HoMM 1-7: why and what got you interested in Heroes?

Ok I can't make a Tavern of the Rising Sun, or Other Side of the Monitor, because participant is too unbeatable a little! But we get a knowledge from here.. Another this place can be right.. If not, moderator takes care of thread..

I spoke about fantasy in school, and I met dejavu is Heroes.. This world isn't reality.. Ok my bro showed me, and I bought computer again.. I played Heroes since RoE.. Unbelievable that stories are partly the same, what I spoke.. When I also mocked to spirit.. Ok I saw Heroes in dream sometimes.. Today I'm only mapmaker, and I played lesser Heroes.. It depends on map, so I still playing Heroes 3 and 4.. I don't like Heroes 5.. Would be Magician, Warrior and Master III in Heroes 5, what I planned already.. Ok so be MWM 1-2.. I'm not crazy, but to wonder chance! Ok then I stayed Heroes with.. But your story and experience is different and interesting! Can you tell us?

My parents were playing together, I got on board and it was soooo cool to play as a hero of fantasy world with amazing gameplay, sound and visuals all complementing each other so well.

Love at first sight for me and HoMM. Started with 2, continued with 3 plus expansions which made it even more enduring thanks to bigger maps, more towns, combo artifacts and random map generator.

4 is different but awesome in it's unique way. When it was new I thought it was so cool that it must be "The world's greatest achievement: Heroes IV"

Retroactively played the original Homm: A Strategic Quest and while very rough and basic it is still quite enjoyable. I find the most interesting that there were no spell points and you "memorise" spells.

I don't like Heroes 5 either no matter how much I tried... The game may still have its fans and that's fine. It's not for me.

Years went by and even this forum may not be as frequented as before but it's my hope that HoMM and love for it shall not end.

Your parents plays video games together DD? Wow I envy that!

When I was young, the best thing I knew was playing together with my parents and the best thing I knew to play was video games, sadly it was quite some battle to get my parents to play with me.

Though I don't think I enjoyed playing against each other, it was more cooperation.
Obviously I am making retroactive considerations, but I guess what I really liked about co-op was that for it to be successful, it forces the other player to go to my level. See the world from my perspective and adapt so to say. In a way connect with someone you love, and win or lose together, just having a good time doing something together, getting better at it, and learn to understand each other better.

Then again, I did manage to get my dad to play co-op doom 2 with me, and it wasn't what I had hoped for. It was probably also, like, 5 years to late, as it consisted of me clearing the levels (some years before that, I was afraid of the game, and only played it with god mode on and mainly watched monsters doing in-fights, ranking their levels of power in relation to each other) and him walking around aimlessly, shooting at stuff.

It can be argued that proper communication could have solved that hurdle, and in reality the roles were simply reversed compared to how I imagined it should have been, as I was the more experienced player. He should have been guided better, but I don't think I had the communication skills to do that, and I think it makes more sense for a better experience if the parent is the one guiding the child, while the child contributes in a meaningful and hopefully even essential manner for winning the game.

Or perhaps Doom 2 was a poor choice for a co-op game.

Well, they only play Heroes together but that's more than enough. Yeah, it makes for fun quality time with parents when all three of us are players. And one of my friends told me that he was playing H1 with his sister and their parents, fitting. Four players for four towns.

Hot-seat was something else, eh?

I saw heroes for the first time when I was on vacation with my sister. It was 2001. I saw the city being conquered with dragons; There were probably 5 types of dragons. And I was delighted with it!
Then my cousin tried to walk with heroes, but after buying eight, it was not known what to do because the movement was running out!
Later I sat down and discovered the hourglass ;o)))).
Then that you can build castles and buy.
The first castle was the Gate of the Elements, because it was the Blade of Armageddon.
But I quickly ran out of money ;O))) My sister advised me to build the Capitol ;o)) And so I sat and studied on my own, even all night long!
When I got home, I looked online to see what this game was all about. But somehow I forgot.
It was only in 2004 that I visited my sister and I remembered again ;o)))). I bought the Gold Edition in 2005 and have been playing regularly since then. The Gold Edition of Heroes IV has arrived next and, unfortunately, it's a pity when you look at it. This could be a great game
If only there were more creatures in cities. There are 47 of them + ballista. And the game has 72 + ballista + catapult. Just put them in the locks...
I like IV, but III is the game of all time - without comparison! 145 creatures + 4 war machines! As for V, I haven't played it, but from what I hear it's bad.
I and II are also cool and were achievements in their time.
But III is undoubtedly number 1. I hope that eventually one will be better than III. But it's very difficult!

Personally, for me it's all the symbolism and exploration within a turn-based sandbox full of mythological & spiritual archetypes: Might & Magic conceptually extrapolated into a whole pantheon of contrasting ideologies, with which to create adventures infinitus
~ old thread

It all started at a computer games store when i was young: they had a few computers set up where you could demo some games, and i couldnt stop playing heroes 1. Then the box art sold me. Box art was so important back in the day.  Heroes 2 was better in every way: it hooked me onto the franchise for life, and still feels the most magical to me.  The art style of 3 took some adjustment to acclimate to but eventually it grew on me, and now its my favorite game in the series.  I loved 4 initially and still think it has the best soundtrack, but find it hard to go back to. I used to fall asleep listening to the homm soundtracks.  5 is pretty good too imo, especially the town screens!  For me the order of greatness goes 3 > 5 > 2 > 4 > 1. 6 and 7 showed promise in development but ended up falling flat on their faces.

