So appearently HC has a character limit for passwords(?), either that or I forgot to input the last character in my password twice when I changed it last time.
Either way, it now works!

SO, D&D 5th Edition you say? The game I have dedicated my Friday nights to for the last 5-6 years, you say?
Well hot damn, I am up for this snow!

@Geny We will use roll20 because I LIKE MAKING MAPS YESYES. Iím only having GitP for stat rolls so that they are both easier to track and so that people donít lose their rolls in the shuffle.

@Count if you donít want to register on Giant in the Playground, I could just roll stats for you. Unfortunately, Heroes Community just doesnít have dice rolling or character sheet services, which means we have to use outside services.

@B-E-T-A WAIT YOU STILL EXIST?!

Well, if we're using roll20 anyway, I would suggest making the characters there instead of Mythweavers. It helps keep things in one place and makes rolls easier once the sheet is properly set up.

I'm gonna need some major hand holding so please be patient with me. I'm really interested in D&D.

Also, I am assuming that B-E-T-A is some HC legend?

B-E-T-A is part of the old Glade Brigade.

And don't worry, I'll help out with the character building. The game itself is possibly the simplest it has ever been, so the learning curve isn't high at all.

Legend? Nah, never considered myself a legend. I'm just some old RPer who dropped out of here when I got into uni. Then I tried doing a comeback a few months ago. Didn't work out because of the aforementioned password issues.

BUT NOW I AM HERE!

Also, if you need help, feel free to ask. I've been DMing this game system on a weekly basis for the last few years, so I feel like I know it pretty well.

@Geny I honestly didn't know that Roll20 had a character sheet section. If you know where it is and where to do all of that, then I'll leave that to you! I've updated the post to lead to the Roll20 game instead of Mythweavers now.

@B-E-T-A I've been DMing the system since the player handbook was the only book, and Rise of Tiamat was the only module. I'm good on the system  mechanics.

We moved our Homebrew game over to 5th Edition back when it came out as well. Been using r20 and 5th edition since.
Though the statement was mostly for the newbie, I suppose I'll let it stand as a blanket statement for all!

So I'm not going create my character just yet, I have some running around to do today I just have one question.

Can someone just give me a quick run down of the magic users in this? Like what's the difference between a Sorcerer and a Wizard and stuff like that. And Cleric as well.

The magic system has always been really confusing in D&D.

P.S. No druids?

@Gnomes
I like it that you've edited everything about where to make the sheets, except the name of the site.

Also, I think that you, as the DM need to create some empty sheet shells for us to fill in. Or give me DM powers, I suppose.

@Oddie
Hold your horses. I'm still waiting for Gnomes to finish things up and let us know what restrictions are there on Race/Class(and class specialization)/background. After that, all will be explained.

There are still going to be druids, don't worry. Every race can be any class, the Favored Classes are just the classes that each race is a bit more inclined to be, and which gives a small bonus for choosing it. The Nomadic Sharen subrace are the ones who get druid, and since they are the last race alphabetically... I kinda haven't gotten to them yet.

Magic in D&D 5e

Most of the classes in this game can do magic of some kind. There are some slight difference between them, but I'll try to give you a quick rundwon

First of, there are several ways to differentiate between the casters. The first split I'll cover is what I like to call the difference between Spontaneous Casters, and Prepared-spells Casters (names not official).
A Spontaneous Caster is a caster who has a list of spells that are available to them. They can cast any spell that is on their list at any time, provided they have the prerequisite resources.
The Spontaneous Casters are:
-Bard
-Ranger
-Sorcerer
-Warlock
-Eldritch Knight Fighters
-Arcane Trickster Rogues
A Prepared-Spells Caster is a caster who has a list of spells available to them, but who must choose a select number of spells from that list to prepare each day. As such, they may only cast spells that is from that list.
The Prepared-Spell Casters are:
-Cleric
-Druid
-Paladin
-Wizard

The second mechanical difference that there are between the classes is that some classes are Full-Casters, Some are Half-Casters, and some none-caster classes can get casting subclasses.
The difference her is progression in caster levels.
The Full Casters progress Caster Levels in a 1:1 ratio, meaning one level of this class counts as one full Caster Level. The full Casters are:
-Bard
-Cleric
-Druid
-Sorcerer
-Wizard
The Half Casters progress in Caster Levels in a 2:1 ratio, meaning you need two levels of this class to count as one full caster level. The Half-Casters are:
-Paladin
-Ranger
Finally, both the Fighter and Rogue classes can get a spellcasting Subclass. These subclasses progress at a 3:1 ratio. Meaning 3 Fighter or Rogue levels counts as one Caster Level if you have these subclasses.

