It has barely been a week since the beginning of Spring and the new year, and festivities show no sign of dying out. Even from a distance, one can see the city draped in bright colours. Five banners hang over the gates, with one of them larger than the rest. The massive walls are covered by lush green vines, while red and white flowers match the coloured ribbons hanging from the towers. In the fields, just off the west entrance to the city, stand scarecrows decorated similarly. The gate guards' dark blue cloaks shift between black and purple under the light of the setting sun.

Among the weary travellers, merchants, and farmers passing through the city gates, only a handful do not have intertwined red and white ribbons somewhere on their body. For the guards, they are around the tip of their spears, where wood meets metal. These same guards appear to be in great spirits, with one of them flirting casually with one of the farmers. The blonde, on the younger and curvier side, brushes him off cordially before passing through.

Beyond the gate, visitors to the city have to pass through the arching canopy of tall trees for hundreds of metres. After that, smaller streets break off on either side of the main road, though it quickly becomes apparent that most craftsmen have closed their workshops, retiring for the day. A bit further into the city, a round building towers over its surroundings. Its presence dominates the area, and the sounds and scents coming from it cover everything else. Those familiar with similar establishments will recognise the arena for what it is, even without the countless stalls surrounding it.

A man walks up the road to the gate. His brown hair and beard obviously cared for. His polished armor and the equally polished shield on his back gleam in the bright Spring sun. A small red and white cluster of ribbons is tied to the spear strapped between his back and shield. And probably the only thing around that shines brighter than his armor is his smile. He eagerly approaches people on his way in.

"Happy New Year to you! Ah, miss, let me help you with that! It doesn't matter that you neither need nor asked for my help, I'm happy to give it anyway!.. Well, there's no cause for that... all I'm saying is tha... ok, if you're sure... AH! Noble guards, valiant defenders of the city! How goes your day, fellas?"

...

The two guards take a quick look at the man nearly harassing the locals. The younger one, a Sapiens by the looks of it, perks a brow and gives a knowing smirk before speaking in a thick local accent.

"Starting the festivities a bit early, aren't you?"

The older one, a grizzled Wampyr, just chuckles and shakes his head, muttering something under his breath before looking at the man, trying to look at least somewhat professional.

What's your reason for coming here, sir?

Despite the questioning, his body language remains casual, with no sign of aggression.

The door was open.

The crack infiltration team streamed into the once-sealed laboratory, seeking hidden knowledge to preserve and relics to hunt as they had a hundred times before. Scav’s ears buzzed as he heard the hum of machinery that seemed a reverent chorus in his ears. Yes, he could feel it. There was something worth all the trouble it took to get into this ruin after all.

Boro and Toro took up their places near the door as the rest of the team got to work. Alanna’s fingers were a blur as she powered on a nearby console and began to coax its secrets into the stagnant air. Geez began searching for components to harvest or intact records, keeping wary in case anyone needed medical attention. Scav went to the back; the best loot was always in the back for some reason, and it would be his job to sell it.

The room was small, so this was a quick in-and-out job. The client had secured access to this lab in exchange for clearing out the gang the lived around it and bringing any data they could salvage; Scav was free to sell anything else they found. He and his team had made a name on their ability to get things no one else could, and whatever they could sell from a job would be taken from the finder’s fee. Many jobs had ended with no cost to the clients, meaning many were eager to point them toward treasures hidden in the wastelands of what had once been Eastern Europe.

This had been a simple job. The mercs they’d hired would still be chasing the dregs of the pathetic gang that had once lived just outside, and Scav couldn’t help wondering why his premium services were needed when the client could have done the same work with a few thugs-for-hire. Alanna had already hacked the console and stood watching the screen as the client-provided thumb drive – a rarity this late after the calamity that had landed society in the mess it was in now – filled up and brought them ever closer to their goal.

It was refreshing to have a job go so smoothly, but something nagged in the back of Scav’s mind as he stared at the blinking light on the end of the drive.

Geez glanced over. “Already done, I see,” he said wryly, a subtle reprimand that Scav still had a job to do.

