library of enlightenment

After this much experience, I visited Library with a level3 main last week in a game. The swamp on the way to it eating my two turns was the bad side of the story.
Having a ballista without artillary skill, I sometimes blind some last wondering creature standing in a battle to resurrect my armies... end of the turn, ballista shots and wakes them up.
And another one happening often and hurt me a lot is; a scout using the mana vortex while my ultra spell power low knowledge warlock is planning to attack opponent that week...

Forgetting rules :(

I just finished a game on SD3 vs Montegoma, for division.

I was clearly ahead, had 2 dungeon towns with drags in them both end week 3, and had by a little luck vansihed his main.
My main had Town portal, so I wasnt afraid to get caught, just hanging back week 3, so I could finish him off week 4.

But I did send a scout into his area, with a single dragon fly, well Monte proceeds to attack the fly with some gogs and a cent. I thought hell, my scout has done what he came for, so a magic arrow and retreat.

Then I realised we played with no H&R, and by the rules laid down in the campaign I had commited H&R. Luckily it wasnt important to the game, and Monte took it honorable, when I apologised many times, we agreed that I should not rebuy the hero.

But damn I felt stupid, to forget campaign rules, specially when in wining position. Guess thats why I prefer no rules, I cant remember from my head to toe

silly mistakes

1st time i was playing heroes, i build behemoths week 1 and march stright to my opponents town reaching him in middle of week 2. only to be killed by the towers.

Forgetting to buy spell books.

Being unable to buy ships because of gross miscalculation of wood.

Losing my main hero by forgetting to take off shackles.

And probably commited all the above mistakes at least once.

mistakes

hmm  trading in a relic is pretty bad(except if its the black orb and you both are castles)...but the mistakes i make are ones of forgetting to buy a spell book or taking treasures for exp when a  scout picks them up(rare one)I also seem to underestimating the power of a pack of arch magi sometimes.

hehe Rychen

Silly Rychen, if you were too embarrased to tell me why would you post that here?  You shoulda said "Crikey, i sacked my quest art!"  I woulda reloaded for sure, lol

Ive done that plenty, i used to always sack my quest arts - and also in playing SoD games i used to forget an art was a piece of a combo and sack it, only to be real mad at myself later  Actually i never got mad at myself, Jb got mad at me, cuz i usually did that in games allied with him

Another fun one I've done lots, is trying to upgrade a creature when i've not yet built the creature upgrade, and then i dismiss the stack for no good reason, lol

I think the best one I did tho, was in season 1 after playing maybe 30 games in a row as necro - I got dungeon to start and was using Alamar.  Well, since i was so used to necro - and animate not requiring earth to be permanent that i overlooked the fact that my Alamar would need earth for his ressurect to be true!  I attacked a strong group of level 7's thinking i'd have no trouble with ressurect, and after winning the battle was devastated to see my poor hero was gone lol

I have topped you all

Just a few days ago I attacked some wandering monsters with 6 arc angels.

I meant to hit pause but instead clicked retreat.

If that wasn't bad enough I clicked yes really quick when it said "are you sure".

I really don't know what the hell I was thinking.

hero is missing in tavern

Once,my main hero was defeated in battle with monster
and retreated.

it was day 7.

and, I couldn't hire him (not having 2,500 gold)
I forgot it was day 7.
So, i was to hire him next day.
Then, week changed, and he was missing in tavern.

in another case. I was deadly looking forward
to scholar hero. (or..any important spell hero. i can't re
member exactly)
and, fortunately.. on day 1,i could find him in my tavern.
(In that case, he looks like the Messiah!!)
i was waiting my opponent'turn finishing.
,. during his turn my opponent attacked my scout hero.
(i couldn't win, but i could retreat after couple of
spell casting....I grinned..)
then.. my turn came,
I could see that retreated hero was there instead of
the Messiah.

