I just read the question, but I guess everything else is redundant, for there is one answer:

I guess one major theme could be a persons relationship to their own parent of the same gender.
If said parent wasn't there for the child, the child might see him/herself in the role of said parent when it comes to having children, if the person think his/her parents are the norm.

Err, Meroe, "playing God" is something BOTH geenders can do ONLY, when they interact. It's not a "chauvinist" thing.
Now, no discussing that men have used pregnancy as a weapon against women. But that's something else entirely.

I want to have a kid someday, because I feel like life gets so much more pointless, if you don't leave a living impact on the world before you die.
Also, there's no need to "play God" with the opposite sex to raise a kid.

Btw, when do you think the last train leaves the station on that one?
I mean, I say I'm open to the idea but I'm in my mid-thirties, now. I wouldn't be able to say that so comfortably, if I was in my fifties. Having a fifteen year-old kid when you're 65 seems a little bit weird, and I don't mean according to social norms, I mean psychologically, it would feel weird. What is the age that you'll completely stop thinking about having (new) children?

Having kids when you're old is a bad idea. You won't get to spend as much time with them, you'll have less energy, and perhaps most importantly they're more likely to have genetic defects.

Well, I'm 47. No job, no girlfriend, quite a reasonable income.
Only once one of my girlfriends got pregnant. She decided not to have it, I tried to convince her and when I didn't succed I broke up with her (this was about 15 years ago).
Today, a few hours ago, I was making a balance of the positive and negative things in my life and the one I miss the most is not having another chance of becoming a father. Now, I'm imature and I really take poor care of myself, the mother would be in serious trouble. Yet, I think if I found another woman crazy enouch to do it (I found some in the past, only never worked again and we always end up before we had the time for more then a few tryes) I would probably give it another try.
I know hummanity doesn't really need my pool of genes to pass to the next generation (besides my sister has two kids) but I feel not procreating has one of my greatest failures in life.

At this point in my life, I certainly don't. Supposing the world stays as it is now, I certainly don't. My eventual partner - assuming I defy the odds and actually end up having one - would better have some damn good arguments ready if she wants me to breed. See, I wasn't asked if I wanted to live when I was conceived, and knowing now what awaits, I don't want to inflict life on another soul.

I'm not entirely confident the higher risk of genetic defects ought to be relevant for the single individual.
On the other hand, I think the moment the dick falls off, you're too old.

I don't plan to have children. there is really no point in thinking about it when you are single anyway.

or some people think that true happiness is being married with children. so, do they spend their life being miserable until that happens, or what?

One of the problems I see raising a kid is having enough time to do that. I feel like I'm going to end up a workaholic. I'm never going to want to stop climbing the ladder. So what I see as most tricky is somehow combining those ambitions while still being there for your kid.
