Upon hearing the Archon's words Cyrus laughs bitterly. "You sure we aren't talking about the same thing?" He doesn't expect an answer however, and remains silent. He listens as the rest of the conversation goes on, absorbing what Alex is explaining and formulating plans and strategies in his mind.
He zones out a bit, lost in a strange blend of self-loathing for being so weak and falling apart in front of strangers and half cocked theories floating around his mind. Metaphysical studies wasn't exactly something they had taught him at the Institute. Even so, it was something he had started to understand with his journey across the..... the what? Multiverse? That thought was enough to cause his eyes to cross. People's minds weren't made for issues this big.
He zones back in when Vosh starts speaking. Based on the way he spoke, carried himself, and his choice of career Cyrus guessed the bald man was a scholar. A researcher perhaps? Archivist? The first question is indeed troubling, something Cyrus would like to know the answer to as well. The second question is so easy to answer that Cyrus has to stop himself from scoffing. Through combat your enemy is revealed. Going off of what Alex has said, it seems they have been fighting these Voidborn for sometime. Long enough that a basic understanding of the creatures has been attained.
Simon's question had merit though. And it was enough to draw Cyrus into the conversation. Who wasn't sure about Alex and Selene, but he had a feeling that amongst this ragtag group of adventurers, he was the most experienced with portals. He had been using them to skip across the universe.
"I might have an idea of how that one got here." Cyrus piped up. Looking at Simon, he continued. "I believe when Ivana ran, and I chased her, she somehow punched a hole through the void and into another realm, which we then fell through. Doing so would've weakened the natural barrier that separates everything. Like punching a hole through a glass window. Crass and destructive."

Scav let the conversation flow around him, feeling no desire to add to the growing mound of questions even though he had many of his own. There was a power in questions, to be sure, but until he knew the right questions to ask he needed to process. Half the people at this table could probably pluck out his questions with a thought, in any case. He'd speak up with a few choice words if that happened, assuming he wasn't curled up on the floor in agony again.
He began to feel more and more glum as the conversation progressed, with talk of inter-dimensional beings that would not have been out of place in a Lovecraftian horror story. Many at this table -- maybe all if the thief had truly punched a hole in spacetime -- had fantastical abilities of their own, a way to tangibly fight back the encroaching chaos. He still had no idea what was possible in this world, but the archon ruled a nation-state and was perhaps as well-versed in the possible as any Scav had ever met. And for some reason he insisted a displaced treasure hunter belonged in this group of Greek demigods. Why was that?
Alex had said that the brains among them were the ones that would need to solve this, but how could you understand something you cannot dissect and cannot observe in anything but a life-and-death struggle? How did you tame chaos? He was in no position to answer this question at the moment, so he simply listened to those who might be. After all, half of knowing was realizing how little you know. The other half was pushing beyond those boundaries, and he'd have plenty of time to do that. Hopefully.

The archon took a long sip from his coffee, trying hard to keep a straight face at Tarkas' outburst. He smirked faintly, then leaned a touch closer to the table and gestured toward Ivana, Vosh, and Cyrus.
"Take a good whiff, my friend... these three may be human, but they don't smell quite right. Slightly different flavour of sapiens, I'd reckon..."
It was now time for Selene to speak, looking at those present before her voice was heard, as melodic as ever but lacking the otherworldly quality it had earlier. She turned her gaze to Simon first, though a delicate hand would indicate Cyrus after the latter spoke.
"I believe he already answered your question adequately." She briefly looked at Ivana, eyes narrowing a touch. "This young lady is oblivious to her own abilities... which almost ended up in disaster." She idly ran her fingers through the hair of her daughter in her lap. "We are lucky that the doorway led to the Realm of Death, instead of the Void itself. Most Aranen have little desire to slay indiscriminately or conquer the land of the living..."
She then turned her attention to Vosh. "As to your questions... I could already tell that you are not native to this world ...yet. Lana sensed it as well. After that, it was simply a matter of confirming it by skimming through your surface thoughts." She sounded almost smug when she said that, until noticing Alexander's eyes on her. She would quickly lower her gaze, and her tone would turn more apologetic. "...which was a breach of decorum and hospitality that I am deeply regretful for."
She shifted slightly in her seat before glancing at Vosh once more. "And yes, I have been researching the Voidborn for several decades now, it is what contributed to my exile from the lands of Avalon and my rightful place in the court of Albion." She glanced around the group again, briefly looking at the Idurati princess. "Everyone here is Empowered. This makes us at once the most likely targets of the Voidborn, as well as the only ones capable of defeating them." Her eyes then stopped on Scav "...of course, pre-Sundering technology is also capable of harming them."

