Are you sure it works with the DOS version? I can't seem to get it to work my original DOS version from the compendium CD.

I downloaded H1 extracted his files into the DATA folder. I ran showgrid.bat and I get "Operation Successful" several times and click OK for each. I can see that my Heroes.agg file has been updated to todays date and time. But then when I start the game and enter a battle.. no grid lines.. nothing has changed.

Copied the files over into a Windows XP VM and tried again.. no errors.. but no change in-game.

Hmm I'll install the Windows version of HoMM1 into my XP VM see how that goes instead.

Okay it worked with the Windows version of HoMM1 in a XP VM, I can see grids however it's slow and the CD music doesn't work properly through the VM so I'd still prefer to get it working with the dos copy.

I figured out why it wasn't working with the DOS version. The compendium version of HoMM1 is a sort of combo install as it puts the dos data files in a DDATA folder and the Windows files in the regular DATA folder so I was editing the wrong one and wondering why nothing was changing lol. Ran the bat file in the DDATA folder, started the game and it worked, I could see gridlines. However all the colours were funny and horrible as there must be some type of slight palette difference.. man I just can't win lol.

Beacause its graphic file. You can have both version with grid but you must change installer.3 versions of palette
1.Win
2. Demo dos
3. Gog
For gog is probably dos.
You must change palete bmp only.

The original Windows version of HoMM I has, indeed, problems running on Windows 10 and 11. Though you can run it, even fullscreen, on Windows 7 using old Nvidia graphics drivers. Yet the best (& smoothest) experience you'll get only with the Buka (Russian) version + English localization + TE patch + Verok's GL wrapper.

This was an intentional decision - the grid should not be catchy, it should almost blend into the landscape. If you need contrast, try to change the color of tile borders. I think you have to edit .XTL files, but I can't say for sure now.

Haha nah mate, what I saw was definitely not intentional. Like I said in my previous posts I'd already got it working in the windows version of HoMM1 and I'd see the screenshot in this thread so I know what it's meant to look like. When I finally got it working in the dos version it looked very different to what I saw in the windows version and the screenshots as the entire battlefield had crazy weird bright fluorescent colours. Was definitely a palette issue.

Ahh okay, so the palette supplied in Miners download is the windows one. I didn't bother to download the special GoG palette as I'm not using the GoG version. But yeah the GoG versions is likely just the old Dos version so I'll give that palette a try.

Nope no luck.. replacing the palette file with the gog version and re-runing the showgrid bat causes the same crazy colours.. also tried that special H1 demo palette just for the hell of it and nope.. weird colours again.

When I use the hidegrid bat the gridlines go away again but the weird colours remain. Only restoring my original agg file brings back the normal colours again.

So if all 3 palette files from his site are causing weird colours then is it possible my 1997 compendium CD version of HoMM1 Dos used yet another palette?

Seems so unless you really tried all three options. It's definitely a palette problem. If you were using the Windows version, I would recommend to install old graphics drivers, because new drivers break original colors, but it's not your case. You can also try the GoG version if you haven't already.

But I really recommend to switch to the Buka version, though as far as I know you can't acquire it legally.

Try change not only palette but exe file too. May be little another.
Compedium is simply dos and win. Its normal dos I tested it.

Oh yes I definitely tried all 3 different palette files multiple times with a fresh unmodified heroes.agg just to make sure I hadn't done anything silly.

Don't have the GoG copy but perhaps I'll buy it in the future and try the grids with that as I don't have an alternative exe to try. You're probably right about it possibly being an exe issue though as I was able to do a full icn extraction with the regular H1palette file that comes with miners tools and everything looks fine, normal colours, so I think my agg file is nothing different, plus its dated 1995 2 years before the compendium was put together so they clearly didn't touch it. Whereas I notice that both my windows and dos exe files were modified in 1997 for the compendium release.

Yeah I downloaded a copy of H1TE_EN the other day to try so that's a good idea, I'll go try it now. I'm still rocking Windows 7 lol.

