Cash prizes

Hey I have been recieving emails between Ves and Flammingo, about cash prizes. I would like to make a suggestion. Get rid of the cash prizes, plz it just adds more complication. I know money attracts more people but I think it attracts the wrong type of people. You get a bunch of people that are here to win the cash at any cost. Not the type of people that are just here to have fun. If you don't want to play the game just for the fun of it, than you shouldn't be in this tournment. Those are my 2 cents on this subject.

If you disagree with that type of thinking than look at the emails between Ves and Flammi. Those emails are another reason for not having cash prizes.
Plz remove the cash prizes, keep the money, Ves! I wouldn't accept your cash anyways for doing something that I love so much

Now JEX is da MAN!!! :)

I agree 100%.  No need for cash prizes... I enjoy every aspect of TOH and I personally am happy with the prestige and medals by my name for rewards. Keep the focus on the fun and HONOR and not the greed to win.

I have to agree wtih both Jinxer and Jex.  I play heroes for fun, cash rewards just tarnish the enjoyable competition and take the honor out of TOH.

i agree also, cash prizes could bring the wrong type of players and attitudes who will win `at all costs'.  I mean...it would be nice to win $ for playing a game i love. But isn't just playing the game worth it? It is too me.

gimme da cash

Ive long considered that... but cash gives out an extra incentive.  I think that 'cutthroat' type players will still play for the medal and awards, though the cash is an extra incentive.  Originally they were to be 'gift certificates', but with the massive international community it wasnt possible.  I pump about $1000 a year into TOH, initially was a big deal but right now I do not mind spending money on the prizes (we're looking at about $250 or so a year in prize cost).  Just imagine if it was a PGL with a $50,000 cash prize!!! Then the honor medallists may consider cheating here and there...  No, it will always remain the same, whether cash is involved or not, that some player will play just to win at all costs. It was the tournament rankings setup/system/medals that got TOH so addictive and popular in the first place.
I try to vary the form, for example Zud, JB, and Greystole will all get a copy of heroesIV when its released for their MVP medals.

Donation Support

I think that if there is going to be cash prizes, then maybe it should be discussed about a donation program.  Just think if every member of TOH donated $1.00  Then we could have very nice cash prizes and show our appriciation for a wonderful and enjoyable tournament.
I know Vesuvius and he will trash the donation idea But thousands of people enjoy TOH every day $1.00 is well worth all the great fun and adventure..  Just some thoughts.

Having cash prizes could be good if the right type of players are involved in tournaments. But in this case, NO cash please.
But if there is going to be cash, than make it like 10000$, but there is a risk of loosing your own computer if you suffer a loss, crush the comp. he is guilty for my loss . Well just an idea.... Nah, not a good one ayyyy.
I really think that cash shouldn't be involved.

Have fun guys...

Cash Prizes

Well Cash prizes have always been a key part of regular TOH tounraments, I weighed the decision very carefully before not going with them in Crossroads.  For the reason I did not was

1) New tournament, not everyone like the style of maps in Crossroads
2) A Majority of the tournaments have cash prizes and this was intended to be a "FUN" tournament, but for TOH points as the reward.
3) I had only 2 cases of disputes in 120 games played one was due to a player submitting a win against someone who was not even in the Crossroads Tourny and the second one was resolved by completing the game.

I do not believe that the 1.7% dispute rate would have been this low in the tournament if cash was involved. That is my personal opinion only about Crossroads, not TOH tournaments in general such as Speed deamon and addicts etc. which is its mainstay of playing numerous games in difficult conditions.

some thoughts

When you are playing in sub-tournament and win it, it will be more pleasure to receive something from it in real life. for example: to say to your girlfriend: "Dear, this game, that you are hating, gives us ....." is it not fun?
if in all tournaments will be licensed copy of homm4 it will be more fun, then cash prizes. I'm using a pirate copy of homm3 from beginning, i receive it before it officially appears in american shops. but its not because i like pirates industry, just because i havent enough money(could you compare 1,5$ and 40??) to buy it and if i will wait official release i need to wait few months. it will be fun if prize in tournament was even copy of homm3 )

but is it really matters if this cash prizes Ves not paying? it is talks on free space.

P.S. for my cash sertificate for last season addict(last prize that he payed, all others he decline ) ) i didnt receive money, cause its not an easy way to receive money from check in our country. I'll try on days(i received it about year ago) and i hope Ves wouldnt close it,before i can do it.

Agree to jex,jinxer and krev

The fact kreszantas has given proves that prize is not a good idea.
We come here for fun ,respect and friendship ,not for the prize or other similar things.Although I came here not long ,I could feel the crisis of TOH.So many cheating ,quitting and other dirty things have hurt the real player 's heart ( Pandora with her husband for example). The most emergent case here is to clean our playing environment, and rebuild the real spirit of our TOH.
Let's think about it over carefully instead of blindly expanding.

I think we don't need cash in TOH. And honestly I don't understand the argument that cash gives more incentive to play in the tournaments. Do you really want in a tournament somebody who is there ONLY for the cash? I don't think so.

Also, cash is unfair. $100 are nothing to one, and a fortune to another. The medal is the same to all!

Let this game be for HONOR, not money.

