Mercator Projection and the USA
I havent been able to reach a solid statistic about this anywhere and anecdotal information is quite diverse. (It must also be diffrent from state to state.) How common is the America centered world map, compared to the Mercator Projection in the USA?
To Americans here, in elementary school, did you have an America centered map in your classroom or the one with America on the left?

It honestly depends on the office/ teacher, in my experience. A few of the teachers I had went out of their way to buy a more accurate world map. My US gov teacher, for example, made sure his room had a world-accurate map because he was also a world history teacher, but the geography and US history teachers just kept the disproportionate map because it really didn’t matter to their subject. Buuuut you may note that the default is “North America BIG” map. Because we can’t have nice, scientifically accurate things because American Exceptionalism, apparently.

Btw, to be clear, I'm not talking about maps with proportional continent size (Peters Projection), in this regard, the traditional Mercator Projection is also inappropriate. I'm talking about maps with America in the middle:

I had one of those in the old (30+ year old) elementary and middle schools that I went to, and in the textbooks for those ones. Newer schools or schools that have had a budget to update their materials (so not all of them, but my ~11 year old high school...) seem to have Mercator or other map models. At least in my Minnesota public school experience.

Yeah, thanks. This is what confuses me, while some Americans say they never saw them, some say they thought this was how all maps are until 15 years old etc.

news to me. seems pretty retarded to manipulate a world map for purposes of propaganda(which it seems to be). it's not like someone is unable to cross-reference with other maps.

I think I've seen a mix of both but the majority afaik had the American continents on the left. It's kind of clunky looking to split Asia in half. I think it's more common to find maps like that with the pre 1991 geopolitical lines.
