Are you able to imagine colors?
Hello. I'm currently listening to a lecture about Kant's aesthetics. Are you able to imagine colors? I'm not talking about inventing new colors, just having your thoughts "colored" in a certain color.
For an example, are you able to imagine the flag of Japan as you see it, or do you imagine it as a synthesis of its features just as pure information. Sorry I can't word it any better, it's hard enough just thinking about it.

I equate colors with certain emotions, or states of being. For instance, hatred being black, and rage being red.

I see colors in music, I associate tones with colors. These colors are impossible to describe, ie I can say blue but it's a very complex blue.

I have no trouble picturing colours. I thought this was more or less a given but then I read that some people cannot picture faces and instead remember their characteristics without visualizing them. Strange stuff.

Same and yes, that's what he means.
A more common form of synesthesia is a color-letter or color-digit association. The funny thing is that for people with such an association, it's often that the letter "a" and the digit "4" are colored red.

Reminds me of that buddy in high school... He was always telling me about this or that girl he found stunning, yet could never describe them to me. I asked him, how was she looking? Tall? Small? Brunette? Blonde? Etc, he would always reply "I don't know".
@Blizz and Maurice
Heh never heard of it, but yeah looks like it. I didn't know some saw colors for letters and digits, I don't see colors for that.

Keep in mind that synesthesia is not some super power where you get to see actual connections other people can’t. It is some switch of one’s senses as a result of some neurological anomaly. It is not a harmful anomaly, on the contrary, I think it can trigger creativity in wonderful ways. But some people treat it like having a sixth sense, which is not the case. Had it been, there would be a pretty common ground in what synesthesic people experience, like dogs have super smell ability and when you give them a shirt, all of them track down the same fugitive. Synesthesics are not like that, some associate nine with yellow, some with blue, some with red, etc.. Also, it is not just things reminding you of other things, there is a physical aspect to real synesthesia beyond typical free association such as black reminding a lot of people of death, depression etc. because it is “darkness.”

I don't really pride myself in visualizing thoughts, it's something quite strange, I can imagine something, but only for a split second, I just cannot focus on an image for long. I can literally see faces if I want to, but only for a split second, then they just fade away.
On the plus side, I can do this without closing my eyes, so if I want to imagine a nightmarish scenario of demonic faces plastered on the walls I can do that, not sure why anybody would want to try it, but I can do that.
I can visualize colours, I can imagine red proper, then it turns to brown; I can imagine blue as blue, then it turns to brown; I can imagine yellow as yellow, then it turns to brown.
That may speak too much about my view on life.
Now excuse me while I fight off this mindflayer that just appeared on my door.

In fact, there's some evidence that the best artists and musicians have a stronger developed form of synesthesia than "common people". Through their combination of the various senses, they're much better able to create (logical) order and patterns in what they produce. People who see colors with numbers are usually much more adept at remembering them or organising them.
For me, while I do have a color association with letters and digits, it's not like I actually see the color itself. It's more that when I see the letter "a", the part of my brain that regulates my color perception gives off the signal "red", even though I can clearly see the letter itself is black (as in this forum message, anyway), I don't actually see the letter "a" in red. Likewise, my "e" is yellowish, while my "u" is orange. My color association is quite strong with vowels, but not nearly as strong as with consonants. With digits, it's about as strong as with vowels.
However, it does give words a certain color balance. For instance, take the word "certain". It starts off yellowish due to the "e" at the beginning, then flows to red due to the "a", followed by a sharp turn to white, due to the "i" that immediately follows the "a".
