aren't (a lot of them are). Only that if you've posted a lot, odds are you're well-respected, exactly for the reasons you state:

The reason I mentioned it was to not have to list any single members as well respected, but merely to demonstrate they exists, a type of "source", I suppose.

I'd like to clarify that I don't think this place is boring. I've spend a great many years here by now, and enjoyed most of the time I spend here.

The thing is that on all the other fora I've been to, this is not a trait I see, at all. Not even in the off topic sections, which is where I often ends when I've been at the given forum for some time.

I wonder, has any of you experienced praise of long gone members at another forum than HC? What would you say its frequency is? Common? Rare?

Hardly. While certain games appeal more to certain groups of people, you still complete nincompoops regardless of how "awesome" a game is. Not to mention that that's a very subjective view of the situation in the first place.

Why of course its subjective, I did say I've been to only two...
And regarding the games, Im pretty certain I have 1% of your gaming experience but in that small narrow world, I've been attracted to certain games, within those games I've met mainly people who share certain personality traits that make them "cooler" than others... For the last year I've been playing only heroes 6 and diablo3 and both heroes 6 and diablo3 have an amazing playerbase, unless you have a certain mindset you're not playing the game/mode..
I think it also has to do with the "scale/popularity" of the game (as in niche community is way cooler coz it requires certain type of a player), Im pretty sure 80% of wow players are douches or smth coz its a game made for masses...

I'm glad you've experienced it elsewhere, the odd thing is that I also only seek fora based on a few games, and among these are both Heroes (hence this place) and Diablo (hence I've been to a couple D2 boards), but I've not experienced these communities to have high praise of people who were before or even at present.
No doubt I've seen awesomeness other places than here, anything but would indeed be odd, but I've not seen the awesomeness linked to the user like I see here, and people being reminiscent about it.

Hey, I just looked at the three first pages in the member list by post count, and DD was the only one with negative QPs. No bias here!

This is one of those forums where I've noticed that a lot of people are quite friendly. There's a lot of banter and it can be a good environment but like every forum, it has to be weighed down by the spammers which of course gets peoples backs up occasionally. My point is that when everything is fine, people are nice but they can turn pretty quickly. I'm a member of a site called Bigfooty which is about Aussie Rules Football (and one of the reasons as to why I've been inactive) and it's pretty much the same there though I suppose it's a little friendlier because a lot of the discussion is about aussie rules as opposed to here where most discussion isn't about what the site is about. If that makes sense.

So basically, this place is pretty friendly but so are many others, it's not unique.

I think HC has become nicer in the past few years, maybe since 2009 or so. When I first joined, there was a lot of mean-spiritedness by HC veterans against noobs. Then Sir_Stiven was banned, and with the release of H5 and the weakening of the H3 tournament scene, that subsided. There was some nastiness in the OSM, though. More recently, though, the only unpleasantness comes from a few occasional trolls, so HC is much nicer.

I think the problem was that your post didn't seem to be very serious in which the thread was meant to be. Remember, this is the Tavern, not VW anymore.

Also take it from me, regardless of whether you are provoked, there is nothing worse then letting your anger get the best of you and to display it on here. Trust me, I've done that myself. Just ignore things that are meant to be negative towards you.
