Yeah, I've heard it many times that if Messi and Cristiano had played against the defenders of the past they would get stomped.

I've seen the highlights of the 1994 Champions League final, Milan vs Barcelona 4-0. Feels unreal. And I've heard that before the game the Barcelona side was pretty confident that they would score goals because Milan would defend. Lol.

Maldini and Nesta for Milan were probably the best duo of defenders that I got to see... I didn't get to see much of the 90's live because I was too small.

nah, man! I don't watch football anymore. We can talk about it if you want but I am really out-dated on the subject as I have stopped following football after the L'pool - Spurs final in UCL. I'm focusing all of my attention and energy on 3 things, and 3 things only:

1. to be alive and healthy
2. to make money
3. to make the best mythological TBS game EVER.

These are the only things that I'm focusing my time and energy on, so probably even a non-football fan will be more up-to-date about football than me

As for Antic, I don't know what to say. 71 is not too advanced of an age to die, especially for a stubborn (in the positive sense of the word "stubborn") serbian like him. I was really surprised to hear that he's gone cause I remember him from when he's managed the Serbian team in the 2010 WC... or was it 2014?? Anyway... he had looked pretty sound back then

you've been too young, not too small

And yeah, I haven't lived to watch Baresi, either. I have only watched a few of his games when I've been 10 years old or younger, but at that time I have been too young to be impressed by a defender, or to remember anything.

Now, to be honest,I did watch Messi against Nesta a few times in the Champions League when this competition used to matter, and I will be honest and admit that both these players have had their ups and downs against each other. However, with Maldini on the pitch things would bave been different. I mean, even Ronaldinho who, truth being told, is more creative than Messi, has never been able to break down Italian defenses when he had played for Barca and later on for Milan, let alone Messi who, as natural and unpredictable as his changes of pace and turnarounds are, he had still been blocked successfully by the Italian defenders when these guys have been motivated enough to block him

oh, don't get me wrong: I would LOVE (like in, genuinely love) to be able to watch and discuss football again. After all, we, Romanians, even though we suck at football nowadays, do have this sport deeply ingrained into our being, and discussing it comes as natural as eating is for most people

But... given the corruption of the last decade, and lately the pandemic, as well, football has stopped mattering in the collective mental of the mankind (if you know what that is).

AC Milan has always been my favorite club in the 90s-2010s decades when I have been young enough and interested enough in football to care about it... I have liked AC Milan even than my own team (and we, Romanians, know how loved - even if not openly admitted - and well respected U Craiova has been before corruption had ruined our domestic league)... so, even though I was a U Craiova fan I have still liked AC Milan more than my local team in the 90s and all the way through late 2000s. I have liked their name, their emblem (or whatever their logo is called), and have also liked their legendary players: Pirlo, Kaka, Maldini, Baresi, Savicevic, van Basten, Rui Costa, Guulit, Rijkaard, Shevchenko, Cafu, Seedorf, Inzaghi, and all other legends that have made AC Milan great. Hell, I have even liked the mobster Berlusconi because he's had a good eye for football. Even though in theory I might be wrong, my gut instinct tells me that many of Milan's legendary signups under Silvio's patronage have been his doing.

Anyway, I apologize if this rant bothered you, but you've opened up an old wound that I thought to be closed, and I had to let it out

The pandemic stopping football was easily the worst thing about it for me.

And you're sadly right about the whole corruption thing, but football will always matter to me. Yes, even Romanian football.

You don't need to apologize, I love to read your opinion on football topics.

Milan has truly had many great players and yes, love or hate Berlusconi, he helped make that possible.

Nowadays only Juventus seem to matter in the title race and I think we both know their reputation for the manner that they win some matches and even titles (calciopoli). Not saying that they didn't have or had very good players too but I dislike this team.

The former owner of my favorite team from Romania was compared to Berlusconi by the fans and the media too. Bonus points if you already figured out the team and owner.

Maan, I'm really not knowledgeable enough about Romanian football to know the answer, but sure, I'll give it a try! Becali?