“Yeah, yeah, old man,” Scav said fondly. The grizzled old engineer was a grumpy snow, but he was the best at what he did and was Scav’s oldest partner in crime, such that the word had any meaning anymore.

He turned at looked at the back wall and began to comb for relics and other valuables. Not long into his search, he uncovered another thumb drive and tossed it over to Alanna.

“Heads up. Might have more data for you.”

She caught the second drive and plugged it in to search its contents as the data continued to download onto the first drive. The new drive started to blink as well when plugged in, in perfect sync with the first, and the nagging itch resurfaced as the room itself seemed to groan and stir. As the door sealed off their only exit, Scav sounded the retreat.

“We gotta—”

“—go!” The echo of the last word echoed into a hollow husk filled only with dust and garbage and the bodies of his team. The comforting hum of the machines and the thrill of discovery gave way to terror and disorientation, and Scav’s mind immediately began trying to appraise the situation, to rationalize what he’d seen.

The entire room seemed to have decayed a few centuries beyond what it had been just a moment before, as if catapulted forward in time. But Scav was unchanged, and the bodies on the floor seemed to have died just moments before. If they had somehow leapt forward in time, it had affected all of them. But then what had killed everyone else and why was he spared?

None of the bodies had any visible markings and four simultaneous natural deaths seemed unlikely at best. Something had happened; someone was responsible. And they were going to regret leaving this loose end.

He pulled out his comm, but it answered only static. For now, it seemed, he was alone. But he knew how to be alone, knew how to survive the longest odds. And now he had a goal.

He buried the fallen and set out into an unfamiliar, and likely hostile, world.

Along the dusty road leading into the maw of the city's Western gate Pegasus was stumbling under the weight of the several enormous bags somehow balanced on its back. The old greyish nag, more likely to set off for the Underworld than for the sky, pleadingly glanced at its master, equally spent and scruffy from the long journey South. The man, not minding the horse's unease, continued to steadily prance on the path, mercilessly pulling on the reins, as if not prompting but dragging his flagging jade. The joyful beams of the morning sun greatly annoyed him so he was hurrying to hide under the pleasant shade of Solun's mighty walls. Despite his irritation, a wide smile shone from under his patchy wide-brimmed hat, exuding both bliss and ferocity.

The pair faltered on the roadside as soon as they reached the coolness in front of the arched gateway. The traveller unbuttoned his long colourless sleeved mantle, undressed it, laid it on the groud and just as he was about to sit on top of it, he decided against it, picked it up, brushed some dirt off and put it on again. The sea breeze felt chilly now that he was in the shadows. Carelessly resting there without a top might get him sick and a sickness would mean needless expenses. The man scoffed at the thought and settled down with his back facing the walled city. He grinned at the view and took out a half-eaten loaf of hard rye bread and a bit of dry white cheese from under his cloak.

The two guards glance at Tarkas, then at each other before chuckling. The older man eyes him briefly, then pats his shoulder.

-"In you go, sir... enjoy your stay in Thessaloniki."
- "...and good luck with your destiny"

As Tarkas was ushered in, he'd hear the two guards speaking quietly to each other, in a tone that was equal parts amused and bemused.

- "Bright-eyed fool like that? they'll eat him alive..."
- "Yup... we'll be throwing salutes his way by the end of the month... if he survives their b--"

Whatever was about to be said was cut short as the two guards turned their attention to one of the travelers who stopped to take a breather with his overburdened (and ironically named) horse. Their conversation continued in hushed voices, as not to be heard by the man in question.

- "Haven't seen that in a while..."
- "He's probably new around these parts. At least he looks better than the horse..."
- "Should we...?"
- "Nah, let him be, pup... no law against sitting down. You don't want the Hunter breathing down your neck for abuse of power, do you?"
- "Nope"
came a response that was all too swift "...or the Witch..."

This last comment sent a shiver down the spine of both men, who were quick to resume their duties at the gate, not harassing weary travellers.

Thanking the watchmen for their kind words, Tarkas walked into the city proper. His eyes were wide with excitement as his mind raced.

