Quite well, actually, for hyenas live in deserts as well.

When i first played H3 i was mystified why there were "hyena-men" in a swamp town. And i still don't feel that they should belong in a swamp/jungle faction. Desert faction is a lot better fit.

Yeah, probably some sort of melee Lizardman would fit just fine in H3 Fortress as tier 1 unit. A lot of things didn't make sense in H3 though.

That being said, Gnolls are not just Hyenas, they can live everywhere and I am ok with them being in that town.

First impressions of the H7 Stronghold Line-up

Core Creatures
-------------------------

Crusher
Abilities: Demonic Lineage, Unfettered
Basic melee walker. The artwork has very strong desert, Arabic feel and takes inspiration from a Duel of Champions card Sahaar Brute. Demonic Lineage gives them resistance to fire (but not immunity) and vulnerability to light magic. It’s hard to predict the correct multipliers but in H6 it was 10%. Their ability Unfettered (same as Golems from Academy) prevents the opponent from decreasing his initiative or speed. I don’t know how strong this ability is since Stronghold has 3 shooters (+ Harpies that have Strike and Return) and may decide to play defensively. A shield may indicate rather defensive stats (compared to other Stronghold units).

Fury
Abilities: Strike and Return, No Retaliation
Exactly the same as H6 equivalent but this time the scantily clad bird-lady is actually a tad of a looker. From the released images we know that they have high Initiative. Thanks to Strike and Return and No Retaliation they work as shooters and in H7, because of flanking, they might actually be better than shooters. I suspect a rather fragile body but decent damage.

Gnoll Hunter
Abilities: Opportunity Shot
Goblin replacements - core shooters probably with a range penalty. I have really hard time deciphering their ability: Opportunity Shot (If one of their allies is attacking, they always try to use the opening to throw a dagger in the flank of the targeted foe). It may activate only in limited range around Gnoll Hunters. I’d expect low defense/HP and relatively high initiative (but not as high as Harpy).

Elite Creatures
-------------------------

Centaur Marauder
Abilities: Mobile Shooter, Maneuver
It’s almost the same as it’s H6 counterpart which is fine since H6 Centaurs design was pretty good. Centaur Marauders will be able to move and shoot and move back and then retaliate (providing that there is space to move back – if not they will simply retaliate probably by kicking the enemy unit and dealing half damage because of melee penalty).

Venomous Wyvern
Abilities:   Regeneration, Resistance to Earth, Acid Breath
A new take on H5 Foul Wyvern. While the artwork is great, the model looks kinda like a diminutive dragon. I really don’t like the Regeneration ability. In maps this may encourage players to send them towards enemy and then at the end of the battle use end turn to heal them up in order to avoid loses – a very boring and repetitive gameplay. In duel mode this ability shouldn’t be that strong since at certain point one should be able to target the unit down and not allow to take advantage of regeneration.  In any ways, Regeneration is better on defensive units and I don’t think that Wyvern will be such. Resistance to Earth gives some protection from spells of this school. Again it’s hard to predict the exact modifier. The last ability: Acid Breath is a simple damage over time. In H6, DoT was usually 20% of normal attack and lasted 2-3 turns.

Basilist Rider
Abilities: Petrification, Long Range
We had a very similar unit in H5 – Dark Rider. Apparently a Goblin is riding a lizard-like Basilisk. Petrification seems like an active ability that gives you a chance to turn an enemy creature into stone. Long Range is probably a passive ability that allows Riders to avoid retaliation when attacking a “medium” creature. Since we don’t have “medium” as a size I think it means a 1x1 creature and not large, 2x2 ones.

