Power Metal

Every ppl here seems to like fantasy so probably there are a lot of ppl that like power metal so, what are your fave bands, what was the last album you bought?
For now, my fave power mteal band is Rhapsody, I have almost all of their albums(I don't have the first one) and I bought the limeted edition of their lateste album. Besides "Power of the Dragonflame-limited edition" the last albums  got are Night at the Opera of Blind Guardians and the lastest release of Hammerfall (can't remember the name, I got it recently)

I used to be into power metal, but a lot of it is pretty cheesy. I still like Blind Guardian a lot though.

Opeth is my favorite band.  I also like Iced Earth, Borknagar, Cradle of Filth, and others.

I don't like Hammerfall, and Rhapsody gets on my nerves pretty quick.

I think the poster draws a correlation between fantasy and power metal because most power metal tends to have a fantasy theme to the lyrics. If anyone has to ask why we'd like power metal, they don't know what power metal is.

Well... I can at least say power metal is synonym to hero metal and balls-cut-off metal .

I love power metal, especially some of the pioneers of the genre, its all a bit copycatish now. Best exponents of it IMO are Stratovarius, Jag Panzer, Sentenced, Gamma Ray, etc u get the drill. Blind guardian are also great, real stalwarts of that type of metal. Some good new stuff coming out too, check out Engines new album (Ray Alder of Fates Warning solo project). Anyway if its metal its good, could talk for hours about it.

Helloween rule!!! (or used to hehe)

power metal

there seems to be a lot of different definitions of "power metal" and I think the term has lost it's meaning lately.

Helloween, Jag Panzer, Gamma Ray, and Stratovarious may have a lot in common, but bands like Iced Earth, Manowar, or Blind Guardian are also classified as Power Metal by some people despite being drastically different from each other and from the first four bands I mentioned.

I really don't like to categorize things anymore, and it seems that lately, a lot of people label anything that doesn't use growly type vocals as power metal.

*shrug*

But hey, there's some good stuff out there.

I saw Jag Panzer live once... I have to wonder... they say incredibly cheesy stuff on stage. I wonder if it sounds cheesy because of cultural differences or something. Same thing with Blind Guardian. On Tokyo Tales, Hansi says some of the most incredibly stupid sounding things between songs.

anyway, I'm babbling and very tired. I should stop typing now.

Hmmm rogue I guess you are right,
You could also call bands like Pantera, oR System of a down power metal, because they are "powerful metal". I guess I was looking at the melodic side of power metal, then you go off into other tangents "melodic power metal", "symphonic power metal" symphonic metal" etc etc. I guess when I think of power metal, I think of fast drumming, melodic tunes, twin leads, soaring vocals, and big cheesy choruses, yes like Jag Panzer and Stratovarius are good at.

But I just enjoy it anyway, if its metal, its all good.

I've always thought Iced Earth, Manowar and Blind Guardian are like the definition of power metal... I've taken Stratovarius more like just a heavy band (btw they're Finnish - go Finland! ). But I'm no expert at these.

I wouldn't call Sentenced, Pantera or System Of A Down power metal just because they're powerful metal (hey everybody, Sentenced is Finnish too!). There are still certain genres, but is there someone here to know for sure which band is of which genre?

There is my point precisely. I wouldnt call Pantera or system power metal. I would call Sentenced, Stratovarius etc. melodic power metal, but it is all peoples perception. Is Power metal all about 6 ft broadswords, vikings, rescuing virgins, knee high ug boots etc? I would call cradle of filth black metal, others would call it heavy goth . I would call Queensryche prog rock, others would call it hard rock, or even rock. My point is, its all in peoples perception. German band Rage are a great example, they could be heavy metal, power metal, sometimes even speed or melodic thrash. Who cares about genres, just enjoy METAL!!
