A site for triggers?

would anyone be interested in trigger tutorials? i'm making a site that explains the ins and outs of most of the triggers in homm4 and how to use them.

I would like such a site for sure. I got trouble with 'giving' the human player neutral armies. If I set the 'on encounter' thing to change colour, they join my team but after that I have to fight against them. Then I control both sides in battle... :s

I posted a workaround to this problem a few days ago.  Check out my message dated April 24, 2002 11:07 AM in this thread: http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=4&TID=4441.

Basically, the idea is to use placed events and triggerable events to create the illusion of a wandering troop being owned by you.

With these triggers I suppose your meaning scripting system, right? Well, at www.heroes4.org you can download/submit scripts. And I recommend novises download Final Conflict from the same site (three hurrays to Lexa and Smiiff!) and check the events.

I'm working on a map which achieves the following with some scripting sleights of hand:

*  You have a chance to build not one, but BOTH of your Level 2, 3, and 4 town dwellings upon meeting certain conditions.

* Immobile heroes -- heroes that are seemingly "stuck" on the ground and must be "freed" by meeting certain conditions.

* "Polluted" terrain -- it reduces a hero's attack and defense skills at random squares.

* And most amazingly, Hidden portals -- an opposing army can make a surprise appearance right next to your town or structures without using Stealth.

Umm......please do not steal my ideas.

Too late.

The first three are simple things, so I won't charge you!

But the hidden portal thing, heh, heh, heh.  SO neat.  Let's say your creatures are frolicking in front of your town and suddenly, <BAM!>, a god-knows-what is standing right next to them.  Again, no Stealth skill is involved here.  Because a Stealth hero can easily sniff out another Stealth hero.  This one just POPS right up from nowhere!

To show that I wasn't bullsnowting about having both Level 2, 3, and 4 dwellings, here is a screenshot:

In fact, I have SEVEN dwellings, but the screen only has room for six!  The one not showing is Faerie Dragon.  All this can be done simply with the CONSTRUCT BUILDING action in a script.  But beware.  There are some issues.  I had encountered several crashes before finding a particular set of configurations that didn't give me problems.

the reason why i know so much about scripting is cos i used to make similar maps in age of empires 2. the scripting system in homm4 and AOE2 is not that much different that's how i know how to do practically almost anything in homm4. the site will be ready approx 1 week a few tutorials will be added first than more later.

I would suggest a comprehensive, book-length (if need be) reference document or FAQ be written about the map editor because it doesn't come with any, nada, zilch!  A few tips & tricks here and there wouldn't be as helpful as an all-encompassing *reference* source that documents all the map objects, script commands, event handling, etc.  Somebody needs to do this and put 3DO to shame...

Sorry Kevyip, but I've got to try out that double-structure building thing. But don't worry - I don't plan to be using it on any maps.

Seems like custom maps will be GREAT in HoMM4:

Man I want a HoMM4 pride map! Those maps were my favorite for HoMM3...

No problem-o.  But I begin to doubt its usefulness because it crashes the game under some conditions.  If you have more than 6 dwellings (not including Creature Portal in Preserve) in any town, it crashes.  If you have a Fort and more than 5 dwellings in any non-Preserve town, it crashes.  This sucks because the Fort is required for everything.  If you disable the Fort, you basically disable the building of any dwelling in the town, and you have to rely strictly on scripts and events to build dwellings.  This is not a good way to design a map because town construction strategy is part of the heart and soul of HOMM, and shouldn't be turned into a series of event-triggering...

I'm planning on collecting as much of this sort of information on using the editor as I possibly can, at http://heroes.mycomport.com/maphaven/mapmakersguild/articles.html - MapHaven's mapmaker's guild.  So far I only have one person writing anything up for me, though I expect the collection to grow ... darn sure these tutorials are needed!

I'd be keenly interested in any tutorials anyone was willing to have posted.  I can give the original authors immediate edit/delete facility very easily - indeed, that's the way I prefer to have it.  For people with a lot to share, assuming reasonable writing skills, I can even enable them to post their tutorials or articles themselves (much like posting a message here at HC, except that you *always* want to have written it carefully).

DragonSister@heroes.mycomport.com

P.S. Bladex, I can host you or simply link to your site, so long as you give me a URL - the more people find the various tutorials, the better!

And kevyip, I agree about the desirability of decent documentation for the editor.  Again, I can host it, or point to it, as needed; I don't expect to have time to contribute to it myself for the next few months :-/ (busy trying to handle gameplay tips and other people's maps and material from AstralWizard).