Ivana was shocked with many things that sprouted from the conversation. Her eyes darted fast between them but mostly focused on the white-haired lady and the man he came out with from the portal. Her ears rang when she heard they spoke her name. Nobody in the group knew her name except for the wizard. But what had triggered her was when they spoke about how she was able to open a portal on her own.
"What are you talking about?!", she almost shouted as she stood, slamming her palms on the table, "I have nothing to do with that!"
Fear and confusion was evident in her eyes and for a moment after she spoke, she realized she let out a different language though she was sure she spoke her own which gave her chills. She glanced at the white-haired lady but retracted her gaze soon enough. Ivana would not want to taste more of her magic but she concluded that the change to her speech was her doing. The thief was disgusted, she hated being manipulated. Ivana clenched her fist as anger crawled on her. Her chance of going back home had gone slim.
She didn't like how they were accusing her of opening the portal which was something she's not capable of, at least not that way.

Simon nodded along to Cyrus' explanation, and then raised an eyebrow at each of the outworlders when the witch pointed them out, considering them for a few seconds. Well now, that might explain some things, but first...
To Tarkas, Simon said, "Yes, of course there's a multiverse. What, you think portals opening up to formerly mythical realms and times were just imagination come to life or something? You can enter these places for as long as they remain stable and open... risky, though. Don't want to get caught on their side like people from there get caught on ours." His surface thoughts briefly flashed to the time that he went on a quick little heist where he'd gotten his dagger, but he returned to the matter at hand quick enough.
"But these ones being from a world with magic would make sense. All outworlders still resonate with the world they come from, so they don't exactly belong here and that's why they're prone to stumbling through further portals... or something like that." A scientist had tried to explain this to him at some point in the past. He'd grasped some of the basics, though the technical aspects still escaped him. To Ivana he says, "So don't go running off on your own again, we don't want you getting even more lost than now." Especially not if there were things hanging around waiting to take advantage of those holes the girl was accidentally punching in reality.
Simon's eyes would narrow slightly at the witch when she mentioned surface thoughts, and the echo of a cackling corvid pulsed through his mind. He'd have to see if she looked at him funny. For now he'd keep a tight reign on his thoughts and said, "So then, Empowered, Infused and really, really scary futuristic tech are necessary to kill these things. If we were going to start collecting resources to get ready for the coming fights... well, only the pre-sundering tech doesn't require advertising what's going on or kidnapping."

Scav kept his expression blank as Selene explained, even as within him swirled a thick slush of uncertainty, dread, and denial. He was not here. This was all a dream. He'd wake up soon and be with his team again, ready to go on another adventure. Especially in his younger days, he'd craved the excitement setting into the unknown had provided, another day taming the Wastes. Now they'd been fully tamed and beaten back again by civilization, and seemingly replaced with something that was perhaps untamable. The excitement was gone, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he'd been dragged through the centuries to deal with this threat. But who would have done that? And why him? The latter question had been bouncing around in his head the entire conversation, and it only added to his growing doubt.
Selene's admission that she was skimming his surface thoughts, everyone's surface thoughts, only added to the unease he felt, especially given the casual nature of his revelation. Depending on the archon's information about how he could be trained to better adapt to this world, he might not want to join this group of casual power flaunters. Well, that was unfair, but the thought stuck inside his skull all the same. All he could do was promise to hear the archon out, and to never become casual about whatever power he wielded. Too much power in a single hand would always end in disaster, and he knew that better than most.
And then Alex mentioned that Pre-Sundering tech could harm them and a familiar rush settled on Scav like a warm blanket. His harried mind latched on the familiarity of the need and he could not hold his questions in any longer. "Is that to be my role, gathering Pre-Sundering tech? I mean, if you know everything about me," he spared a glance at Selene, realizing she knew about his original time either by extracting his secrets from his mind or by much more direct means, "then you know I specialize in that era. I could continue my work of delving for more tech we could use; would just need a team."
He didn't trust the witch, although he did appreciate that she apparently respected his desire to play his cards close to his chest. Alex probably knew as well, but no one else needed to until he had his feet more firmly planted. His last grasp at familiarity was probably for naught, as it seemed bigger plans for him were in motion, but he had to try regardless.