You may have noticed that I didn't mention the Warlock anywhere. Well, that is because the Warlock technically doesn't do spellcasting, they do Pact Magic. As such they don't count towards Caster Levels but use their own progression.

The last mechancial difference between the casters is what stat they use for spellcasting. All classes use either Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma for their spellcasting, but each class only use one stat.
Wisdom: Cleric, Druid, Ranger
Intelligence: Wizard, Eldritch Knight Fighter, Arcane Trickster Rogue
Charisma: Bard, Paladin, Sorcerer, Warlock

I think that does it for mechanical difference, now onto fluff!

Bard: So you like music? Well do ya!? Well, what if I told you that MUSIC IS MAGIC?! This is the truth, at least if you are a Bard. Bards have this strange ability to cast spells by playing musical tunes. As a Bard you have to carefully select your spells from the Bard Spell list as you are leveling them, and like most Spontaneous casters you don't get that many to have "on-hand".
Bards are mainly focused on support spells, and don't have the best damage output. That said, they get this nifty ability to steal spells from other classes' spell lists, and that is cool.

Cleric: Clerics can be summed up as the Agent of the Gods. They get their powers from praying to their deity of choice everyday. Very flexible as they have a rather large spell list they get to choose from, and they get to change their prepared spells everyday.

Druid: Spellcasting wise they are very similar to Clerics. They both have access to a large list of spells and get to change their spells everyday. The main difference is that Druids don't get their power from the Gods, but get it from communing with Nature itself. The spell lists of Druids and Clerics reflect this. Druids also have the ability to turn into cool animals.

Paladin: What fuels a Paladin's power is different from setting to setting. In the "main" setting of Forgotten Realms, The Paladins are fueled by their deity of choice, just like Clerics. The main difference between the two is that Paladins focus more on being badass front-line fighters than spellcasters, so the deity only fuels them half as much as they do a Cleric. In other settings a Paladin is simply fueled by RIGHTEOUS FURY. They swear an Oath to follow and BOOM, magic!
Paladins get this nifty thing called "Smite Spells", which are spells that combine with melee-weapon attacks in order to create that nice extra "UMPH!" to your magic warrior ways.

Ranger: Rangers are to druids what Paladins are to Clerics. Nature wandering people who also got magic. For reasons. Honestly you are fine as long as you picked Hunter's Mark. Everything else is situational at best.

Sorcerer: Puberty can be quite awkward. Even more so if you are a sorcerer. On top of having to deal with all that other stuff (voice-cracking, periods, face-blemishes, and so on) you also have to deal with the fact that you magic now!
So the deal with Sorcerers is that either you got put through a freak accident that gave you magical powers. Or one of your ancestors did the nasty with some kind of magical creature, and your bloodline just radiates with magical powers as a result.
Either way, you are now essentially a Wizard, but without the need for studying magic. You also get the ability to break the rules of magic to a certain extent, as you get access to Meta-Magic.

Warlock So, you want magic, but you don't want to do that stupid studying thing, and you are not lucky enough to be born with power? Well, you've come to the right place. Just sign the dotted line right here, and give me an ounce of your blood. Don't worry, just a security measure. And BOOM! You can cast magic now!
So if the above was not clear enough, Warlocks get their magic through a binding contract with another, more powerful magical entity. It could be an Archdevil, or an Archdemon. Could be a mystical fey, or it could be Cthulhu. Yeah, I don't really get why Cthulhu cares about you either, but hey, free stuff!
The Warlock is definitely the most unique spellcaster. They have fewer spell slots than any other class, only having 1 to start and capping out at 5 (I believe). Their spells are always cast at maximum power, since your spell slots all upgrade over time. And they get their spell slots back after every short rest(1 hour rests) rather than long rest(8 hour rests). They also get an added bonus in something called Eldritch Invocations, which can also do magical things.

Wizard: Ahh yes, the Wizard. The traditional spellcaster with argueably the most potential. They get the largest spell list in the game, but unlike Clerics, Druids, and Paladins they don't have access to it at all times. Instead, Wizards get a spellbook which they have to slowely fill with the spells they learn. Everyday after a long rest, a Wizard needs to mull over their spellbook and pick out a few spells to have "on hand". They are simple enough to have a grasp on early on, as you will always know exactly what all your spells are, instead of being overwhelmed by choices. And as the game progress, you should (hopefully) be filling that book up with more and more power.

Eldritch Knights & Arcane Tricksters: Fighters & Rogues who looked into a Wizard's spellbook, but was only allowed to look at 2 schools of magic.

Thanks B-E-T-A!

That's a lot of information. I'll mull over it for now.

I just know that I want a be a magic caster, now the only question is, which one?

Edit: Aren't there evil classes as well? Like necromancer and stuff like that? Or are those classes restricted to NPC's?