I am so jealous of those of you who got to play heroes with your parents. That would be a dream come true for me!  I only ever got my younger sister to play with me, and those memories are some of my favorite.  Hot-seat was the best!  I just wish i could get her or my parents to join me now; heroes 3 and 5 with mods are better than ever before  Thank you so much modders!

I came across HoMM1 back then in '95 and I loved it the moment I saw it. I didn't even know about the Might and Magic series and I haven't played that until today.

What I liked about HoMM1 - aside from the good atmosphere - was the high difficulty and capable AI. This applies to all up to the third part of the game. I know, people are complaining about the stupid AI, but I don't think so. Ofcourse I can beat it however I want to now, but that wasn't the case in the beginning. I mean, it would be embarrassing if I couldn't beat the AI after studying it for more than 20 years

The reason I still occasionallly play HoMM1 today is
- well designed maps
- good AI
- simple rules resulting in relatively short games.
- digging for ultimate artifacts. They are super OP.
- poorly balanced factions. If I'm looking for a challenge, I pick Knights and if I'm lazy I pick Warlocks.
- There are dragons. Real dragons, not those wimpy green and yellow, red, blue whatever dragons. Having a single dragon means game over in HoMM1.
- most importantly, the magic system, that is different from later versions. There is no mana and you are forced to re-learn spells after using them. This makes spells a precious resource that must be used sparingly. In exchange for the trouble, magic is very strong.

I bought HoMM2 the day it was released, and I had mixed feelings about it. I loved the new factions. I found the secondary skill system interesting but also frustrating. There are a lot of maps with HoMM2, but few of them are good.

The reasons I still play HoMM2 today are:
- Titans. I love them
- In my opinion, HoMM2 has the best art of all Heroes games. I mean, a Phoenix is supposed to be beautiful. And they truly are, completely unlike these fire chickens in HoMM3. Also, undead are super cool. I was very disappointed when I saw the undead faction in HoMM3.

HoMM3 - overall I consider it the best part of the series. It keeps most of the good points of the first two parts, and eliminates some frustrating stuff, like your main hero never being offered wisdom. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that magic heroes are so underwhelming. While the title of the first two parts reads "Heroes of [Might and Magic]", Part three is "[Heroes of Might] and Magic". Also, my lovely ultimate artifacts were replaced by some useless beaker that gives me extra money (at a time when I don't need it anymore).

The reasons I still play Homm3 today are:
- the overall high quality of the game.
- high replayability due to random maps.
- a HD mod that is just amazing.

HoMM4, again, was bought on the release date. It was the biggest disappointment ever, and the only game I ever brought back to the shop. 20 years and 10 generations of PCs later, now there are playable versions of the game and I have one. But it really is a pity. They obviously put a lot of thought into it and solved most of the problems of HoMM3, while keeping the original look and feel. Even though they overdid it a bit with the changes, it would still be a good game, but the completely incapable AI ruins it all. It is fun to play it for a while, but there is not much replay value.

The reason I play HoMM4 today is:
- due to the massive performance issues, I was never able to finish a single game in the past. So just for a change, I can play it a bit.

HoMM5 - I played it for about an hour and then uninstalled it. I don't remember why I disliked it so much. It happens in life: Two people don't like each other from the moment they meet and they never become friends. I didn't even check out the later sequels.

I remember playing Homm2 with friends back in the day, and whereas we really liked it, but I expect it was the release of Homm3 that really pushed our friends to the new installment and we basically never looked back. At the time, Homm3 was seemed like a superior game, as suddenly all creatures could be upgraded and there were even more towns to choose than before. We really played a lot of hot seat, usually teaming up against the AI. We could go to out homes, eat, and then come back where we left at. Good times, good times.

Then the release of Homm4 also came around. We also enjoyed it quite a bit, however it was not as a big hit as Homm3 was, as many things felt changed. There were also less factions to choose from. Also, one reason why the time with Homm4 didn't last very long were the maps was the lack of map selection. There weren't that many suitable maps for hot seat gaming.

Homm5 I remember playing mostly solo, and I really remember liking the game when I first played it. Also really enjoyed the last expansion of the game, which added the upgrade choices. Sadly, one could really see that it was an afterthought, as not some upgrades felt much more suitable than others.

I've revisited both Homm4 and Homm5 many times over the years, but the gaming experience has not felt as timeless as Homm3. Around ten year ago I discovered that Homm3 wasn't something only I've found as a really good game, but there were a whole community still playing the game. After discovering and trying out Hota, I've not really looked back. Maybe I give Homm5 another chance as time passes, maybe, but I'm not planning to revisit Homm4, unless something really spectacular happens to the game.

My dad was big into it with his college pals - not *before* I was born, but pretty close to it. When we first emigrated to the U.S. it was one of the first things I saw him doing on our new computer - maybe the first time I saw any such thing as a video game, Period.

Of course, when I tried playing it at that age I mostly Failed. Big time. Campaign mode by definition scared me because I thought every scenario had a time limit, and it took months of grinding away at the first map of Single Scenario (All For One, I think?) before I got comfortable with it.

I kept periodically revisiting the game through my middle and high school years, but it wasn't until late undergrad that I made a serious attempt to play everything (starting from I) and get down as much of the lore as I could. Funny thing, after going through I and II, III's campaigns seemed downright easy (I distinctly remember my dad saying that the Gem campaign in Shadow of Death had a deliberately unbeatable opponent; I dunno what he was on, I crushed 'em pretty easy.)

The lines between fiction and reality can sometimes blur, especially in immersive worlds like those in Heroes of Might and Magic. It's interesting that you experienced a feeling of deja vu while playing the game.
