It took a little while before Ivana realized what had happened. Her plans to derail her pursuer had been halted by the weird occurence. She tried to justify her current state, but all she could think of was its either she entered a magical room or her mind was being manipulated. She thought running away will not do any help.

Ivana could see his pursuer, but decided to ignore him at the moment. The new person, she' thought was much more important. The thief look at up at the vastness above her. Disoriented, she said, "Who are you? What's this? Bring me back!"

And she told you, laughing down to her core, so she would not cry, as she lay on your lap,

Scav and Tarkas exited the courtyard, Scav in disarray and Tarkas in a state of concern. Scav noted with relief that no one else followed or tried to stop him. Funny that, this group of misfits hadn't yet come together to become a team, and he only trusted Tarkas to cover his back in the sense that he doubted the earnest man would betray him for self gain. He had no idea what the shiny knight could do, and he hoped getting a chance to find out would congeal this group as they united against a common enemy. The not knowing was grating away at him, and every second they did not know their mission was a second where mistrust and suspicion could cultivate and flourish. And it was all he could do now but wonder what had happened to him.

Nothing in his world could pierce the veil straight through the mind, and Scav was never prone to headaches even in the harsh environs of the Wastes. That could only mean someone was targeting him, and seemingly him only, with some kind of power he could never understand. That's why the man following him was so very important now.

As they rounded the corner into the corridor where the guest rooms were, Scav suddenly turned and pulled Tarkas into his room and glanced up and down the empty hallway before closing the door beginning to pace the length of his accommodations. His eyes were wild with speculation, his features suddenly alert where they had been sluggish. Tarkas only watched, concerned.

"Well, it seems I've had some kind of rapid onset headache that faded away just as quickly, to catch you up on the situation. The only thing I'm certain of here is that it's not natural. I've never had a headache like that in my life, and I have a few years on my belt, to be sure. It must be magic, or some kind of psychic attack." He paused. The next part was sensitive, and crucial.

"I'm, er, not from around here, and back home we don't have these kinds of powers. I think someone in that courtyard was probing or attacking my mind in some way. Could be one of our companions-to-be, could be the archon himself testing my defenses; I just don't know. What kinds of powers allow someone to do that? Are there are any telltale signs of that kind of attack what I should be looking for?"

Scav continued pacing.

Tarkas followed Scav all the way to his room. He stayed quiet seeing worry on his companion's face and intent in his stride. Once they got into the room, the historian began pacing around. Something agitated him greatly, but Tarkas couldn't figure out what. And then the man started talking about headaches and psychic attacks. Was he just paranoid? Could he have been having some kind of panic attack? They were in an unfamiliar place, arriving there in unclear circumstances, so some worry was fine and even healthy, but this...

"Calm down, friend. Psychic attacks? Nothing of the sort has happened here. I have never heard of anyone even having such abilities. Besides, using them would be the ultimate breach of privacy and what sort of man would do such a thing?" He tried to keep his voice calming and much slower than his usual banter, "Remember that we're still unsure as to what happened yesterday. Your headaches might just be a side-effect of whatever we experienced. A sort of hangover, you know?"

Tarkas watched Scav still pacing around nervously. Maybe changing the subject somewhat would help him focus his mind.

"What I find curious is that twice today you have assumed that magic was involved. First when we talked about how we got here and now with your headache. Why are you so fixated on it? Was magic abundant in the place you call home? Was it used for evil, making you apprehensive of it? Because I can assure you, that it us both rare here and can very well be used for good. Why just yesterday I've been told that the archon himself has a witch watching over him."

"Hmph, a magical hangover? Why isn't anyone else we've seen suffering ill effects, then?" He paused, taking a few breaths before continuing less confrontationally. "Magic was never really a thing where I grew up. I live in the past. As a historian, I mean. Think back to the times around the Sundering. A man was limited by the scope of his wits, not the scope of some inborn power. Everything you had, you earned. It was a simpler time, and I desperately wish reality never stretched and warped as it had into this crazy unrecognizable monster it's become." His voice grew steadily quieter as he spoke, though no less intense.

