The townscreens in HOMM6 are certainly better executed than in any other game of the series...

sorry, man, but I like H3 townscreens way more than the others. They're so crystal clear, and nicely colourized, and easily identifiable

Yeeah no. They look good only if you shut off your brain and even then there are glaring perspective flaws, bad scaling, questionable photoshop quality and so on. Huge goblin dwelling vs tiny, unnoticeable behemoth dwelling, nonsensical placement..

And they still looked much better than expected

There is a reason "Ashan to the Trashcan" is a rather famous saying around here.

Heroes died with number 5. Then the Great Desecrator known as Ubisoft came and animated it's long cold corpse. Using it as nothing more than a money grab, while putting no love, no soul, into it. Heroes is nothing more than a sham now. A rotting corpse of a long dead franchise that continues to be ruined and befouled by the Desecrator Ubisoft.

H5 was still ubi. Ironically, ubi's official reason for not using nival again for H6 was that they wanted more of the same. I did not like nival but they certainly delivered with tote.

H5 has great gameplay but I believe a good chunk of the playerbase was repulsed by all the warcraft crap. Also RIP the lore.

MM and HOMM have to enlarge/renew its audience in order to survive !

Although I would never suggest the new Commander Keen as an example ^^ !

I don't know what you mean by "all the warcraft crap", but for me the biggest issue with the game were the heavy-on-the-eye (colourful) graphics, the 3D graphics, and also the fact that you could barely see some objects on the adventure map. I have missed so many of those arches that give +1 morale (if I remember correctly), that you would not believe it if I told you how many I have missed. Not that they are particularly useful or something, but it's still bothersome from time to time, especially when you miss other objects, too.

The 3D graphics and the heavily saturated colors are my main issues with Heroes 5, otherwise I like the game

Eh, I don't know. I replayed Heroes 5 very recently after having fond memories of it. I did have a lot of fun modding the game, but that was only because of the glaring problems the game has...

More often than not I find myself in a very boring situation because interesting spells/skills just don't come up or way too late in the game. At some point, trying to level up your hero doesn't make sense anymore and the alternative upgrades have one superior choice for the most part.

And the AI is just aweful, especially when it overwhelms you with its cheating. And the skill wheel is too opinionated for my taste, having its own ideas what an optimal (or just fun) build should look like.

But Heroes 5 has sim turns, so... yay?

It has an incredibly active player base. HoMM3 is still the most popular game out of the series. A 20 year old game. With a very active modding community.

HoMM does not need to renew it's audience or enlarge it. Ubisoft needs to stop putting out crappy games, that are thinly veiled cash grabs. The HoMM player base is one of the harshest and most critical player bases out there. For good reason! You can literally watch the decline of the series through the games.

HoMM1, 2 & 3, the holy trio of the franchise. Untouchable. The gods of this franchise. HoMM4, great but not quite reaching the heights of the previous three, a demigod if you will. HoMM5, okay, a lot of bugs and problems, average Jo. HoMM6, quite bad, no depth, balance issues, bugs, cheating AI, ugly town screens, a street rat. HoMM7, actual garbage, you take that snow and put it in a trashcan light said trashcan on fire, take the ashen remains drive a tank over it and then shoot it with the damn tank and then drop a nuke on both the remains and the tank. To eradicate the game and to put the poor tank out of commission because it had to come into contact with that poor excuse of a game

If Ubisoft put as much heart and soul into Heroes as 3DO did, or as much care into it as they do their big franchises, they would have an incredibly loyal fanbase. But no, all they care about is money and continue to pump out garbage games for a quick sale and then ding dong ditch. FFS HoMM7 doesn't even have Inferno for a town! One of the oldest towns, one of the originals, a classic!

Ugh.

Well, that's pretty strange discussions out there. In Russian-speaking community we have pretty strong fan base of HoMM5. Our streamers often demonstrate various tactics with different unit upgrades. Things, like "Weeping Deirdre" with banshees, ghost dragons and rot zombies became classic. But yep - people usualy "fix" skillwheel and factions for lategame with mods.
I may say something obscene, but what's the difference where the events of the game take place? The main thing is that the game itself and its script were good. Eventually, all the HOMM worlds are somewhat alike. Demons aka biological weapon, necromancers aka neutral evil.
(More blasphemy!) If we are talking about HoMM games, i can even say, that Sandro from HoMM 6 is not less, if not more interesting character, than in HoMM 3.
Don't get me wrong - the first games are still good, but each series has its own advantages and disadvantages (some just have too many). Sooo... i think, we should not concentrate only on the past. At least, no one will forbid you to play first HoMMs, but series needs to evolve. Because things that cannot reproduce and evolve, cannot be considered alive.

Oddball is wrong overall !

And yes Sandro with HOMM 6 have finally become interesting/charimatic, I would even say he finally became the good guy/anti-hero, the only one speaking the truth about the dragon gods !
I would have liked to help him getting done with the Ashan world/universe and building a new world (or simply ressurecting Enroth) !

Sandro is great because he's catering to our desire to see Ashan go down in a cataclysm ^^ And H5 was hardly an average affair.

And sadly we won't even have the chance to see it happening, to see Sandro succeed, would have been an occasion to end the ashan universe in a bang (more in a MM game than in a HOMM game)...
When I think that in Heroes Online Sandro was close to succeed and we had no choice but to fight him...

Heroes 3 continues to evolve. We now have 2 new whole factions that are equal in quality to what 3DO designed. Do the new games have some good points? Sure. Very few, but they are still there. My point is that Ubi does not put any effort into the Heroes games. Heroes 5 is when they stopped caring because in their eyes Heroes is a dead franchise, ultimately culminating in Heroes 7.

If they released the Heroes 3 Complete Edition HD on Steam that would be a huge success. But they only released Restoration of Erathia I think, so a)Conflux is missing from the roster, as well as new artifacts and other things brought in the other expansions and b)no RMG (Random Map Generator) which was and still is a pretty big thing.