Tarkas frowned when Selene mentioned invading their minds, but seemed to quickly accept her apology. As the conversation moved deeper into the hows and whys of portal opening he got bored and started slowly eating grapes from a nearby table. However, he did perk up when Scav mentioned hunting Pre-Sundering technology.
"I would happily volunteer for such a team! I know I have a lot of training to do, but this sounds important. And I can get better by doing.. And Scav and myself are technically already partners... And that will be a great adventure that I do not want to miss!"

Cyrus was content to let the conversation continue. He had offered his insight and that was all that was needed. He had taken to sitting in a chair a few minutes ago, the fear that he could be betrayed still clung to his bones and paranoia still sung in the back of his mind, but for now it was able to be ignored. The embarrassment and shame still burned through him however. How could he be so weak? So fragile and frail as to fall apart completely in front of strangers. He was better than that. Stronger. So why? Why, why, why, why? Did Selene's intrusion affect him that deeply? Did it frighten him that much? Was it Ivana and her portal? Did that somehow scramble his brain? Was it all these strangers? What had made him react like that? Cyrus was replaying the past hour over in his mind. Replaying it, examining it, rewinding it, playing it again. Obsessing over it. What was the cause? Usually he was okay, usually he could control himself until he was in someplace private. So why?!?! He was sinking deeper into his own self loathing and misery but was pulled out when Selene mentioned her casual reading of surface thoughts.
He couldn't help the scoff, shoring up his battered shields. "Yes. Please do stay out of my mind. Unless you want to experience first hand just what I am running from." His remark was caustic, scathing. As well as a threat. Too often had the Institute burrowed inside his mind. It was the one place that was his. His entire being, had belonged to them. But his mind, that was his, and his alone. So to have Selene so casually skim through put him on edge. At least he had the decency to try and ignore what he picked up from everyone else.
He rolled his eyes at Ivana's outburst but held back any sarcastic remarks. The girl's ignorance was beginning to truly wear thin. Simon proceeded to say something to Tarkas about the multiverse, which elected a memory about stealing a dagger. Then explaining more about portals and resonance, Cyrus was only half listening. His attention was focused on Scav.
The was almost as paranoid as Cyrus was. As well as full of doubt. Seemingly wishing that this was all a dream. That he would wake up and his life would return to normal. Cyrus felt a pang of sympathy. Out of all the people here, Scav was the only one who came from a world of technology and not magic. They were kindred spirits in that regard. In all his travels, all the worlds he had visited, most of them had been in line with his home. All technologically advanced, cars and guns. That sort of thing. The last few worlds, plus this one he now found himself in, were the ones that had broken that trend.
Scav's interest piqued at the idea of recovering more Pre-Sundering technology. A return to the ways he was familiar with. Of course that elation was tinged with the bitterness of not wanting anything to do with the people currently at this table. The was secretive and distrustful. For what reasons, well, Cyrus wasn't going to pry.
And then Tarkas was speaking and his whole damn mind was shining like a goddamn star and Cyrus had to mentally look away, cringing in his chair a little bit. How in the nine circles of hell can one man be so bright and happy? So cheerful? The idea of an adventure, the experience, the journey. They all appealed to him. Ah, it was naivety. Like a young knight out of a fantasy novel. Wanting to go on a grand adventure to slay the big bad evil. God the man was irritating. So bright and loud. It was infuriating. So why.... why was he turning back to look, why was his mind drawn to the star-like mind of Tarkas? Why was he somewhat calmed by it and-
Wait. What? No. No. Absolutely not! He wasn't about to be drawn to a bright mind like a damn moth to a flame. Hell no. He'd rather lop off his own head or set himself on fire. This wasn't happening. Cyrus refused. Denial is always the first part of crus- Cyrus grabbed the traitorous whisper in his mind and promptly eviscerated it. Nope. He was not, no, he wasn't. Absolutely he was not. Totally not. Who are you trying to convince? Me or yourself? Cyrus scowled before remembering where he was and quickly schooled his features back to something neutral. Hopefully no one noticed.
He was about to start zoning out again when something Simon had said earlier popped back into his mind. "Magic??? Uh, no. I am not from a world with magic. I didn't even know magic existed until like.... two weeks ago. Also I would just like to say that I am not magical. What I do is not magic." He said, looking at Simon again, or rather, his left eyebrow.

