Israel is full of people NOT getting along with each other, not really a healthy starting point, don't you think?

Nation, people, nation. Not state. Not that there are no quarrels in the Jewish world. Big ones at that. But every nation has its downsides.

One cant ignore, compared to their population, the amount of Jewish people that are significant in liberal arts, science, Nobel prize winning etc is tremendous, up to a point to flame conspiracy theories about it. Some strong work ethics must indeed be involved.

everyone else here except noobx and myself picked people who would make significant changes to whatever world they were to inhabit next. lol.

i forgot about those countries that recycle nearly everything. so, based on this graphic:

my 5 would be:

1. sweden
2. norway
3. costa rica
4. germany
5. denmark

just in case "tribal indians" doesn't qualify.

Well, if I have to pick some national Übermensch who is an incarnation of only the predominant good qualities of that nation (or rather the best of that nation), it will probably look like this:

Art: Italy ('cause wine and women produce fine art, probably even in space).

Technology: Germany (assuming mostly engineering).

Science: Russia (Surprise? They are certainly behind US and Japan in this regard but not because US and Japan natively breed scientists, 'tis about money which wouldn't matter all that much in space).

Philosophy: Some German-Greek-Chinese mongrels or nobody.

Overall: China (the general historical Chinese is an awfully persistent being culturally and talented in many areas).

My thinking was similar to Joonas': the first two countries that sprang to mind were Germany and Japan. Both are highly technological nations with superb work ethics.

Well I can see the reason for mentioning Germany, but when I picked USA and Japan but not Germany, it was mostly because Germany no longer seems to have the leading role in technology and science it did starting from about 200 years ago and lasting until some 50 years ago (well probably until all the major scientists got driven out up to or during WW2).

When you look at recent scientific publication ratio US is number one by far, followed by China, UK and then Germany and Japan. But they are nowhere close, I guess the amount of investement + immigration and attracting brain power + scientific publication language becoming English (it's an incredible advantage to be able to read so much source material in your own language) creates a combo, that is very though to beat. So, although the average Joe can be quite anti-intellectual and infamously ignorant on many matters, especially if it conflicts with religion, the intellectual elite of Americans are first-class people in their fields.

It still boils down to money anyway, but not saying is bad, just trying to explain.

America is a powerful catalyst, very attractive financially for every brilliant person, offering to your already developed aptitudes a fertile ground and not offering any social assistance for the mediocre parasite, unlike Europe.

Take for example France, a scientist salary is 6 times or more lower than in US. In Russia is 50 times lower. Most brilliants minds from east already emigrated in America, if you look through those 1 million scientific publications, you will probably find half of them being from other countries.

Yes, investment both in the scientist and the research/tech is fundamental. Economic growth is most usually followed by achievements in other areas, just like in industrial UK or early bourgeois investing in art in Renaissance Italy.

I guess I do to, in certain ways at least. Still, Germany didn't make my top 5, even though they would be in my top 10.

I think Zeno's and partially Noob's are the only possible intelligent answers. Picking individuals because some hypothetical blood ties with their nation characteristics is weird and irrelevant; also bringing culture on a escape doomsday mission is absurd.

You could just ask what nations we prefer for their global achievements.

I just picked the top 5 contributors in history.

This is a foolhardy approach. You're building a new society from what they are today. Not from what they were. There's also the big problem with what were the values that caused them to survive and contribute to history such as they did. Most of them(not all mind you, authoritarianism can be very handy with limited resources) are pretty directly agains the values you'd need(or want, as in my case) in a new society. Chinese lack of respect for all human life? No thanks. Indian tribablistic values? No thanks.

I went for what would give the best quality of life for the people in the new society. They won't have any competition from neighbouring countries(unless aliens attack, omg!) so the only issues will be internal issues within the community. There's two ways to go about this, homogenice the whole population or force them to learn how to work together. The tech trio already breaks apart the homogenous population so tolerance becomes important for a successfull nation.

That's not what the question was though. It was biggest contributors and preserving all that they did. If you're on a mission for survival you just take four small rich & high-end European nations (Luxembourg, Switzerland, Monaco, Norway) for your civic solidarity & stability, and then the US as your meatshield to fight off Klingon warbirds. Everybody else gets canned.
