Welll.I am from the netherlands and you can do pretty much everything here..If it's not a crime like stealing murdering bla bla..I guess that goes for every country

The thing I don't find so good is the police here..instead of doing somethign usefull they concentrate on traffic.
Parking ticket speed tickets you name it..but when someone burglered your home you have to wait an hour or more for them to finally come.

We have a shortage of police and I think the priorities are a bit weird. And furthermore the shortage of jail cells is also a big problem..punishments are often way too lenient ..but that's just my opinion. We don't have the death penalty and I think that's a good thing because what's better punishment than letting them rot the rest of their lives alone in a cel ?

What I miss in the Netherlands are mountains..everything is flat.
What I really love is the sea and seafood of course.
My experience with dutch people is that they are very nice and reasonable but that's just my experience in general.

I think the infrastructure here belongs to one of the best in Europe and atleast people here drive "decent" unlike the balkan lands  *winks at Conn and Lith*

If you wanna go shopping here it's rather expensive. And it seesm to me that it got more expensive since the euro..but that could be my mind playing tricks on me maybe?

Some things in Dutch:

Goeie morgen = good morning
Goeie middag = good afternoon
Goeie avond = good evening

bla bla bla..I hope you guys break your tongues on those

well I can't think of anything else right now..so if any of you dutchies want to add something..feel free

About Australia...

Well, I can give you something about my country, Australia.

Australia:
- was settled by Aborigines many thousands of years ago. Today we still have a handful of Aboriginal Australians on our land, but most have been mercilessly wiped out in the 19th Century.
- The first European settlement occurred in January 26, 1788. Today we celebrate this landing in a day known as Australia Day.
- Australia became independent from Great Britain in January 1, 1901.
- Australia is the smallest continent in the world and the largest country in the Pacific (6th largest in the world).
- We have a population of about 19 million. Most Australians live on the Pacific Coastline.
- Most of Australia is dry, arid desert (about 80% or so).

About Australian life:
- Our human rights levels have been somewhat violated by our treatment of asylum seekers, but other than that we are very racial tolerant (we support multiculturalism in this country and hold a lot of festivals on this theme) We are also religiously demoratic.
- We are ruled by a conservative democratic government (under Prime Minister John Howard)
- There is no death penalty in Australia (it has been removed years ago). The worst sentence is life imprisonment.
- Some people say that Australia is a country filled with slang-talking, blond haired, blue eyes, singlet wearing, beer-drinking and surf/sport-loving people. Wrong. Besides these people we also have various Europeans, Anglos, Arabs, East Asians (my kind), Indians, Africans, Americans, Polynesians and Melanesians. Pretty diverse, eh?
- We have a very diverse native flora and fauna. Many have been wiped out but now we are in the process of restoring what we have left.

Some Australian slang and words:

G'day! - Good day
Bush - the forest
Barbie- Barbecue
Football - When Australians mean 'football' they mean Rugby League or Aussie Rules Football (if in Victoria). What the world calls 'football' is what we call 'soccer'.
Fair Dinkum - Very True
Bloke - a nice guy

Informative enough?

well continuing the theme of tounge in cheek

Britain, the land of asylum heaven, land of GM foods, Mad cow disease, Foot and mouth and the target for any handouts whether to incoming refugees or former colonies.

Rights, well we have freedom of speech as long as we are quiet about it, freedom of religion as long as we don't force it on others and the right to be damn rubbish at every sport we have ever had a hand in inventing. We have the right to be dragged into conflicts by America all the time and watch them blow us up and then claim all the glory.

We don't execute people here, unless it's for the henious crime of rebelling against the monarch or simply suggesting they may not exactly fit into a Modern Democracy. We supposedly live in a democracy, where the Government can take no notice of you whatsoever and claim they are defending your rights.

Words? Well there's Yank for the gullable fools (sorry American cousins), Frog for the French, Chips for french fries and Crisps for those things you call chips. OH AND FOOTBALL YOU KNOW A GAME WHERE THE BALL ACTUALLY TOUCHES THE FOOT NOT REPEAT NOT SOCCER!

We don't have the right to tell anyone else what to do anymore, can't bully Americans like we used too and we can no longer invade europe every few years to please the people with some raping and pillaging! for some reason the world objected to this.

Well that's Britain, land of the free and home of the brave, see you soon when you come over here when we impress you with buildings older than your country and a History longer than your bank balance!

Damn it you mean serious?

Oh allright

Britain is my home and the land I was born in. We live under a democracy, with the strange add on of a Monarchy, that whilst diluted with foreign blood is the oldest continual monarchy in Europe.

