Scared by Russia, Sweden and Finland Make War Pact

http://www.ibtimes.com/scared-russia-sweden-finland-make-war-pact-1821906

The defense ministers of Sweden and Finland announced Thursday a new military cooperation agreement that could see the two countries go to war together in the event of an attack. The new relationship comes amid ongoing aggressive behavior from Russia in the region. Neither country is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) alliance, whose charter stipulates that an attack on one member is an attack on all, mandating a reaction from every allied nation.

The level of the cooperation is still to be finalized, and it may include increased communication and shared military bases.

“This gives us a concrete ability to work together, first and foremost in peacetime but also in times of crisis should we choose to,” said Finland’s defense minister Carl Haglund to the TT news agency.

However, his Swedish counterpart, Peter Hultqvist, said that the cooperation was not a formal alliance.

“By planning for various crisis scenarios, we create preparations to use them in a given situation. Whether or not we end up implementing these proposals is a decision that has to be made at government level in that situation and then confirmed by the parliaments in the two countries,” said Hultqvist to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, while adding that the governments would decide which proposals to move forward with in the near future.

Even though Sweden and Finland are both neutral countries, not formally allied with any other, the pair signed a so-called host nation support agreement with NATO in 2014. The agreement means that NATO troops can deploy inside the country.

The decision to cooperate comes after a year of increased Russian aggressiveness in the Baltic region, with Russian warplanes flying very close to European airspace. The Swedish military also suspects that up to four Russian submarines may have been operating off the coast of Stockholm in January.

Those events, along with the war in East Ukraine, have swayed public opinion in Sweden, with most Swedes now in favor of joining NATO. Finland, on the other hand, still opposes membership.

Looks like those two so-called "oh-so-vewy-vewy-liberal" northern countries are joining the list of paranoid policing countries that pretentiously believe Russian is behaving with belligerance

I'm not saying you're wrong, but are you sure? This guy would be suiciding his journalistic credibility if he was just completely making all of this up. I find your post a little hard to believe. This was very, very recently published so there might not be much about it yet.

I posted this here once I saw the article because I know alot of Swedes and Finns hang here.

We are increasing military cooperation with Sweden, the preliminary report on how it could be done starts to be finished. We are talking about the year 2023. There is nothing Russia related about it, it is convenient and saves expenses for two similar smaller countries to work together in the same region. The reality : "it may include increased communication and shared military bases". But the article calls it a "war pact". Horrible journalism - misleading at best.

Neither could I couldn't find any quote saying Russia is the reason this. If it has been said in the Swedish media at some point I can't know, but even then it has been taken out of context for sure...

This isn't even a "war pact", just a pledge for more cooperation

And pretty sure this kind of thing has "been on the table" for like, 15-20 years now

Fearmongering is very fashionable in the Western media these days. You could also read that Russia will invade the Baltic states pretty much tomorrow because of reasons.

you don't think fearmongering has been a staple of any popular media since human beings figured out how to "spread the word"?

Nah, in the Russian media you can read that NATO prepares for war, i.e. the same thing in the opposite direction. But nobody cares about the Russian media in the West, hence my comment.

An interesting fact - new slogan of CNN is (I am not joking) "Holy crap, we're all gonna die". I think that sums up pretty well the attitude of any mainstream TV news channel in the whole world...

There's nothing new in Finland bliz. This kind of cooperation happened before. It has nothing to do with Russia being a threat. It's about joint hardware and the long debate about joining NATO or not.

Doesn't make for as good headlines, I know

Have not heard anything about this yet but it sounds alright. Official NATO membership would risk taking our precious neutrality away but we should help our nordic neighbours out of solidarity.

Sweden hasn't really been neutral since WW2 and especially not since joining the European Union, which means we are obligated to assist another EU country should it be attacked. One can also philosophically question if it is even possible to be truly neutral. Choosing not to act is also an action and a choice. As Edmund Burke put it. "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing".

Assist with what?A few old rifles from the 60s? Let's face it, when it takes 14 months for Sweden to mobilize its entire defense, we certainly got little to contribute with outside our borders (as if we can even protect them).

Sweden is contributing to military operations in both Mali and Afghanistan. We can contribute with our air force, intelligence, navy (we have some very advanced submarines) and probably most importantly, geography. Sweden already has an agreement with Nato which allows them to station their troops here. I agree much more should be spent on the defense budget though,

Well in theory, should we both go to war, Sweden could provide us with good assistance on the naval and air areas.

Granted, with the weakness of it's defenses, I'm not sure if they could actually be deployed to help us or would be hard pressed to make up for the starved land forces