Regarding Juve... I have heard even AC Torino fans saying that their favorite Italian team is Juventus (normally their death rivals), so yeah... I'm not surprised that Juve has most titles in Serie A and that many of their dubious titles / games are overlooked. In Italy even the fans of rival teams like Milan or AC Torino, and even the referees like Juve without even being paid to help them.

Personally, I like Juve, too... well, I don't like them anymore because I don't care about football anymore because it has lost its spark and emotion from the 90s - early 2000s, but were I ever to return back to watching football and rooting for non-local clubs Juve would be at the top of my list, among the 3 that have always been my favorites throughout the decades: Milan, Bayern, and Juve... in THIS order

I see you don't like English and Spanish teams that much, eh?

I never got the fascination some Romanians have for Bayern. A team that dominates the league like that just makes it more boring to me.

NOOOOOO! I wanted to say Copos at first but then I changed to Becali in the last second. NOOOOOOOOO! (

I do like English teams. Man. Utd, Chelsea, and lately Liverpool are always enjoyable clubs to watch. Actually, to be fully honest, over the last decade - and with the downfall of my beloved AC Milan - I have constantly rooted for Chelsea and Man Utd in Champions League, and sometimes even when they have played against Bayern, so I do like them. But, generally speaking, I am fond of Bayern more than the English teams. And the explanation for that is simple. In the 90s until mid 2000s my father - as a constructions engineer - has had several German-Romanian construction projects and he's lived in Germany most of the time during that period. So, naturally, I have visited him quite a few times, and during one of those visits (in 1993 if I remember correctly, but also might be 1991 I don't remember exactly) he had taken me to a Bayern Munchen - Dynamo Dresden that has ended 5-0 for Bayern. Since then I have become a fan of this club, especially since I have visited Munchen a few times and since Bayern is Germany's most popular football club. You simply can not root for Bayern if you're German, it's basically the same thing as Juve in Italy or Steaua in Romania... it's their biggest and most favorite club that even fans of rival teams secretly like... and I have become a fan, as well

That explains it about Bayern.

I never supported steaua and I don't think anyone likes them secretly. Well, maybe I would have liked them if I was alive and old enough in 1986, but otherwise never.

My favorite English team is Arsenal, who are not doing so well at the moment, so more reason for me to feel nostalgic about the 00's team with Bergkamp, Henry and company.

So why don't you like Spanish teams?

I hated the tiki-taka style of their national team and Barcelona, but other than that it was hard not to like the Real Madrid galaticos side with Raul, Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos... and I'm pretty sure they had greats before them too, just that I was not old enough.

Even our Romanian Gica Popescu was once captain of the Barcelona side.

Steaua was the best example I could give for Romania. I know people from different zones of the country that root for Steaua when their local teams are nowhere to be seen, or simply don't exist. To me, this is a good indication that Steaua is the most popular Romanian team among Romanian fans

Sorry to hear that you root for the gunners. Since Henry they have been 5hit and it's mostly Wenger's fault who I never considered to be a great coach. He might be a good manager (like in, taking care of the club's finances) and might also be a good motivator (a quality that I believe every good manager/coach should possess), but he lacks in the tactics compartment, and tactics have become even more important in the last 2 decades than it's been in the age of romantic football (70s - 90s) when football had belonged to the cruyffs, platinis, and maradonas of football (ie. the really technical, spectacular players who could dribble the entire enemy team and still score themselves). Nowadays, well over the last decade anyway, if you're not a good tactician you simply can not put the title on your sponsor's table, even if you had Messi and Ronaldinho in the same team.

Wenger may have had his glory years in the 80s-90s when football had lived its final "romantic era" years, but once it had started get technical and technological... kaput Wenger and Arsenal. I do like Arsenal, too, though... from time to time only. They're a bit doofus and enjoyable in their nostalgic stupidity, and I can at least not hate such clubs if not straightup like them

Spanish? I don't know, but I just don't like Spanish people in general. And the fact that kill bulls in arenas for entertainment anger me and makes me dislike them even more. Even if - before I die (if that ever happens) - they get rid of this bad habit I will still not like them. I can't logically explain why I don't like Spaniards cause it's not logical, it's more like an instinctual thing and instincts can't be always explained. I don't care that Giga Popescu has been the captain of Barca, and I couldn't care less even if God himself declared Spain the best country in the world. I have my whims, and not liking Spanish football clubs is one of those whims.