Ok then, destiny, destiny, destiny... where are you?.. This is city is really nice though, isn't it? All pristine and sparkly. I like it already, He thinks, noticing how his shiny armor blends in nicely in the general feel of cleanliness. And they have so many trees!.. Not sure what for, though... Right! Destiny! Ummmm.... where are those people going? Ah, the arena! Good place as any to start!

And so, still smiling and greeting everyone on his way, Tarkas made his way towards the arena.

Another day dragged on into eternity for Vosh as he kept trying to piece together a few more phrases from whichever texts he'd been able to procure during his stay in the city.  Of course, money alone is enough to ease the communication between people, no matter what world they come from, but no amount of money lasts forever and, being aware of that fact, Vosh was on and off brainstorming various ways of making more.  Performing magical acts on the streets would've been one way of doing that, alas, he would not stoop so low as to be a mere entertainer for the passersby.  No, he wanted something more glorious, something more prestigious.  Working with the city's scholars would certainly count, but any attempt at that would be thwarted by the language barrier.  That prospect would have to wait for now at least.
Feeling mentally exhausted, Vosh decided to take an evening walk outside and see if he could practice the language with some of the locals.

After a long respite, during which the sun had risen high up in the sky, the traveller finally stood up. He caught his overburdened horse, busy chewing on some stray weeds next to the road, by the reins and pulled on them harshly. Pegasus puffed in protest but nonetheless followed to the gate.

The man was a foreigner, yet still an Arcadian, an especially greedy one at that, so he couldn't help but worry how much the city guards, whom he greeted with a greasy and insincere smile, would demand from him as the customary for these parts 'entrance fee'.

Both men kept somewhat of a distance, contrary to the usual practice of getting closer to facilitate a little greasing of the wheels. The younger guard would break off after a moment, moving to intercept another traveler that seemed to be bothering a local woman, leaving Dragan alone with the older guard.

'My humble self is looking to offer what little skill I have to the Great archon as a civil servant for the benefit of this brilliantly bright city of His', said the man in a surprisingly pleasant deep voice. Even though he was a foreigner, his Grecian was fluent and with only a slight Slavian accent. 'I had heard that Solun was the pearl of the Diarchy, but now that I am here, all the hearsay pales in comparison to the actual marvel of this wondrous place. Say, do you happen to know where I might find one Kostas Kiriakos, a merchant?', he asked, still maintaining his dishonest smile.

The elder guard perked a brow, giving Dragan a slow look over, then pursed his lips briefly.

Can't say that I do, sir... but you may have some luck asking at the arena. Just keep going, can't miss it.

With that, he gestured the man to go in, apparently without the customary bribe.

Past the gate, the road was well paved and people moved faster to their destination. For most of them, that seemed to be the round building in the distance, the grand arena. Of course, anyone who had been in the city just a few years earlier would know the place as little more than a hole in the ground for people to smack each other in.

Now... it was a very different situation. The tall building towered over the rest and was surrounded by stalls and people promoting their crafts. Street performers would try to grab attention by performing impressive acts, all under the blue banners of the Sons of Herakles, the gang that controlled the western bailey of the city.

From inside the arena, one would hear the crowd chanting, as the various fighters came out to play. At this particular moment, they seemed to be especially agitated, as a chant rose above all others.

Hun-ter! Hun-ter!

"Not again..."

Scav was good at adapting to unforeseen situations. The wastes changed often, and those unable to adapt were soon swallowed and forgotten. It was clear he'd been long forgotten, but he refused to be go down easy.

Yet every contact he'd tried to track down, every cache he'd checked, every mote of safe harbor he'd enjoyed had long since gone to dust. Something was clearly wrong, and only over the course of failure after failure did Scav come to terms with the bitter truth: everything and everyone he'd after known was far beyond his reach, lost to the sands of time.

Through his information-gathering endeavors, he'd discovered that the Sundering had happened 240 years ago, making this the year 2250, a year he'd assume was far beyond what he would see. But as it became clear he had nothing left save for what he held, Scav pressed on. He was a survivor, dammit, and he would survive. That meant establishing new contacts, building new resources, starting from Square One.

