This is one of the best "historical" movies out there. And if they can change historical figures races, why it is even important to be historically correct anymore?
And yeah, the Directors Cut version is more accurate.

Blacksmith from France travels to the Levant, gets there alive, fights a trained Saracen and wins, gets his own barony, discovers well digging, which for some reason, the people who lived there for thousands of years never thought of, manages to woo ****ing Sybilla with no effort whatsoever, survives bs combat encounters (the 3 on 1 encounter with fully armored knights for example), falls in grace of the king, ends up successfully organizing the defense of Jerusalem with knowledge of ballistics and engineering which came out of nowhere, and still manages to survive the Saracen onslaught to negotiate with Saladin himself. All that without wearing a basic helmet for 90% of the movie. And he makes it back home. Alive.