Sure, when Adrian Ilie had played for Valencia I have rooted for Valencia in the late 90s - early 2000s, and when Craioveanu had played for Villareal I have also rooted for the Yellow Submarine, as well. But once they have left the clubs those clubs have meant nothing to me anymore. The interesting part in all these, however, is that when I had first gotten into football Real Madrid has been my favorite football club as a young kid. Then, in early 2000s when Perez had started the madness by bringing Ronaldo (the real Ronaldo, I mean), Zidane, Figo, and Beckham in to the club I have literally switched sides because one of my the things that I regard to be very valuable in life is balance, and with those signups Perez has destroyed the apparent balance because - in theory - all those players playing together should have destroyed everything in La Liga and European competitions. Well, thank God this has never happened because of 3 particular European clubs that have thought "oh, so Perez is creating the best team in the world? Ok, no problem. Let him create the best team in the world, and we will show him we are". Those 3 clubs - while they may, or may not have said these words - have acted accordingly, and have beaten the crap out of RM whenever they have met. Those 3 clubs are... you've guessed it... Milan, Bayern, and Juve.

I will never forget the moment when I was watching live the draws for the knock-out games in UCL on Eurosport and when Real Madrid or Barca (I don't remember which one of these clubs) have been drawn first the cameras had switched from the live pulling of RM / Barca's name from the urn on the officials in the stands that RM / Barca have sent to represent them in the live draw, and then... the 2nd team extracted from the urn (which would have had to play against RM / Barca) had been AC Milan, at which point the cameras have switched again over to the Spanish officials just in time to catch them facepalming themselves. I mean, being Real Madrid in the 2000s, with Raul, Hierro, Ronaldo, Figo, Beckham and Zidane and facepalming yourself when you see that you've been drawn against AC Milan.... for me this speaks volumes about the boogyman that AC Milan have been among all European clubs. And for good reason, them and Juve would beat the crap out of any Spanish team in those years (just don't remind me of the Milan - Deportivo incident cause it still hurts).

So anyway, after Perez had ruined the football in early 2000s by signing up all those legends I have switched over from rooting for RM to rooting for AC Milan, especially since at that time I was a passionate hater of Barca, a double-hater actually considering that I usually dislike Spaniards and that I was a RM fan, too. So, being the Barca hater that I've been and seeing how a young, unknown player at that time had destroyed Barca 4-0 at Nou Camp in UCL with him scoring all 4 goals... and seeing how this young, unknown fella had shortly moved to AC Milan and considering that I instinctively liked that young, unknown fella... I have obviously and instantly become an AC Milan fan and been one ever since... until 2010-2011 when the legends that I have grown up with and which have brought me so many joys have retired one by one.

And to end my long rant, I will return the "favor" and ask you who is that "young, unknown fella" that has single-handedly defeated Barca 4-0 at Nou Camp and had shortly after moved on to AC Milan to become one of greatest Milan legends?

I have to agree about Wenger. I liked the man at Arsenal and appreciate what he's done but he was unable to move on to modern football tactics which really hurt the team in the second half of his reign. Even if he did manange to qualify for the Champions League each year they would get humiliated by teams like Bayern. It hurts, but that's the truth.

I kind of agree with you on Perez and balance, but the thing for me is that as a youngster it was hard not to fall in love with those players that he brought. But now I'm not really feeling any love for RM similarly to how you felt after the legends of Milan ended their careers.

And I know that many people in Romania love steaua in a similar way to how Juve and Bayern are in their countries, just that I don't.

As for your question, that player has to be Shevchenko. I never understood why he later decided to leave Milan for Chelsea just like that. Well, okay, I do understand that they gave him a lot of money, but he was a legend for Milan...

spot on!