Alexander moved behind Selene's seat, placing a hand on her shoulder, the other busy holding the ice cold glass of coffee as he sipped from it. He gaze a light squeeze as she looked at Vosh. "Some of you already knew. It would damage trust worse if the rest of you were to find out later."
She then turned her gaze to Cyrus. "It may be prudent to visit your memories in the future, to better protect us all from your captors..." She paused for a moment, glancing up at Alexander who looked back at her and nodded. "...but I will only do so with your permission."
Her attention then turned to Scav and offered a light smile toward him. "Do not be overly concerned about your lack of ...magic. There is no such thing as magic to begin with." She carefully set her daughter down now, nudging her with a hand to run off toward her twin and the two-headed dog, who were standing nearby.
She then sprawled her fingers over the tabletop, and a ball of orange light appeared hovering in the middle. The more technologically minded among them might liken it to a hologram. Her eyes fell on Simon for a brief moment, before looking at others. "You posses more knowledge than most. I am impressed... but your mentor either did not know or intentionally left out some details..."
She gestured toward the orange ball of light, when she spoke, it was as if she was reciting something. "This is the Prime Realm. Regardless of the reality, regardless of the universe, that's here. That's home. That's us. In it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every mortal being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there. "
Alexander tried to hold back a smirk, whispering something to her, clearly amused by what she said, or perhaps her delivery. Regardless, he gave her shoulder another squeeze."Go on love..."
She pursed her lips somewhat, then continued, as a white sphere appeared, roughly the same size as the first, hovering above it. "But... what I said is not entirely accurate. This was the Realm of Time. Faerie. Where Mithbar was." The locals, of course, would recognise that name as the world that collapsed during the Sundering, forcing every non-human back to Earth. A ring appeared around the white sphere, with five spheres attached to it, each of a different colour. Red, Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow.
"Mithbar touched the Inner Realms... Energy, Death, Ether, Matter, Life. It shaped all who found themselves there... and when it collapsed..." The white sphere suddenly imploded, with black veins creeping in, even as the "ring" descended to sit around the orange sphere, with the black tendrils following suit. "...along with the stronger connection to the Inner Realms, we also inherited the breaches into the Void." With a snap of her fingers, the whole table was covered with copies of the same display, some with the white sphere still there. "This setup exists in some form across at least one multiverse..."
She then waved her hand, causing everything to fade away before she turned her eyes to Ivana, frowning a touch. "As for you, little thief... I think I will have to personally train you to avoid any more incidents like that."
Alexander turned to Tarkas finally. "Don't worry, we will all be doing some of that... but good that you remember who's supposed to have your back."

Scav's expression froze when Selene reassured him that his lack of 'magic' was of no concern in this world. He forced a calm into his features that he did not feel. Sure, he'd been worried that his lack of magic, empowering, quirks, or whatever the hell they called it here would make him unable to fulfill whatever purpose he'd been brought through the eras to accomplish, but he'd never actually said that part out loud. Well, except to Tarkas, but she didn't seem the type to skulk about and eavesdrop. Why bother when you could just pop in a hand and air out whatever dirty laundry you pleased? The sheer casual audacity of it all pierced through Scav's thoughtful caution and his jaw clenched as he spit acid her way.
Speaking of damaging trust, I'd appreciate it if you'd take care not to reveal all my doubts and weaknesses to this group. He made the thought as intense as he could, hoping it would reach her even were she not actively searching his thoughts. She had turned away and was speaking to the others one by one, so she either hadn't heard or would respond in her own time. The space to breathe brought back some of the caution and he tried to dial down the intensity, hoping the rest of his thoughts could escape her notice. Some things were meant to be his alone. There had to be some way to stop this trespass, but the technology he was familiar with would not be up to the task. After all, why bother to defend against something you believe is not even possible? For all he knew, it had been back then. Did this magic-esque exist back then?
He was about to interject when Selene began to explain important details about the realm, so he jammed a lid on the kettle while steam slowly built up inside. When the sphere displays scattered across the table, he reached out to touch the nearest but his hand simply passed through. Shame, interactive holograms were never something they figured out before the Sundering, and surely some technology had to have advanced beyond where his society had ended. Although if it had, why was only pre-Sundering tech able to hurt the Voidborn? There had to be a reason, just like there had to be some reason shooting fireballs didn't count as magic. His diversion consumed in the flames of the burning question eating away at him from inside, the frustration continued to build inside Scav. He needed to find another distraction.
And along came Ether and Void, which were the fantasy novels of his era any indication were some sort of elemental energy that was somehow different from that in the Realm of Energy. Matter? Time? Death? Were these realms somehow the foundations of this world or separate places altogether? What is "void" and why was it leaking everywhere? Why wasn't it called magic? He boiled, not even noticing she had finished her explanation, no idea if the calm mask he'd set in place had held. He was usually pretty good at keeping it up even as his intense temper flared, but that had always been in familiar surroundings. Surroundings where everything made sense. Why can't I just call it magic?
Something in him snapped at the questions beyond questions with no answers, but just as he dialed back into the conversation and prepared to plow through rudely with his question, the bald wizard -- they'd all really have to introduce themselves sooner or later -- jumped in and asked the very same question. Scav tensed to charge forward, figuratively speaking, but just barely registered what had just been said before he had a chance to do so. Befuddled and a little deflated, he could only muster a wild stare at Selene, silently daring her to answer with more riddles and questions, to draw his other questions from his mind rather than his personal thoughts, to keep them waiting here any longer than was needed to get to work. The sooner they did that the sooner he could find his way back home and rest. He was over all this magic-ish mumbo-jumbo, but most of all he was just so very, very tired.

