Naga Biology

Inspired by some off-hand comments in the main discussion thread (and my bird recently having a couple of eggs) i feel this could be an interesting topic to discuss: How do Nagas "work"? How do their reproduction work and how do they care for their young etc?

so i'm gonna start of by guessing they probably work a lot like snakes do: their body turn into a snake's above where their human reproductive organs would be located so i feel this is a safe assumption to make. what does this entail exactly? most likely they lay eggs. What would disprove this hypothesis? i don't know, i'm no expert.

second thought: how do they care for their young? Probably close guarding of the eggs and then a very human upbringing. based on the fact that the females have boobs meaning they produce milk which would then be used to feed their young.

just throwing around ideas here, thoughts?

Having breast means nothing if said breast have no nipples.
I agree that most of it would likely be very reptilian. But I highly doubt Naga suckle their infants. Breasts on Naga are decorative only, I expect.

large lumps on a creature living underwater with no usage seems very suspect to me. i agree (though not accept) that if they lived above ground but as is, no way. They would drag and slow her down to much without giving any positive effects. there is no doubt they serve a purpose.

i think it might be worth noting that they also, based on the small amount of breasts (2), that they would have a low amount of offspring per batch.

Based on Akasha's and Yume's bios and their SoD storyline finale (H6), explicitly the line "give birth to stillborn children" I think that Nagas do not lay eggs.

The tailfeathers on a male Peafowl (because censors) serve no practical purpose either. In fact, they greatly hinder them.
Evolution would dictate that the males with the more obstructing tailfeathers would reproduce less. Except we all know that that is not the case. Female Peafowl love them some tail(feathers). So the males with the biggest, most impractical tail-feathers get mates most easily.

There is no reason to assume this cannot work similarly for Naga.
Yes, breasts seem to serve an underwater species no practical purpose. But are you gonna fault Naga for liking some cleavage on their girls?

Eggs can hatch stillborn offspring. I assume laying an egg for a human-sized species is as much of a problem as giving birth is.
The choice of words do not convince me. Don't quote the bios at me, I've read them.
Untill I get official confirmation, I will choose to believe Naga lay eggs.

yes, actually. Having large tail feathers that hinders the peacock also signals his health well: good and large feathers mean a healthy male which will result in good offspring. they can also be used to scare predators. there is also the fact that it's the male peacocks that have the hindering traits. Female peacocks are small and inconspicuous since that would allow them to hide and avoid trouble easier. Females carry the eggs and are as such much more important for the survival of the species and as such, does not get traits that would be such a huge hindrance.

(did that come out ok? trying to improve how i present stuff.)

It's exactly the choice of words which convinced me otherwise. Don't worry, I won't quote bios
Erm, believe it if you want ofc, no one's denying you of this ^_^ I just expressed my opinion without pointing to anyone.

Well, out of all natural element based races, nagas certainly are the weirdest ones. I mean,  we've got dwarves, elves, humans and... nagas. They kinda stand out, being the only ones without two legs. One unaware of Ashan's lore could confuse them with Wizards' beastmen.

It did. But the point I tried to make is that species can develop sexually atractive traits that serve no other practical purpose, even to the point of being a hindrance.
In general you are correct, the females of the species are the choosy sex and have most to loose when choosing an inferior mate. However there are species for which the reverse is true. Where the males are the choosy sex, it is the females who compete. Naga may very well have been a species now or in the past, where females competed for males.

Doesn't matter. Evolution does not stop. From the moment the Gods were done, Evolution took over. Unless the Gods actively kept their chosen races from evolving. In which case Evolution took over the moment the Gods were locked out of the physical world.

Actually, we don't know how many years the Mythic Age lasted.
Sarah was more than 3000yo in H6, but hasn't seen the Wars of Creation (in fact, she was born during the Shantiri empire's height).

True, I was going more off of human evolution in this case as that is what nagas are closer to also they have not been extensively breed by humans.

but what would a pair of lumps without purpose actually mean to a male naga? it makes some sense in human culture since breasts has to do with milk production and as such is something where you would benefit from choosing some over others. as i said, those tail feathers has some purpose (showing health and intimidating rivals/predators). Naga lumps with no nipples doesn't have a purpose and that's where i can't agree with you.

deep Naga horns on the other hand...
