SoD Difficulty tips
So, I am about to start my very first SoD playthrough.
I am a long-time player returned for the quarantine and I haved never finished AB and SoD, just ROE.
I had started SOD long time ago but found the difficulty beyond crazy and gave up.
Now, today, after many years I am back and I am almost finished with AB and I found it quite easy, sometimes even too easy.
I played by maximizing early income, visit all stat boosts and managed to get town portal/DD whenever available. Most scenarios were literally cakewalk, the only memorable battles were the Naga legion in Dragonslayer (easy with force field), the frigging Faerie Dragons and that strong guy in the Mutare campaign, which was nothing a couple of well placed blinds didn't fix.
Now...Sod, my old nemesis, I am almost scared to start it again.
What do you suggest? I won't play anything below "Rook" difficulty, of course.

For Hard and above, it's recommend to hire as much heroes as you can to collect resources, visit external dwellings and rush AI before they develop towns.
Gem(Druid) is weak warrior, so you need to invest in spells and magic skills.

Thanks.
I was wondering, could the HD changes have made the game easier?
I mean, I am on the last Playing with Fire scenario and I noticed I can take the troops away from the garrisons making the map much easier. You could really do that in vanilla AB?

To my knowledge that's how it should work. Here's all the gameplay related bugs fixed in the HD mod.

In Last mission of Playing with Fire, that was intended by NWC, as AB didn't have box to set unmoveable guards.

Most SOD missions are laughably easy on Impossible difficulty. The two outliers are Crag Hack's 2nd mission and Sandro's 2nd (in his second campaign, not the first one). And those are purely winnable by spamming slowblind.
If you want to have some difficulty, try HotA campaigns on impossible

Looks like an interesting read but I am too afraid of spoilers, I want to beat them without reading walk-throughs.

SoD campaigns are not about being able to beat...that's no challenge at all...they are about how fast you can beat them and what rank you achieve in scoring...

Dude if you know the maps by heart I can belive you that it is a cakewalk.
But I am playing this blind and as far as I know, this is one of those campaigns were you need to capture X town in week 1, y town in week 2, z town in week 3 or you lose.
Also you need spell X and skill Y otherwise you're dead in the water.

Ok, I started it and found the first Gem scenario way too easy.
Guess I'll try impossible then.

Don't focus too much on difficulty. Start anyway on 200ù because is the only one where AI does decent things, then save every first day of the week. When you feel you could have done better, just reload then enjoy the maps, some are nicely designed. If you do that, is almost impossible to lose.

Truly. only 200% is satisfied if you play for years and want fight aggainist AI. No orginal campaign scenario is hard in fact.

Oh boy, that initial delay on 200% surely hurts, my first encounter is much harder now.

I know that the whole point is to rush the enemy, but how can you do that if the enemy is protected by huge garrisons and develops his towns much faster than me?

First explore what you can the second part of gameplay conquer cities. Dont attack strongest garrisons. Only smallest. Big enemies at the end. If you have troubles it means good game! Im playing Heroes I and AI is more more more inteligent! Every game is extremly stressfull...

Ok, Gem campaign on Impossible was enjoyable, just some difficulty early on.
Gelu campaign on Impossible was a literal cakewalk, last scenario I think I vanquished the opponent in less than a week.
Now on Crag Hack...
OH boy, that second mission on Impossible is hard. Yet, I got very lucky with the starting refugee camp and got an Archangel!
That little guy helped me clear the stuff around the strongholds. Then blue appeared.
I literally ran away until I conquered all his castles and he ignored me wasting time stealing my stuff until I got a sufficiently threatening army.
Will probably win very soon

The worst part of SoD is rolling skills in "Unholy Alliance" campaign. Like I said, Crag's 2nd and Sandro's 2nd (of the 7th campaign, not the one you have the Cloak) are significantly harder than the rest, and that's not saying much because none is really difficult out there. I found all the campaign missions pretty easy, 200% or not. Blind played them, of course.
But rolling heroes... Seriously. Screw. That.
If you want to get brutalized, Hota's "Terror of the Seas" campaign on 200% with its mission 2 will show you a thing or two.

Will definitely play the HOTA campaigns, but after sod I want to play Chronicles too.
I noticed that the AI is very wary and will rarely attack unless it has massive superiority. I managed to win most of the early Sod scenarios but getting a sufficiently threatening army and slowly scaring the AI away from his towns.

The AI is way too passive without HotA, it will not push the advantage despite having much superior numbers.
You can check my thread after you're done, especially the "maps" section.