Tarkas was getting bored again. He looked around the group, taking in his little group of Argonauts. Some of them seemed angry, some irritated. Most of them seemed confused. He wished he could help them, but even he realized that at this point they just needed tine to process. Which was understandable, there was a lot of new information and most people would need time to understand what it all means and find their place in all of it.
Tarkas had no such problems. He accepted things as they are. More importantly, he already knew his purpose and that hasn't changed. His destiny was to help people and become a hero. How exactly will he help them, who exactly will he need to fight, what songs will they sing in his praise... those were all but details that might change from time to time, but won't truly affect him. And yes, the world may have become a lot bigger now, but Thessaloniki was only the second city Tarkas ever visited. So was there really a difference between an enormous world and a humongous one?
He stood up and stretched.
"This all sounds very interesting, but I'll admit that most of it doesn't seem very useful to me. I'd rather stretch my legs and look around. After all, I've only been one day in this magnificent city... and I don't remember most of it."

"I used the term because that's what most people think of it as, because, you know, a guy being able to shoot fire out of his hands, or leak mist that can do things for him? Most people just think, 'magic.' Makes things simple." The wampyri male told Selene, before rubbing a bit at his face. The conversation that was brewing about the nature of the phenomena known as "magic" was something that Simon had drilled into his head by his corvid mentor a while back, sometimes literally, so he was starting to tune that out as well when Tarkas stood up and began to talk.
"We should likely decide on a course of action before going back into town... but I haven't had much chance to explore either. The view from the roof is nice, but hardly is the same as just experiencing the local culture."

Selene turned to Cyrus, offering a bit of a smile in response. "the Voidborn have existed since nearly the beginning of the multiverse, they are not a new threat. That said... I do believe you have the core of our mission down." She nodded slowly at him.
Her lips curled into more of a wicked smile as she looked at Ivana "Do not worry, dear... by the time I am done reforging you, you will be a force of nature. Traversing the multiverse will just be ...Tuesday."
Vosh and Simon got her attention next, and she tapped her lips for a moment before speaking. "Magic implies something that exists outside the natural laws. What we are capable of is well within them. Terminology matters, especially when you are trying to understand how to perform certain acts." She did sigh then. "In essence, however, you are correct, Simon."
In the meantime, the archon had approached Tarkas and Simon, placing a hand on either man's shoulder. "You two have the right idea. The city has much to offer, and you will not have a lot of time to enjoy it... especially if we are to also aid the princess in her quest."
He then slapped his hands together, grinning "So... ladies and gentlemen... You have two days to spend as you please. All your expenses will be covered, so... go wild. We will worry about more concrete plans then. Except for you..." He glanced at Scav "We need to have a word."

Tarkas waved to Scav, saying that he'll wait for a bit in case the scholar wants to explore the city together, and hero moved to a remote corner in order to sit and gather his thoughts when suddenly he stopped and looked around.
"Oh no, this is not right! I just realized we were never properly introduced to each other! I mean, I know Scav and our gracious hosts and I did overhear a couple of names, but we're going to work together. We should at the very least know the names of our companions. Here, I'll start." He turned slowly, trying to catch the eye of everyone in the area as he kept talking, "My name is Epitheus Tarkas, former watchman of Edessa, current slayer of void beasts and future hero of Greece!"
He smiled and looked expectantly at the others.

Scav rubbed the bridge of his nose and took a deep breath, Tarkas' earnestness deflating what remained of his hidden turmoil over a long moment. "Name's Scav," said the traveler, nodding at the group before turning to Alex, impatient for the chance to dig for some personal answers that may relieve some of the pressure he felt welling up in his gut. "Shall we walk?"