"Magic may be rare overall, but it seems we've become steeped in the damn stuff on this quest. And I feel like I can't breathe because of it." He sighed deeply, thinking of the world he'd lost. Perhaps this would be his only chance to recover it somehow, or at least find out why it was taken from him. "Yet at the same time it's clear this is my path forward. Maybe I can build up a tolerance over time. No, I have to."

He looked up with resolve and continued, "But I won't just let someone target me like this, if that is what's happening here." He held Tarkas' gaze for a moment. "We can go back now, but first let me ask you: how would you feel about trying a spot of deception?"

Tarkas shifted uneasily, looking down at the floor.

"I... I'm sorry, Scav. I didn't know. I didn't think about... I was just so excited to share my power with someone that I didn't realize how you would react. And you coming from a land with no magic even, it must have been even harder to swallow seeing someone with natural power. I'm ashamed of my behavior... but look, "Tarkas raised his head, hope shining in his eyes, "you don't have to be down on yourself! Magic is rare and Infused are even rarer. And you still have a lot going for you! You know things I could never understand! You can work pre-Sundering technology which is truly amazing!"

Tarkas straightened up, standing almost at attention and looked Scav in the eyes.

"Listen, I don't really want to be the kind of hero who uses deception to get things done, but if it helps you regain your self-confidence then I give you my word I will do the best I can!"

Scav regained some of his composure and brushed past Tarkas’ encouragement, overcome by the pride he carried like a talisman even as this strange word threatened to overwhelm him. He figuratively gave Tarkas' words a cursory nod while brushing brusquely his own vulnerability as he moved on. He was a survivor and that would never change, no matter his environment. Wit and grit would have to suffice where he lacked in other areas, and if something proved too powerful to overcome he would stay away as he always had, as he always would.

“Thanks, Tarkas,” he said with a smile. “I promise there’s not much for you to lie about here. This is a pretty simple plan. All you need to do is...”

Some time later, Tarkas and Scav returned to the common area, the latter’s arm draped across the former’s shoulders as he limped over to an empty bench and gingerly settled into a slump that suggested he was barely winning the war against gravity. The two men tried to be as discreet as possible so as not to disturb any goings on, but Scav was prepared to offer an apology for his abrupt exit once he had the chance. After all, his pride was no good to him if it got him killed, and he was a survivor first and foremost.

Archon's manor, Thessaloniki, Solun Region

The archon would offer a quiet chuckle, glancing sideways at Simon, then reached for a piece of bacon and took a bite. He would watch the orthos with his children with clear amusement.

"Unfortunately we are on a bit of a tight schedule... you were all brought here to hasten things, but you are free to leave as soon as you hear what this is about."

The witch watched the people around her with the same displeased expression, though her eyes lingered on Simon for a bit longer. As Scav and Tarkas returned, she would perk a delicate brow, inspecting the two men. She pursed her lips, then started toward them. Her voice lost some of the chill when she spoke.

"You are hurt... let me take care of that."

Her eyes would take a faint purple glow as she reached to touch Scav but she would stop mid-air, tensing visibly. On the other side of where Vosh now stood, they would hear the annoyed tone of the Idurati princess, as she made her way into the atrium.

"What in the name of Anpu is this!?"

Even as the words left her mouth, everyone present except maybe for Scav - even though even he could tell something was fundamentally wrong would feel a chill going down their spine, and the air felt colder.

The witch would look in the direction Cyrus and Ivana had gone, the purple glow in her eyes turning into flames that consumed her form, burning away all colour and revealing her true form as a daughter of House Morrigan, a true Banshee. When she spoke, her voice sounded otherworldly, though losing none of its appeal.

"Incoming."

The archon was quickly on his feet, growling more than speaking as he took a defensive stance.

"Protect the women!"

He moved in a blur, zipping past Tarkas and tackling two of the servant girls, carrying them away from the atrium. In the meantime, the dark-skinned man would duck under the table, while the twins would stand behind the beast that was now back in guard mode, growling deep.

Stunned by the burst of action, the princess would simply stand there for a moment before her eyes gave off a red glow and the head of a lioness appeared surrounding her own. When it faded away, her eyes were cat-like and blood-red. She hissed low, while her body assumed what was clearly a fighting stance.

The sense of dread only grew deeper as strange darkness started to fall over the atrium, spreading out from where the thief and her pursuer had gone.