Cash Prizes $$$

I have been involved in many martial arts tournaments myself and i can understand the reasoning behind Ves's desicion. In all blackbelt competition or atleast most across America there is a cash prize awarded . Not only as an icentive to get more players involved but also to keep top players interested. Will there be problems with nare-do-wells ? sure  But this is only a part of the equation. So please everyone , lets focus on the positive influences of the awards and let the chips fall where they may.                                                                                 ps.  Hang in there Ves. and thanks for the wonderful site of TOH

ESPN coverage?

I say increase the cash prize and have a twice annual hotseat tourney at a hotel in phoenix that Vesuvius reserves.

About 10 computers all loaded with heroes and Rob and Melissa moderate.

Admission to play is $100.00 and you must pay your way there and for your lodging. It last 3 days in elimation style and the winner gets $5000.00.

An event like this would attract sponsorship from 3do and a software chain and a gaming magazine so Rob would make a profit for all his work.

I am sure people scoffed at the idea of big MtG tourneys saying "No way people will travel from all over the world to play this.". But they did and it became so big the championships are now televised on ESPN.

I can just imagine Dan Patrick and Stuart Scott on this topic. And then "Booyah, brothuh drops the implosion!!"

OK maybe not, but it's a good idea. BTW it is a good idea to tell the Russian players to leave their floppy disks at home. :-)

-Mocara

P.S. I do agree that online money encourages people to cheat. At the same time these games are held under greater observation so it may provide a better chance of catching already unscrupulous players that might have went unnoticed.

Nice Post Mo

I haveta agree with you on this one. That would be alot of fun plus you would not haveta worry about cheaters. But as it is now the cash prizes won over the internet should be taken out cause moderation is too difficult. Let the current prize money stock pile for some type of an event like Mo discussed

Great ideas by mo and jinxer

To first confront the original topic.  Prizes are fine.  I have never one any nor do i plan to but it makes it a little fun.  And i do agree with flamingo it would be fun to have a physical reward for your play.  But how bout a trouphy Ves?  $70 is slightly insignifcant when you factor in the time spent on the comp and away from work.  I think some little trinquet would be cool.

On another matter Jinxer has an intresting point.  I do think Ves should get a little help funding and maybe some reperations although he asked for none.  I think 1 dolar again is not worth the hassle.  Too much to keep track of for a small fee for both sides.  I would leave it open and then the players that use it all the time and really love it like me would donate a little more.  And then other players that are not on here 40 hrs a week could pay what they wanted.  I would not mind giving up a little money at all for it.

Mo's idea is truely intriging and perplexing.  It is not that hard to do since i have been to chess tournemnts across the country.  Perhaps a little tougher for our European counterparts.  Some advice for that though.  No offence to the fine state of arizona but i could think of someother places to spend my vacations.  How bout a place with strong atractions already.  That way you could come up with more reasons besides just going to play heroes.  I think this should be a seperate thread all together.  See if you could make it work ves.  It would be wierd meeting people you play with online 3 times a week face to face.  And that would be the ultimate cheater free tournement.
Great Idea

Hotseat Tournamnet

I think that hotseat tournament is a great idea. Sure some people will not be able to make it to Arizona but that is life, not everything is possible. I myself would gladly travel 1000's of kilometers to play with the best players from North America, and who knows maybe some Europeans and Aussies will show up too
And if Antal thinks he is the greatest player int he world, then maybe his friends will sponsor him and he can compete too NO disrespect intended.
I have grown weary of TOH recently exactly for the sane reasons CHN_dragon mentioned. Too much cheating, quitting and allegations, trying to avoid a loss and so on.
I like the competitive aspect of TOH  and I don't play for "fun" anymore, but I don't mind losing. Sure i would like to win but loss is not the end of the world. I have never asked anyone to play a subtournament game not for TOH. Sure i am matched up with people of all ranks and a win is equal a ZERO points and loss over 50. But so what? My opponent deserves a chance to strip me off those points and if the game was stacked in his favor because of luck? So what, some games the luck was on my side and we should all accept it both ways. I guess i got completely off topic, it is just one of few things that bother me in TOH, high ranked players pressuring newbies for non-TOH matches in subtournaments or weaseling out from lost games to save their precious points
Sorry about the rant, I stil like the hotseat tournament immensely. I think competing in cheating free tournament would be worth my time and money.

Heroes Grandmaster finals LAN

The hotseat idea initially was brought to my attention by SirAlkis, a great homm2 heroes player.  He would imagine chess-tournament style arenas with a large audience watching players' every moves....but of course this isnt realistic.  Actually, it could be, if 3do was a little better on their fan support and sponsorship.  But as we know, their company idealism is opposite that, unlike nearly every other PC game distributor.

If we did a hotseat thing, hosting it wouldnt be a problem, anywhere in the states.  But as mocara was saying, $5000 prize etc... whos gonna pay for that?   TOH/heroes has become an addiction hobby for me, so if I did have a million dollars in my hands I would probably hold large finals with all expense paid for travel and such (if I had a million!)

Also, I work as a dentist 6 days a week, so my time is dedicated to work, and any trips would be out of the question for me.   With me and Melissa getting married in June, and her moving here, my time for heroes gaming (not TOH) would be severely limited.   Also, 3do requested, as the TOH host, that they would prefer that I do not participate in my tournaments in future homm4.

Ves
I think we understand this would be a huge undertaking so take your time adjusting to your new life.  Perhaps this would be a good thing for the championship of the first season of heroes 4.  Just somthing to consider.  Use that time to try to hammer 3do into sponsering it.  I think it is a really great idea.