I like this little guy like you can't imagine. I mean, I like him so much that had I been a Romanian coach of a club that afforded both Hagi and Sheva I would build my team starting with Shevchenko. THAT much I like him

Ok, to be fair I would start with both as Hagi is more of a playmaker than a striker, but I have never ever liked a striker as much as I have liked Shevchenko. For me he's the best striker in the world, and as Chivu had once said in an interview "Shevchenko is the hardest striker he has had to defend against", and let's not forget that Chivu has played against some of the best strikers in the world in those years. Chivu has said - more or less, my words may not be 100% his exact words, but the idea is the same - that one second you would hold on tight onto Shevchenko, then turn your head to the right/left to figure out how the game progresses around you and when you turn your head back onto the thing you were supposed to be hugging (Shevchenko) the Ukrainian would already be 100 meters away from you, scoring a goal. THAT hard to mark Sheva had been, and all of the great defenders from Serie A in the early 2000s can attest to this fact. That guy had been amazingly tough to mark, and when he's had the slightest chance to score (or even shoot) he'd take it and most of the time he'd score, as well. Frightening efficiency, positioning and vision of the game.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the reason he had left Milan for Chelsea - according to rumors - are 2 actually: 1) his wife had wanted to live in London... 2) Abramovic's son, a huge fan of Shevchenko, had demanded of his father to bring Sheva to the club so he can befriend him and watch him live.

Now, I'll admit that I don't know how much - if any - of these rumors are true, but it's what I've heard at that time since I have obviously been very interested in the subject and have done a bit of research. So take these rumors with a grain of salt (whatever this expression means LOL)

Quote:
just that I don't
oh, don't worry, I don't like Steaua either. Sure, when they used to play in UCL and get points for Romania I would root for them as much as I'd root for Rapid or Dinamo (in case you didn't know Dinamo used to be U Craiova's sworn enemy... I think they still are our biggest enemy among U Craiova's die-hard fans).

So anyway, the point is that I don't like Steaua, either (well, I pretty much don't like the Romanian circus called football anymore), so I can understand you disliking them even more as a Rapid fan

Quote:
each year they would get humiliated by teams like Bayern
man, no offense but when Bayern (one of the best European football clubs in general, and of the last decade in particular) beats the crap out of you you can't consider it humiliation. Humiliation is when Swansea beats you... or when you need to draw in the last matchday of the season at home against Burnley in order to secure the last UCL spot but you lose 0-1.... or when you need to at least tie Spurs - your sworn enemy - at Wembley so they don't play next season in UCL but you still lose the game... these are humiliations for a team like Arsenal, not getting raped by Bayern.

I mean, I understand that you're an Arsenal fan, and as a fan every 2-3 goals difference defeat is painful, but then again, you need to think of what Arsenal have accomplished in Europe (nothing) and what Bayern have, and then you will understand why losing by a big margin to Bayern is not a humiliation.

I know that about Dinamo and Craiova. I have some liking for Craiova too since I've got some family in the region. And I appreciate that the fans stuck with the team even if they have had bad times compared to the 80's glory.

You're right, Shevchenko was great and played against top defenders and was able to best them. This reminds me how I wanted Chelsea to win the final of the Champions League against Man. United in 2008 just because Shevchenko was there. But the Chelsea coach left him on the bench and they lost on penalties. Serves him right.

Those rumors about Sheva leaving for Chelsea might be true. But whichever his reason was, we can't change anything now.

Okay, fair point about Bayern being the bigger team than Arsenal, but wouldn't you consider a 10-2 aggregate loss a humiliation? And if not, what would you call it?

As for U Craiova... yeah, we are fanatics about football... well, the older generations anyway because the new (de)generations of kids that stay glued to their smartphone's screens all day long and ignore you completely if you don't mention their sacred passwords (facebook, app, youtube) couldn't care less about anything that had filled my youth years with joy (AC Milan - and football in general, movies, and the music of the 80s)

Yep, Liverpool got the biggest whooping since like 70 years. While having most of the squad they had when winning Champions League and League Championship :/

And Man U, which is still s*it since Ferguson left, also got their behinds kicked...

Some people say the corona situation has something to do with it. Well you cannot ignore the effects of how it might've impacted the pre-season preparation.

Meanwhile Juventus waits for Napoli to arrive on the pitch, while the latter does not arrive because apparently people in Italy are not sure about the regulations anymore....
