I agree with Blizz here on the subject of abortion. A human being can be traced down to the moment of conception, down to the fusing of a sperm and and egg resulting in a zygote holding a new DNA, which identifies the embryo as an unique individual. Development is irrelevant. Human life is sacred and it should never come into question because of our personal circumstances or desires. A parent who doesn't want their child should not deny their right to live, there are other ways...

But yea, that's just sorting out a very bad situation. Like Sal said, if you don't want to be a parent, then don't copulate in the first place. Keep family things behind wedlock and proper planning. If you want to have "fun" then you have to also acknowledge a range of "consequences".

This is an extremely weak argument, not to mention reeking with peer pressure. How many number of things in history were legalized for the sake of convenience (convenience for more privileged people in society, that is) only to eventually be rejected centuries later? I'm strongly confident that abortion is on the same path btw, especially as technology improves.

That's the nature of human civilization actually. At one point something is considered "how it should be" but then comes a revolution and everything is turned around. Or an authoritarian state comes and censors everything. Fast forward a couple of years in the future and suddenly the majority has different values and practices...

@Stevie

And that is why the issue of abortion is surprisingly similar to implicit bias in society and in the criminal justice system, because both are a matter of people following arbitrary standards to decide who is more or less human and then making a decision based on that. Often times, the decision is based on personal convenience and petty selfishness.

The left in Western society is irrational on some issues (fully blown Marxist are irrational about A LOT of stuff), but they do have very valid points on the issue of race and we shouldn't group issues into large camps and decide that a certain camp is right about everything and another camp is wrong about everything. Politics is messy.

And, it is worth noting, that this includes the most "civilized" societies. As a society gains access to things that they didn't previously have, it's not at all unusual for those things to be abused. Nuclear technology is a really easy example but it includes everything.

So the fact that access to abortion is common around developed, wealthier countries means absolutely nothing, really. So are fast food restaurants and cinemas. It's a completely non-existence argument based on peer pressure. It's an assumption that rich countries always have the moral high ground, which is completely untrue. The contrary has been seen in history like a bagillion times.

Blizz, unless you are trolling, you very well know that it is not just about cognitive tasks but sentinence. (And yes, in this regard, I wouldnt call a person who aborts a fetus cruel but I would call somebody who kills a chimpanzee or elephant cruel, if it’s not in self defense.)

Now, all of this “the minute you are concieved, you are human” stuff had already been discussed in the related thread, being genetically human doesnt mean being a person, a piece of hair is also genetically human, your spit has also unique DNA.

When it comes to your prophecy about the future, the already existing progress proves otherwise, as countries develop and secularize, they free abortion. The only people who label abortion murder are the devoted religious, the idea doesnt make any sense without it. In fact, if we browse the related thread, we’ll see that you didnt make a peep about this before turning Roman Catholic. So please, do everyone a courtesy and stop rationalizing your faith.

What really pisses me off is that he suddenly found his conscience in a thread in which defunding the police is an issue. Because if fetusses have human status, that also means every single "dead" fetus, involuntarily aborted or otherwise ended up dead, has to be investigated. Including postmortem. Fetus involuntarily aborted, but mom drank two glasses of wine the night before and smoked a couple of cigarettes. Manslaughter. Didn't know she was pregnant? Ok, involuntary manslaughter. Mom fell down the stairs - accident or murder? The possibilities are endless.

As if not enough people were criminalized due to the religiously motivated vice laws in the US, no, the US need more prisons, more laws, more police, more courts, and more deals to put more people in jail and make that business even more profitable.

I will be happy to shift the conversation back, but I'm not interested in what does or doesn't make you angry. And that's another strawman argument because nobody except you said anything about increasing incarcerations. So, if you want to be mad about something that you created in your head, go ahead. You've been surviving off of polarizing people since the first page so I don't expect you to change now.

It's your scenario. You brought it up, off-topic. And you just didn't think it through - it's not like the crime aspect would be the only one, if you handed out human status to fetusses. Not at all.
But you just wanted to have a little trolling fun, I get that.
However, it gets old after a time.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, the decision on abortion laws will go back to the states (I don't agree with such state laws either, but that is what would happen). Women will travel to states with legal abortions, and there won’t be any legal way to respond to abortion tourism. Women who cannot leave their home states will be able to acquire abortion pills and even over-the-phone counseling to follow through. There is no way that it’s realistic, practical, or even charitable to interrogate every woman who has a miscarriage, but it will no longer be state-sanctioned extermination of people all orchestrated under highly questionable and shady consensual terms with men frequently playing an extremely heavy hand in a distressed woman's decision to abort, and state's laws do indeed affect cultural attitudes. There are plenty of places where abortion is completely or mostly restricted and these sort of hysterical scenarios you bring up don't generally reflect real life and they completely dismiss the everyday damage that abortion already causes, legal or otherwise.

I'll leave you to write another flimsy polemic and then not respond.

Yes, to be fair, you brought it up as in “what about abortion, Sal.” Don’t know what you were thinking. But Blizz  took it to “abortion= murder=fetus lives matter” level, which is completely how we ended up in comparing apples and oranges.

I gave you my position on a social level, but on personal level I find abortion to be extremely selfish and cruel.

You know how keen I am about individual responsibility so I can't stand the "my body my choice" crap when exactly it is your body, so take preventive measures to avoid butchering another innocent life just because now you estimate not being ready for motherhood. You want NOW the control you didn't care before.

However, unwanted kids will have an unwanted life, much more struggle and suffering, so that's why on a social level I have not much choice but accept abortion.

I recommend watching this story about unwanted kids life agony in the country I came from.
