Didn't took long for it to pop over the pond eh?
essentially some sort of "game" which includes psychological manipulations and I guess blacmailing as well.

It basically targets weak minded and easily influenced people(kids in their early teens).

I was just reading about that myself. A dangerous game, surely. People contact certain entities through the ether, and these entities happen to be skilled hackers that get all information on players and their families, to use to threaten into playing the game. The game consists of self-destructive tasks that lead up to suicide. Primarily a psychological game, where the player's own fear and manipulation of that fear, drives them to eventually commit suicide.

Youth these days. At least when people play Russian roulette, there's an actual threat involved.

A new reason for the government to spy on your internet because "think of the children". It's a farce, I know teens are stupid and that, but if you want to kill yourself, why wait 50 days first?

They are not suicidal when it starts.

I doubt that is how it starts. It says that its victims complete the game which, as you said, a suicidal person is unlikely to bother with.

It makes no sense, it's just a creepypasta. The game starts by cutting yourself, I doubt kids cut themselves just because they are curious.

You would play this game only if you want to kill yourself, and if you would want to kill yourself you would just kill yourself and don't do some sh1tty tasks and wait 50 days. It's a paradox, a nonsense, it's completely illogical. It's just an urban myth, a creepypasta, a form of media craze and manipulation.

As soon as this appeared in the Romanian press, politicians jumped the train about how they will "protect the children" and make the internet a safe place. They went on media campaigns to boost their popularity. There's no suicidal cult, it's just a scapegoat they blame teen suicide on, instead of facing the real problems which are way harder to tackle, like bullying. This boogieman is something more tangible for the public and media, is something they think they can fight, unlike the human psyche.

If investigations have found these kinds of "games" involved in someones suicide than they are not just a creepypasta. Granted, not really much is known on the topic and they are probably not the same as what is being spun, but they likely do exist.

Also, no, it is not a given that you would want to kill yourself to play a game like this. It is more likely the person in question was depressed and then made suicidal by the game.

@ liz: it starts out by being invited to play the game(or if you hear about it from someone, you can contact said people from the ether, instead). you can either accept or decline(you will be asked if you're sure or not; since there's no reneging). once you say yes, though, the game is on. you are told that you will be contacted within 3 days with a task. when that task is given to you, you have 24 hours to complete it. if not, "you and your family dies". they then show you that they know everything about you and your family(via hacking), giving the participant the idea that these are dangerous people who will actually kill you and your family; since they know your real name, your family members' real names, where everyone lives, where they work, etc.

the kids that kill themselves in this game, are stuck out of fear, and end up dying to supposedly save their own families. which is almost certainly bogus. i say almost certainly, because you don't hear about whole families getting killed in the news(which would be newsworthy, i would think). and there are certainly kids out there who despise their families and cut themselves already, who would be willing to put them in harm's way.

It seems as if the old choking game became too safe for some young folks. If even Snopes couldn't prove the links between this game and all those suicides, there's no hope for anyone to prove said links.

Besides, if they wanted off themselves gradually, they'd have instead taken a *BLEEP*load of Krokodil and waited to see what happened.

No, that's not how it works. It comes from Russia (surprise, surprise ), to be more exact from VKontakte, a Russian facebook ripoff. Those people didn't appear from the ether, there were VK groups, more especially f57 (what a missed opportunity to not call it f1 ) some alleged death-cult. Russian media blames it for 130-something teen suicides even though there's no connection. The dude that ran the facebook VK group was arrested several years ago. Even if there's no clear connection between f57 and the suicides, a suicide cult is outside the law in Russia.

Quote:

The alleged tasks are already available on the internet. They want to seem more edgy and deep that they actually are. To give some examples: cutting yourself, cutting a whale on yourself, watching some edgy videos that are actually internet memes, wake up at 4:20 in the morning (yes, 4:20, can you still take it seriously?), climbing on the roof, killing yourself.

Quote:
if not, "you and your family dies". they then show you that they know everything about you and your family(via hacking), giving the participant the idea that these are dangerous people who will actually kill you and your family; since they know your real name, your family members' real names, where everyone lives, where they work, etc.

Hahahaha "hackers", Russian "hackers". Dude, no, stop, those people aren't hackers, those people that claim to be "curators" are just losers. The leader of f57 and "father" of the blue whale was actually a 21 year old basement dweller from Russia, the definition of loser, he had no serious job nor skills, LARPing as the priest of a suicide cult was the only way he could feel powerful.

All the information they had was from VKontake, which is like facebook, idiots put all the information about them on there. Reading a russian facebook page and using some basic social engineering doesn't make you a hacker. They prey on kids after all, kids are pretty stupid and naive.

Also, killing someone is a hell of a risk, let alone a whole family, let's put aside the fact that killing someone isn't something everyone can do, more so if they live hundreds of miles away. Those people aren't Illuminati or reptilian overlords or the CIA, they aren't even ISIS. Covering your tracks from authorities and getting rid of a body is very hard, especially considering modern forensics. Who would bother with such a risk? Not even hardcore serial killers won't go through all the hassle to plan an online game, then go kill a kid that lives 200 miles away or so if he doesn't respect the rules of some sh1tty suicide game. Those are 16-22 edgy young boys that claim to be part of something bigger.

Have you never got death threats? I got them both on internet and in real life, even when I was a teenager. Guess how many of them actually mean it? Well since I'm writing this, it's clearly that none. If someone actually wants to kill you, they won't tell you, they will kill you.

The game states clearly that you die by the end, so there's no damn way a kid would get inside this without being suicidal, the first task is to cut yourself, dammit. As I said before, no one is gonna bother with killing a whole family over some stupid game, even if they are psychotic serial killers, the hassle is way too great, you'll be caught in no time.

As I said, this is just some creepypasta, perhaps fueled by some edgy teens/young adults. The mystique that is given by it by the media is too damn high. It reminds me a lot of the organ trafficking craze from '50s Prague (spoiler alert, organ trafficking doesn't involve abducting random people/children from the streets) that still continues today, anything that involves child safety is blown out of proportion.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of copy cats. Kinda like the Terror Clown phenomena that ran rampant across the world a year ago. There was no structure or organisation of Clowns across the world initiating some crazy scheme, they were lone wolves acting on their own accord, riding along a hype that others kept alive as well.

Even if the original chat group has been abolished, it might still be that perverted copy cats perpetuate it under a false guise.

Like I think I tried to write before, this reminds me a lot about the scare of D&D back in the day.
I realized I actually don't know if that many of you are old enough to remember it? But I'd expect those older than 30 to be able to.

Anyway I just remembered I saw a movie that looked similar to this plot, some teenagers are on to this online thing where you get challenges that gets more and more dangerous (at first it is e.g. to strip publicly, later on it's to dodge a train), however in the movie you can always back out, it just means you lose the game until there are only one left who wins. However the hero tries to tell the cops about it and that is when she actually gets attacked and boom hack hack now her family has lost all their money and stuff like that. The movie wasn't my taste, but it reminded me about this.
