Personally, I see a lot of potential in Ashan... or rather, saw. I'm just not sure whether it even can be fully explored anymore and whether the 'what it could be' isn't mere fiction by now. Whatever it is that could be portrayed in that world appears to be still missing, with so much of it defined so strongly by Heroes VI - which is strange, because it also had good games, such as Clash of Heroes or Duel of Champions.
Ultimately, I ended up slightly disappointed in Ubisoft, but I don't really like NWC's style either. As it stands now, I'd welcome potential new settings with both sci-fi and fantasy elements. Mind you, I'm not talking about the original form of science fantasy here - for example, I'd keep a wide universe with several planets - but in which magic is seen as an asset or a force present in it, rather than disguised technology. For example, instead of demons being "demons, but actually aliens", they could be monstrosities spawned by magical energy or some superior being's will, an evil force created by malice that either spread between worlds or was created in many worlds independently.
I'm not sure. There's lot of that can be done in this franchise, regardless of whether it's Ashan or another setting, but I'm just starting to doubt that current developer teams have the abilities needed to make it work. It also doesn't help that most fan suggestion, sometimes even demands tend to be contradictory, chaotic or unrealistic - some of them are right, some of them are wrong... From my perspective it looks like no one can really decide what these games should be like, no one has the quite 'right' picture - and that does include myself.

Maybe because both games were created by Ubisoft in Canada?

well please realize that actually is the premise of the NWC universe, some things that seem like magic are powered by technology but there are also many examples of real, bona fide magical forces (like the elemental lords) out there, it is not as if all magic that ever existed in that entire universe is really just tech from the Ancients lol
it is believed the NWC "demons who are actually aliens" ARE monstrosities created by superior beings, namely the Ancients' enemies the Creators lol

Quite possibly, yes. However, I don't exactly believe that NWC universe is exactly the picture I had in mind so we could just as well drop it at that, as I really don't want to discuss what NWC universe is and what it isn't.
Still, from this I'd assume it would be all the more likely to satisfy older players, if you believe that it's really not that different. Maybe I could try and come up with details for said theoritical universe, in order to practice world-building...? I'll see whether I actually feel up to it.

Ashan doesn't have an inspiring storyline, but neither do really any of the older Heroes games either, other than feeling more mature. So and so fights, needs to retrieve X artifact, kill X bad guy, get stronger, blah blah blah. It was pretty simple, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think what you're really looking for is atmosphere, because after Heroes IV, HoMM lost its novelty and became an amalgamation of other popular franchises. Undead blends with spider thingies. Dark elves with under-dressed females are introduced. Sylvan elves start dual wielding swords. There are some other examples. This isn't really just an issue with Ubisoft. Much of the medieval-esque fantasy world in video games and books has become assembly line bastardizations of each other. Then again, the human landscape isn't exactly the country club. Their primary audience are under-achieving pre-teen, teenage & young adult males. Games with lots of similarities between each other provide familiarity, and they sell. In recent history, the Witcher series puts up a good effort for having its own "brand" of fantasy. Most aren't so memorable.
I think this is a lost cause at this point because Ubi seems dead-set on maintaining its lore. It would be too disruptive to go back to Axeoth, let alone completely re-invent canon and pretend the HoMM 3 world didn't get ICBM'd because Armageddon's Blade and the Sword of Black & Decker Refrigerators touched each other. Some dimensional portals leading to Axeoth (and potentially other worlds) would do a lot to throw some fun into the series.