The walled city that stood before looked as if it had come straight from a medieval storybook, banners flapping in the winds in colors brighter than you saw in the wastes. It was the final proof that he could never go back to the world he'd known.

Scav headed through the gate, keeping his head down.

The Arena, Western Bailey, Thessaloniki

The Arena had definitely improved in the last few years. What one was little more than a hole in the ground, was now a building that stood several stories tall. Elliptical in shape, it had several rows of seats along its perimeter, split into 10 different sections.

Of those, four stood out more than the rest, and one among them slightly more so. The first one with decorated in red and black, with the same bird that appeared in one of the city's banners. The third, was yellow and black, brandishing a shield and spear. The fourth was draped in black and white, displaying the eagle with the shield. Lastly, the most prominent one was the tenth, in blue and white, featuring the banner with the club, arrow, and torch.

At the center, one would find several pits, some larger or deeper than the rest, along with a few elevated rings. Around each of those were the contestants, trainers, and all others directly involved in the fights. A bit further away were the various bookers, exchanging quick bets with the crowd with a fervor that would be the envy of any stock market.

While normally there would be multiple fights taking place at the same time, it appeared that the crowd was focused on one of the shallower pits, where two fighters had just entered. ...or rather, a fighter and a monster. In one corner, stood a man of slender build, fairly handsome by most standards but not that much more than most in the audience. What truly set him apart was a full head of silvery-white hair, coming down to his shoulders, now caught in a half-tail. He was idly rolling his shoulders as he sized his opponent up, his mouth curled into a faint smirk.

His opponent was a lot more agitated, with more than two dozen men having to restrain him. His arms and legs held in place by thick metal chains, while a permanent snarl showcased a mouth full of sharp teeth. He was twice as tall and many times more muscular than the other fighter. His most distinguishing feature, however, was the single eye in the middle of his forehead. This would be a fight between man and cyclops and there would be only one to walk away.

As the chants of the crowd got louder, the silver-haired man would lift one hand to silence them. He then made a gesture and the struggling men let go of the chains holding the giant back.

The show was on.

A dull roar billowed over the city nearby, countless voices cheering in unison. He had to ignore his instincts to stay away, to flee to the long-abandoned corners of the world as he always had. Unfamiliar crowds were dangerous in the wastes, but if his wanderings over the past days... had it been weeks?... had taught him anything, it was that this world played by different rules.

He'd always had an eye for value, and as resource-poor as he was the thing he was starved most for now was information. He'd ask around eventually, but it would be safer for now simply to observe.

The cheering rose to a fever pitch as he began to wander the markets outside the arena. Commerce was, after all, the thing he knew best.

The Arena, Western Bailey, Thessaloniki

--As soon as the chains were loose, the cyclops lunged at the white-haired man, reaching out to grab him by the head. Not intending to end up as a smear on the walls, he quickly ducked out of the way and reached for his weapons. Those familiar with the local culture, and Arcadian warfare in general, would know that his choice was highly irregular. Instead of the round hoplon of Grecian soldiers, he was now holding a small buckler, barely large enough to cover his forearm and hand. Additionally, where one would wield a spear, he was armed with a mere dagger, similarly shaped but shorter than even the traditional sidearm, the xiphos. Stranger yet was the fact that he was completely lacking in armour, with only boots and pants on. In most cases, going against a cyclops like that was suicidal.

The crowd cheered louder as the fight finally began. The people outside would begin to gather faster in response. Among them, were now several merchants, including Dragan's acquaintance, who had just closed their shops and were looking for some entertainment. The ones with their wares just outside the arena were also trying to figure out what was going on. A murmur was going around, in hushed or louder tones.

"The hunter is fighting a cyclops unarmed!

The situation inside was similar now, with even the other fighters gathering around to see what was going on. A stream of people appeared from the bowels of the Arena, where they usually were while preparing, to watch the outcome of this highly unusual pairing. The only person in the entire Arena that appeared entirely unphased by the situation was a scantly clad dark-skinned woman with translucent veils over much of her body. She kept her hands in front of her, watching the fight with an almost bored look on her face.