It seems I was wrong to assume it would be smooth sailing from here...

With the people around him getting into position, or leaving the area altogether, Vosh aimed to memorize his would-be allies as fast as he could before all hell broke loose.  He sought cover on the far end of the atrium, away from the source of the danger, where he began the incantation for the Fire Bolt spell, ready to release it at the first sign of whatever it is that is assailing the mansion.

Scav tensed as the woman approached, apprehensive both of the magic she seemed ready to shunt into him and of the possibility that she might expose his ruse by trying to heal an injury that wasn’t there. There was nothing to do to avoid the former without seeming suspicious or at the very least boorish and ungrateful, so he began to think up explanations to smooth the latter should it come to pass.

A new voice suddenly cut through the building tension, incredulous and commanding at the same time as it asked a question that read more like a demand. A new tension replaced the old. Scav went white as a sheet as a silent yet discordant note rang on the edges of his awareness, his survival instincts seizing his body and driving him to take a wide berth around the orthros in putting it between himself and the direction the voice had come from. He did not move nearly as quickly as the archon but the effect was similar, and his back was soon to the far wall of the courtyard as he eyed potential escape routes and tried to assess what this new threat was.

For the first time he got a good look at the woman, perhaps of Egyptian or some sort of Mediterranean ancestry. A deep intensity burned in her crimson eyes, luckily not directed at him for the moment. As his mind resettled, the name Anpu tickled at the back of his mind before the spreading darkness engulfed it as thoroughly as it engulfed the exits he had scoped out.

“This damned helplessness again,” he said glumly, hoping in vain the wry quip would light the darkness spreading inside him as well.

Simon accepted the archon's words for now, a part of him doubting that he would just be able to walk away after the lengths that had been gone to in order to get him here, but certain that guest rights would keep him from coming to any physical harm or discomfort. So instead of objecting further, Simon picked up a piece of bacon to take another bite.

"Magic" The voice of the raven croaked in his head when he took his bite. Thin strands of mist began to leak from Simon's arms, face and neck.

Even as the archon sprang into action to collect the girls, Simon was moving himself. His fangs chomp down on the bacon, holding the piece of food and freeing his hand so that he could grab the lip of the table and push it up and then behind the man who had been hiding underneath it, forming a wall. It wouldn't be much, but the improvised barrier might help. His other hand drew the enchanted weapon at his side, the heavy combat knife sliding free without any real resistance, and then he vaulted over the overturned furniture and landed in a crouch, making as small a profile as he could while locking his gaze on the direction the witch now faced.

"Entryways. High points. Terrain." A reminder from the raven to make sure he saw just what he could use to his advantage. His mobility would be his most valuable asset in this upcoming fight -after all, most opponents didn't expect to have their target run up a wall and descend from above-. If it was a fight, at least.

Tarkas was very proud of himself for keeping a straight face as he support Scav on their walk into the courtyard. When the archon's companion approached and offered to heal Scav, Tarkas just froze not knowing what to do.  But then there was that horrible feeling and in an instant everything changed.

The only command he heard was to protect the women. And this was one order he would gladly get behind. He saw the archon take a couple of women to safety and moved to do the same. He should start with the closest for efficiency. He turned to the one who was about to heal Scav, ready to grab her... and reconsidered. Something about her made him realize she doesn't really need his help. Maybe it was the look of focus in her eyes... or maybe it was the way her hair seemed to float about her... or maybe it was the remnants of purple fire still burning on her body. It was probably the fire.

Tarkas glanced at the princess just in time to see her head surrounded by a silhouette of a lioness. She was probably fine for a while.

That left the last serving girl. Tarkas ran to her, reaching for his shield as he went. Leaning for just a moment he grabbed her legs just below the waist, lifted her up and ran towards the nearest exit, keeping the shield up to try and cover the girl.

As the people in the atrium sprang into action, the strange darkness spread wider. The air itself seemed to ripple for a brief moment before *something* started to form, gathering itself from every crack and opening. They could not see it so much as see a hole where things should be, in the rough shape of a towering multi-limbed humanoid.

One of the limbs would dart straight for the witch, attempting to impale her. She would deflect the blow with a wall of energy, jumping to the side just in time to avoid contact. She raised her voice, speaking loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"Don't let it touch your flesh!"