Retreat and not see that guy again

Yes, retreating a scout hero just to preserve a lousy artifact then the main hero you wanted is no longer in the tavern... I really don't like that! I've had it happen too many times.

Diplomacy

I have learned a lot about whether or not creatures will join you. I played a game on hg2 on wich diplomacy is very important and so i got exp dip. I always try to get scouts down to see what creatures are waiting there. I was rampart that game and boy was i happy to see several Gold Dragons just waiting to join me And so somewhere early week 2 i got to the underground to see if they would join. i had exp earth and the book of earth magic so i could use visions to see if they would like to join me. And yes they would join me! So the next turn i attacked the Golds and.... they killed my 2 golds What happend?

I had not yet bought all my creatures from the castle so the 2 golds i had upgraded early that week were my only creatures avaliable. I figured they would be strong enough to defeat anything down there since i also had the earth book. Also did i have some good arties that boost up my prim skills. But since this was my main hero and i could not give 1 gold to another hero since there was none around i was forced to take off my arties in order to make sure my opp would not see my prim skills. So there is my problem. I was so happy they would join i didnīt put my arts back on Now i wasnīt strong enough to have them join me. So in stead of joining they attacked me LOL.

The small things you forget can get you killed.

takin off arties

lol, serves ya right, Why not let opponent see your stats, I never bother with hiding my stats from opponent, if they are that good, he will be scared to death anyway and if they suck, I want my opponent to come kill me and take me out of my misery

show your stats?

I don't think it is a good idea to show your stats, but then again, you have 10x (20x?) more experience then i have. Maybe you get tired of it some day
The reason i don't show my stats is to make my opp attack me. If they know your stats and know they would lose because of that they will do anything to get the win they want. i.e. if they have exp logs and exp pathfinding you can never catch up with them and they will keep running from you untill they think the odds of winning the game are equal. Ofcourse there are always fly, dim door, gloves, boots etc. but they are not always avaliable (btw, your opp has just as much chance of getting them, that usually happens to me). And that way it will be a running game and that is not what logs and pathfinding are for if you ask me. But that's not what this threat is about so i will not talk about that anymore

Sacrificing Artifacts

Did this one yesterday... Pendant of Courage and Pendant of FOrgetfulness appear so similar- sacrificed the wrong one, then wondered the whole battle why I wasn't getting any morale or luck.

As for showing stats... I endevour to hide my main heroes stats the whole game, in fact I try to keep my main hero hidden all game until the very end. Otherwise they might counter him. If for instance I have Adela, then they might choose fire magic for their hero if they have the curse spell, or maybe if I have a 4th level hero like Deemer, then they make sure to get Resistance, things like that I prefer to avoid. Or even if I have a might hero or magic hero, then they might guess if I have good spells or not. I also like the sheer surprise when I finally ambush them with my hero who they though was only a scout.

nasty mistake

hate this!!
was playing a game where i was running around on auto with a large group of lvl 7's trying to get a few lvls quick for expert dip. then played another game and got a couple of lvl 7's from camps, chain them to my main and hit a dusa store. bang! still on auto from other day!! lost both and the heroe i wanted for my main of course i coulda lost those troops even if i'd been in control, but went back to store next day and there was only 1 dusa left in it!! i just have this sneaking suspicion i woulda lost nothing in there

This is how I learned to use quick combat carefully.  The map is houglass 1 updated and I`m underground with my main carrying 3 green dragons in week 2.  I`m full of mana (160) and I have diplomacy and so I`m trying to join as much troops as I can.  The first 15 fights are against either useless groups or easy groups to kill.  Then I face several giants that are set to never join.  I remove quick combat to do the fight manually just in case there are titans in there.  I have ressurect true and I want to make sure I won`t lose any dragons.  So there I am fighting 4 titans and 5 giants which isn`t a problem, all I have to do is ressurect right?   WRONG!  Stupid quick combat had use all my mana points for the easy fights I had done up to this point.  So I had to flee combat and that way I lost 3 dragons.
