So we got Necro town screen while I was away.
Like the previous 2 ones I don't mind it. It's ok. To me important thing is that it's in line with art direction of units and other town screens, so that it fits. That being said ... why so green when units themselves are not? It's a strange one.
This aside my bigest complaint isn't the buildings or style etc. but poor usage of screen space Most buildings are clustered to the centre, while there's lots of empty space for giant legs. But it's ok, I still like Academy screen the least so far. And I suspect this will remain.
And as for the usual stuff:
- lack of civilian buildings
- no animation (creatures being shown outside their dwellings like in H1)
- strange placement of buildings
- buildings that can not be accessed by normal means
- as well as defiying standards and rules of architecture
This are (and I suspect will remain) shared with ALL town screens. And I personaly don't pay much atention to that. I'm content that we atleast have town screens for the most part. Other stuff is just nit-picking.
As for the spider theme ... let me tell you something new. Something secret Ubi dosen't want you to know.
You ready?
Ashan Necropolis is spider themed. They worship the spider godess. I know. I was totaly shocked aswell. I was ofc totaly expecting medieval black knight's style Necropolis, with no cartoony elements, but more of H3 "photo-realistic" graphic style. Specialy when comparing to other two town screens. I was totaly taken aback, when I saw this. It dosen't fit at all.

I actually like it.. More than the other two at least.
But I do see the issues with "realism"; meaning access to the various buildings. But well, it looks pretty..

In that case there's no problem. Most of them claim Necropolis is ugly ... so that makes it good, right ?

My problem isn't that the townscreen is ugly or pretty, nor the rediculous spider legs. No, my (main) problem is that the buildings just don't fit.
It looks as if someone build that humongous scaffold from a light-grey type of stone, but then ran out of it when he planned on building the structures on it. On top of that he used different kind of stone for the different structures (and different architects). These problems make it look like it's a military camp from an RTS instead of a town.
Maybe it would've looked better if the big base ziggurat was an old shantiri ruin, complete with old ruined houses/buildings.
Those buildings on the left cliffs look like they belong there, they really fit into the background. That's the way the other buildings should blend in too.
My 2nd problem with this town is that the looks of the buildings give me no clue about their functionality. Also because they are fairly similar in design I'm afraid it will take quite some experience with H7 necro to be able to tell which unit dwellings have been build from just a glance at the townscreen. Imo this is an important feature of the TS, which the necro screen unfortunately lacks.

Actually, the whole idea of only using military outposts in Heroes 7 as opposed to towns has had me thinking a bit about some variety ingame. Something that was already partially implemented ingame, but that might be fleshed out a little more. And in fact, it's an idea that was already used in Total War: Medieval 2.
Basically, in Heroes 6 they already introduced the concept of a Fort, except in Heroes 6, the Fort didn't have anything intrinsic of itself. The only function it had was that it could be used to recruit troops from creature dwellings in its area of control.
Especially with all the discussions about economy (see the main discussion topic), this might integrate nicely with the concept of the capitol as well. So, why not integrate this into something bigger? In our own world, it wasn't uncommon to have forts and castles at easily defended areas, without towns, while not all towns had a castle or fort nearby - especially the smaller ones. At the same time, villages and settlements were usually formed at strategic locations, which were later fortified.
The idea is that a village forms the base on which to expand. It has the basic buildings, but eventually the player is forced to make a choice:
- If you want to have your economy boosted, the village has to be specialised towards a Town. This means creature production capabilities are relatively low, both in terms of weekly growth and in available tiers, but income and resource production is increased. It is home to non-military buildings. The market might be expanded (count for 2, instead of 1) and the Resource Silo is only available in Towns, not in Forts. The Mage Guild is also only found here. The Town has a Town Screen, which really shows a place where actual people of the corresponding faction would live.
- If you want to have your troops boosted, the village has to be specialised towards a Fort. This means that the economic gain may not be as large, but it has the full range of creatures for the faction available, both in weekly growth and in Tiers available. The Fort has a Fort Screen, which is really laid out like a military outpost (like we have now in the screens shown of Heroes 7, minus the non-military buildings).
Differences between troops hired at a Town versus those hired from a Fort may be in weekly growth, whether or not you can have an upgraded version from them and perhaps even be unique. If we take Heroes2 for instance, Peasants may only be recruitable in a Town, not a Fort. In return, Cavaliers may only be recruitable at a Fort. Some creatures may require certain buildings to be present in your Kingdom; for instance, you can only recruit Crusaders from your Forts if at least one of your Towns has a Cathedral.
I'm not sure if eventually, you should be able to expand a Town or Fort to a City, which essentially covers both at once. Maybe at most one, just like you can only have one Capitol. This City has a City screen, which may yet have a different layout than either of the two.
Of course, this probably means a map would need on average somewhat more villages, I guess roughly twice as many as previous games had. It gives more adventure map objects and points of contestment, in any case.

i completely agree, actually. it was a pretty cool concept in medieval 2 (that i didn't see much of 'cause only played mods) and i feel it could work very well with heroes basic mechanics. i think that the capitol should get a bit of both in order to differentiate itself more from the other towns and make it an actual center of the empire.