A second limb would aim for Vosh, despite the distance that separated the two. The extended emptiness of it would pass in front of Scav though seemingly ignoring the man in favour of its intended target.

Before it could reach the wizard, another limb would shoot out toward the twins, aiming for the boy. As the two-headed dog got in the way, it would split, forming a two-pronged spike that threatened both twins. The hound let out a sharp yell of pain.

Several additional tendrils would extend from the emptiness, driving themselves into the ground around it. The princess would quickly move on top of a table, her movements now more feline, a spectral tail behind her, while clawed paws were superimposed over her hands. Simon and Tarkas would feel the hair on the back of their neck rising as it tried to warn them of incoming danger.

Taking a moment to concentrate on the spell and on his surroundings turned out to be of much use to Vosh.  As he was finishing the somatic pattern, the scholar noticed the ever nearer tendril of what seemed to be darkness or a void of some kind approaching him rapidly and with malicious intent.  Not wasting a precious second further, he released a Fire Bolt aimed straight at it, this time making sure that the spell managed to take hold, before jumping out of the way to the side and trying to distance himself from its reach while also preparing to use the spell again if needed.

Realizing there was no escape, Scav finally unsheathed his shock batons and made ready to attack the tendril that had shot past him. Half of survival was avoiding danger when possible, but the other half was realizing when it was unavoidable and dimming the threat before it dimmed you. He knew once the priority threats were dealt with this whatever it was would come for him. He'd never let that happen.

Well that was... a shard of oblivion? The Void(tm)? Something awful. Oh, and it grew. Oh wonderful. Well, at least his blade was enchanted, since once typically needed magic to kill magic.

The thing was going after the kids. Even as the hound moved in the way Simon was dashing in that direction, his eyes darting across the beasts limbs as his own infused mana began to course through his body, giving him a few moments of clarity and making time seem to slow for him.

Support structures growing from the main limb. Creating tripods.

Suggests fragility. Limit to how high it can get, and how far it can reach unaided.

Potentially. Needs roots in the world to remain.

Limbs are just branches, can likely regrow if trimmed.

The hound began to scream, and the "arm" branched into two splits. Already jumping into the air, Simon mentally retorts, I'm not going to leave the kids just so I can go after the core. Witch is there anyway.

Bah. Fine. Be useless. Cut it at the joint.

And that's just where Simon's knife went, the enchanted steel blade gliding through the wrongness at the point just before its split, while he sailed above. It wasn't his cleanest jump of all time, but it got the job done, taking him a few meters above ground so that when he landed on the wall on the other side and stuck there using his free hand and the heels of his feet he was given a good view of how the rest of the battle progressed.

Ah, good. The mage knows how to throw about fire... wait. That was one of the lovers that got in a spat last night. Good to know he knows what he's doing, at least a little bit.

Oooo, that's some pretty fireworks... He's got a nice cane. You should take-

"Not now you idiot bird." The wampiri hisses out loud, a bit too occupied at the moment to deal with the corvid's kleptomania.

Tarkas half pushed, half threw the servant out of the atrium.

"Go! Get away from here!" He shouted as he turned to survey the area. The women still seemed composed and ready, but the children were in danger. And then there was this uneasy feeling, right after the tendrils hit the ground...

He rushed forward, but before he could get there, he saw the man in the chain shirt jumped to strike at the tendrils. That meant Tarkas could focus on defense. He stopped abruptly near the children, his sandals skidding a bit on the ground. He barely even noticed that his skin began to shimmer and twinkle in all the excitement.

"Don't worry, children, we'll make sure you're fine! But the ground might not be safe right, get on the nice doggy and let him carry you away!"

He helped the kids onto the two-headed hound, keeping his eyes on the ground, and pulled out his spear.

Simon's attack would force the Voidborn to pull its forked limb back, surprised that anything could actually harm it. The damage itself was not much, but it gave the two-headed dog the chance to attack as well, as payback for its earlier injury. Both sets of jaws locked around the unnatural limb, while the sting at the end of its tail darted to pierce the flesh if it could be called that. It then jumped back, positioning itself between the entity and the twins once more.