Champion Creatures
-------------------------

Enrage Cyclops
Abilities: Demonic Lineage, Sweeping Bash, Fiery Eye
The first Stronghold Champions doesn’t differ much from its H6 self. Demonic Lineage gives them resistance to fire and vulnerability to light magic. Sweeping Bash is, I think, an activated ability (possibly with a cooldown) and should effect friendly creatures as well. Fiery Eye makes him a shooter, maybe with a range penalty. In H6 creature that took range damage from Cyclops they also got Damage over Time effect – Burning Rage. It’s hard to say if Fiery Eye will also include some DoT effects.

Ancient Behemoth
Abilities: Piercing Claws, Mighty Pounce
Behemoths come as a bow towards old fans of the series. They look like a white King Kongs with tusks. Piercing Claws reduce the defense of enemy units when Behemoths attack them (in H3 the reduction was huge – 80%, making Ancient Behemoths stronger in 1v1 duel than Archangels). Mighty Pounce is an activated ability (hard to tell if there will be any cooldown but I’d expect one – sth like 3 turns). A similar ability can be found in H6 (Crushing Leap +5% per each tile jumped and area of effect damage, leap cannot be longer than twice the creature movement).

Thoughts on the whole army
-------------------------
First thing that comes to my mind is that I don’t see obvious synergies in the line-up. Maybe between Gnoll and Harpy (you attack to expose enemy to flanking attack by Gnolls). 2-3 shooters and Harpies will probably make Stronghold player to stay back and wait for the enemy to come to them under heavy fire. There is a lot of No Retaliation abilities in Stronghold and in H7 (which makes Ulimited Retaliation very weak – Silverback)

Disclaimer:  Please note that I’m exclusively a duels player and I stopped playing maps

You assume that Regeneration will resurrect fallen Wyverns as well. I rather think it will work like the healing of Wights/Wraiths and Trolls in Heroes3, where the top creature of the stack gets healed to full each turn. Fallen units of such a stack aren't resurrected there, either.

Well for me personally this is the best Stronghold line up ever. I never really liked the faction due to various reasons(Ubisoft Stronghold was always too orcish for example).

But this one boasts so many mythical creatures and interesting abilities it might as well take an equal first place together with the Academy.

Centaurs, Harpies and Cyclopsi are pretty much the same as in Heroes 6 - but visually much more 'clean', defined  and appealing to me.

Goblins were always just useless and not inspiring creature overall. its ability in Heroes 6 was seldom used. Them riding Basilisks - now that is a great idea! Very fitting for them to feel 'brave and stronk' when out of reach and astride on such a powerful creature! And finally basilisks are back!!

Gnoll is much better Core shooter in my opinion. Looks great, throwing knives remind me of Orcs with throwing axes Hyenas are original and cool too

Wyverns are so much better then Shamans - in Heroes 6 they were just another melee orcs but with an ability to cast every other turn.. boring. Pao-kai are too strong to be Elite so choice of having Wyverns instead is a good choice. They look just like wyverns should in my opinion(smaller version of drake + poison)

Could be blind too but still good.

And Ye...I mean BEHEMOTHS! So much 'EPIC' in a Single Creature!! Just great wild MIGHT feel it has...

So I was disappointed in Haven(way too many Humans) and Necropolis(H6 copy-paste) but Academy and Stronghold are both just great!

Stronghold townscreen is the best so far also.

Looking forward to Sylvan and Dungeon.

Both of you are right. I should have phrased it better, in order to stress out what I meant... Apologies, I was in a hurry
I miss the good old rock-throwing. Ok the eye, the goblin-throwing etc that were present in past installments, they're ok and make Cyclops an overall awsome unit. But, for me, rock throwing is sth inextricably linked to Cyclops.
Maybe that's because I am Greek
Anyway, it was my fault I was misunderstood.

Stronghold is my favorite faction currently. It is fresh, varied yet cohesive. The only unit I don't like is the Centaur. I am not a fan of those abilities nor of the looks.

But Basiliks are AWESOME. As are Gnolls, Wyvers and Behemoth.