Oh dear... Missing "SMACKW32.DLL" error message when I try to run it. So I hit google and go find it and try again. Missing "audiere.dll" error msg so I go and find that on google and try again.. Now I get "The procedure entry point _AdrOpenSampleSource@4 could not be located in the dynamic libary audiere.ddl"..

ahh man.. I think it's time for me to give up and move on. The universe has decided that this is just not going to happen. No matter what we try 'something' just has to go wrong lol. I don't desperately need the grid but if I do at some point I'll just go play the copy I got working in the XP VM.

I know, but I can't share the Buka version (it would be piracy), so I couldn't include it in the archive.

Surprised no one told me to go try Verok's OpenGL Wrapper for HoMM1. I tried it out on my Windows version of HoMM1 and wow.. I can put on heaps of graphic enhancements like super eagle x2, and also apply both a battle grid and battle movement shade effects along with battle speed increases. Although I'm having some sound effect problems sadly but.. wow this is some impressive work.

I don't know anything of your moral values I just formally cannot give you any links, because I used to buy games. It's fair. Yet, this case is different. You cannot buy the Buka version anymore. So, you are free to download it, again, if you think that it's appropriate. I just try to say that the Buka company had the sources of Heroes 1 (I don't remember exactly when they did their localization), and therefore, it works smoothly on systems starting from NT 5.0, it's a fact. It's your choice if you want search for that build or not. I have several copies of it, and I can compare. The Buka version is the best at the moment if we speak about user experience. I, personally, with the help of Alukret, translated it back to English (not from Russian, of course, we returned all the original texts). So, basically, it gives you the original experience. Morever, I'm a competitive player, who won several tournaments and know almost everything about how this game works. My TE patch eliminates probably all bugs you may encounter playing the original version. So, it's up to you if you are ready to download it.

I'm having a blast with the "Masquerade Mod"! Thank you, developers - the mode is amazing and maybe my favorite mode ever made. But there is one little issue for me - I hate the "savage" unit (the centaur with the spear) - it looks really ugly for me and I try to replace him and return the classic goblin from the original game.

Do you have any idea how am I able to do that?
there is a "DATAutilsICNh1mod" folder that comes with the mode, but removing files from there don't change anything for me.

You know only fourth version. We have more:

PS. if you font like new creature simply open both old and new graphic using Grayface tool find eg. orc and replace new by old.
But you have orc in vanilla game. I dont see sense to play old if we have new one!

Great job! Everything is really in tuned with the main game. I play 0.4, because you have 4 flyers as a level 6 unit.
I downloaded grayface tool from this site, but when I try to unpack it, I got this message and I can't find the folder where the .inc files are located. If I install the old game and replace the "savage" .std/.wip/.wlk files with the one from the original goblin, will that work, because deleting them don't do anything and I'm assuming that those files are not used in the game and that the "h1mod" folder is used as a backup.

No its not mine but i'm interesting h1 modding for years.
Unpacking is easy!
Make folder eg hmm1modding
Copy agg file only.
Run grayface tool. You need only write unpack heroes.agg.
Do you know how command lines work? And how to make bat file?!
It make new folder "heroes" with all separate files. Replace file you want eg. goblin.icn and sencond with animation data! In graface tool you have all. For agg for grafic and for til!
Its little to learn. But if you have skill you can made more changes in this mod! Maybe new units?!
Its very easy. Look at sprites here:
h1 sprites
Unit is only 17 pictures. And tiles.
Other option is waiting for fheroes2. They want to allow us simply modding system. H2 is simply H1 expansion. And we can have more and more features than simply game h1. We can add full h1 graphic too! Fheroes1 rather never coming. Is too similiar...

Just copy agg file to folder with Grayface tool. Next run
H1AggUnpack.exe
Command you must wrote is:

H1AggUnpack.exe heroes.agg

That's all!
Pack is the same only pack instead unpack.