As Vosh unleashed the energy from his rod, he would quickly realise that things did not go according to plan. Perhaps it was the stored energy from his previous inability to perform, perhaps the universe decided it was time to balance the scales, or perhaps he was just lucky. Instead of the expected mote of fire, making a beeline for the monstrosity before him, five separate ones shot out, flaring toward the Voidborn attacking him. As the flames engulfed the entity, it would recoil in pain, letting out a rather canine yelp of pain, echoing that of the orthos earlier.

Thrashing in pain as it did, it would come into contact with one of Scav's batons, the energy in them arcing over its now partly visible form and sending it into a new round of spasms. The witch quickly turned her attention that way, and Scav would feel the baton overcharging, even through the protective gear he was wearing, before it unleashed the equivalent of a lightning bolt on the abomination before him.

The twins remained perfectly calm throughout the whole ordeal, even as Tarkas helped them get on the dog. When he started glowing, the little boy would touch his skin, his eyes glowing before he extended his hand toward the creature. A ray of light shot out from the boy's palm, wrapping around the monster's form and rendering it fully visible, even as it was half burning. It was then that he'd hear the archon's voice.

"Shield up!"

The moment Tarkas moved his shield in front of him, the archon would blur toward him, using the shield as a platform and bouncing off of it toward the voidborn, his own spear fully extended in hand. He slashed at the back of the creature's neck, before rolling to the ground and positioning himself on the opposite side of where the former guard stood. In the meantime, the orthos had moved out of the way, taking the twins out of harm.

Yes!  Hahahah!  YES!  MORE!

A wide grin appeared on Vosh's face as he produced a volley of fire bolts.  As they bombarded the target, he saw the creature before him clearly - a monstrosity unlike anything he has encountered before in his life, both in person and in the records of old.  There was only one way this was going to end, and he wanted to make sure he'd be there to witness it, to obtain knowledge of it.  The scholar made sure that no one stood between him and the aberration as he prepared his Fire Bolt again.  One by one, he fired multiple bolts out of the tip of his rod, each aimed directly at what he could only reasonably assume would be the central mass of his foe.  As the air around him grew in heat, and explosions rang from the impacts, Vosh could only laugh in excitement as a spectacle of fire unfolded before him.

Blow after blow hammered into the creature, which had clearly underestimated just how heavy resistance would be, and it was clearly taking a tole on the monster. The archon landed a hit on the being’s neck, but it didn't immediately collapse.

Void may be using body as a host.

Then the place it is being stored needs to be destroyed.

Head or heart most likely.

Very well then. Simon would start with the head. Seeing how the creature reeled and flailed as more and more of the void blasted from it body, Simon ran up the wall he'd been perched on, reached the ceiling, and then jumped down at an angle through a gap in the remnants of the creature's form, his knife plunging for the void being's exposed forehead as he restored his full weight and landed in a cloud of mists. The wampiri would land at an angle that kept the creature's central mass between him and the pyromaniac unloading bolt after bolt of flame into the poor monster. No sense in getting roasted himself, after all.

The baton made contact and Scav held it, hoping to at least stun the beast and make it vulnerable to those who could take it down for good. Suddenly, the weapon hummed to life in a way it never had in all Scav's years of using it, and electric energy surged through the tentacle, pulsing in horrible rhythm to the beast's writhing. Scav could feel the excess energy spreading out in a growing electric field that threatened to envelop him even beyond the protective measures he used against his own attacks. He'd never prepared for this level of energy, but he held fast all the same.

As he did so, Scav glanced around the arena, seeing the witch who'd walked in with the archon look his way intently, the clear source of the new jolt to his baton. That was his key to contributing to this beast's demise. Everything he'd seen, magic or not, would cease to exist if pressed hard enough in the right spots, in a way making friend and foe alike a survivor of something or another. Now that this beast was visible, he needed only to follow its appendages back to their source to find out where to press.

The baton's juice ran dry, the signal that Scav needed to move. As he ran toward the witch he made sure to remain aware of any attacks from tentacles that might come his way while sheathing one baton and drawing out the other. Were he to reach her side, he could activate the baton he'd just drawn out and throw it at the beast's core while she overcharged it again. Perhaps she could pump more energy through the baton once he was free of its deadly radius, but he'd have to reach her to find out.