Updated the main post, to coincide with the reveal of Stronghold. At first I wanted to remove most stuff, but decided to keep some, since I couldn't find it on official website. Anyways, any moderator should fell free to PM me, regarding that, if you have any further ideas or complaints.

Yes I SHOULD do it faster, I suppose, and I apologize for that, but I couldn't access the official web page till today, and I was in a state of deep shock, after I discovered that the Green Dragon, of all creatures, will not fly in H7.

Too long to read again for me right now, but this reminds me the debate between Sleeping Sun and Stevie during the Sylvan lineup vote, when everybody was talking about gameplay while we had no relevant information at all on that aspect, maybe this was mentioned there somewhere.

However, it was clearly stated on the dev blog that the Green Drag was a walker.

But let's not derail the thread.

I agree ... I shouldn't derail. I wasn't around in HC yet, when the votes for Sylvan were up. I just joined at same time when post discussion was here. Before that, I wasn't keeping up with news about HoMM series at all. It was just that time that I discovered, H7 exists . I also created new account with official site, due to forgetting password and ... well I wanted new acc.

Still the fury seemed cool to me, and I was actualy happy ... untill now. Anyways, I am now over that, and will accept Godzilla. It all depends how it will be implemented.

For now, I belive my favourite faction will be either Stronghold or Dungeon. I'll see when that's revealed, (Black Dragon will fly, I hope ) but Sylvan, even tho I had high hopes, will likely not be the one. Stronghold is to me, the best overall so far. So here are my taughts on Stronghold:

* I realy like the gnoll in place of goblin. Gnoll is desert being and it fits more than in swamp or watter faction. I also like the model very much, kukri is cool, even tho, idk why he's wielding it in icepick grip. It works I suppose, but I wouldn't hold it that way by deafult. Oportunity shot is interasting, but I will have to see it before I know if it's good or not.

* Harpy is classic, strike and return + no retaliation for upgrade. Nothing great, but nothing bad. It's borring in a way, but I would be dissapointed if she wasn't here.

* Brute: melee core tank for creeping. I don't know what his ability, Unfettered does.

* Basilisk Rider: Is good looking, even  tho description says he's ugly. Has petrification, which is good. Long range is something that makes me confused. What is medium sized creature? Do we have 3 creature sizes this time around?

* I don't like Wyvern's model very much. Idk it's too fat, I suppose? But otherwise no complaints. Wyvern is a good creature.

* Ah centaur. The legendary creature that's half horse and half human. But this time, she's half antelope? Is that still centaur? I would say no. If you put there another animal, then there's another hybrid, and nother creature. If all half humans half animals would be centaurs, then minotaurs, satyrs, gnolls etc. should also be called centaur .

* Cyclops: That's the best Ubi version of cyclops to date, if you ask me. I like it better than Behemoth in some ways. He still fires laser from his eye tho I wonder where they got that idea? Watching to many X-Men, are we, Erwan? Still not a proper Cyclops from greek legend tho, but for Ashan, it's good.

* Behemoth: I like that normal version is brown, while upgrade is white, altho I would prefer grey. He reminds me of sloth too much. Otherwise a great unit. Armor piercing and mighty pounce seem terrifying abilities.

* Town screen: Is best town screen so far, if you ask me. It's far from perfect, but if you compare it to Haven (which even Erwan himself dosen't like very much!) or Academy, I feel it's a huge improvement.

With so many walker champions, flying will be that more special and powerfull I belive. Champions that fly will be more highly appreciated I belive... But we'll see.

To be honest I am boring, because what I would like to see as their mounts is a huge Kodo beast looking thing but Warcraft or HoMM5.. I do not like changes.

But I just dont think that a goat is big and bad enough for stronghold.

This itteration of the Cyclops, especialy the upgrade, reminds me very, very much of a Plaguebearer of Nurgle. One may also look Here. One without any disease, which is the epitome of Nurgle's Blessing but I cannot shake the feeling that this Cyclops is heavily inspired by this Warhammer Daemon.