We have an awful lot of history and have absorbed the ethnic groups of most of Europe in our time. We were involved in Both world wars from the begining and have fought always to maintain a balance of power in Europe. We built the world's largest and most succesfull empire and also managed it the best of the European nations.

Rights are something of a problem here. We have no set constitution, but do have the right to free speech and Religion, but not to bear arms. We don't execute people here, and generally are quite lax in laws.

Words I have done, though we DO NOT speak like dick van dyke in mary poppins nor like Michael caine.

What is the penatly for crimes (jail, death)
What government you are in and what it is like
some words from your laungage
what rights you DONT have

We got freedom of speech - but you can be sued if what you are telling is a lie, or can't be proven - especially for media guys - journalists. Religion is free... (although most of us by passport are Orthodox christians).

Democratic government - we got primer minister, cabinet, and president. Neither of them have absolute power.

Some words - "Rakia" - which is the bulgarian word for brandy.

Are laws are based on the roman law, not common law as UK (am I right?) and USA...  Although i'm not expert...

BTW - I'm living in USA from nearly 3 years - and I can tell - that you guys (and sadly... me) with this new president will have a lot of freedom being taken away....

9/11 was just excuse for Bush going around, and trying to shut the mouth of everyone...

And why the f*uck we are getting all this c*rap about kidnapped children - when first annualy about 300-400 kidnappings are something normal for such big country, and second - the kidnappings were decreasing over the years - I'm sure MEDIA just have to show something to people - to make them cry about things&stuff which is really not so important - and the same time - HIDE the big problems - future attacks on IRAQ, and so... It all started about March-April..... Really it's not that kidnappings in USA, and in any other countries is something new...?

About rights, we have the usual ones, very like usa.
Government, we can call it a democracy.
PORTUGUESE WORDS
Olá-Hi
Amo-te-I love you (very usefull if you want to go to bed with some portuguese chick)
Vai-te foder-Some very rude words I don'e dare to translate
About what we can't do, we can't burn chuches (damm) and we can't have sex on graveyards(double damm)
Besides that is a very quite and peacefull country.

Excellent thread topic!

I take it as you are kidding and want the rest of the world to know that we are NOT taught "Germany is barbaric and most are Nazi and that the Russians are a bunch of Nuke-Wielding communists".

True about 15-20 years ago there was a lot of distaste for USSR in the USA...but that has since faded since the communist are no longer in power.  Germany is of course known for Hitler, but most people in USA realize that is in the past and think of Germany as a place of great intellect that has given the world many great philosophers and thinkers.

Very interesting posts here from everyone.

Norway - what to say:

We have freedom of speech. We are a democracy, although similar to England, we too have what I prefer to refer to as a royal nuisance. That is, a king without any real power (just lots of money and little wits). We don't have the death sentence, except in war tribunals (We haven't executed anyone since WWII). And, thank God, every man does NOT have the right to bear arms.

And we are born with skis strapped to our feet. Most of us, anyway. Norwegians are a hiking people, in all seasons. We build cabins in the mountains and go trekking every chance we get. Less than 10% of Norway is inhabited, and this leaves a lot of space to go trekking in!

And a lot of beautiful space, too. We have the renowned fjords, the glaciers, the forests, the mountains, the lakes (not as many as Suomi, but still), lots of it untouched by human hand.

We also have warmer summers (but far to short!)than you would think, thanks to the Gulf current (is that what it's called in english?), with temperatures freqently above 25 degrees celcius (which is like 200 fahrenheit! j/k, don't remember that system)

And I'm sorry, but it's a known fact that we (and possibly Sweden) have the most beautiful girls in the world. Come to Norway in the summer, you wont be disappointed.

Bragging: Norway's at the top of the world concerning issues like living standard (thanks to oil and gas), corruption (meaning we have little or none), happiness, crime (also meaning little or none), poverty (meaning little or none (in Norway, you're poor if you can't afford a trip to an exotic location in summer)).

Not so good: We are an introvert and egotistical people. There are a lot of closet racism (very few admits to being racist, but there is much prejudice)
We seem to suck at football lately, though we're sporting the best players ever. Yes, FOOTball. Which is the no. 1 sport in Norway. It's also extremely expensive here (I think Oslo is the third most expensive capital in the world (after Tokyo and some other capital)), one beer will cost you 5-6£ at bars (no kidding). This, however, does not prevent us from sporting an extremely unhealthy drinking culture. All the drinking is done in the weekends, and then it's drinking like there's no tomorrow.

Some norwegian words and phrases:

Pronounciation: e usually like in hell (although not uncommonly like æ), a usually like in british bastard, i usually like in fit, u usually like in usual, o usually like in, well, nothing really, like the very first sound you form when you say WHAT!. We also have the vocals æ (like american ass), ø (like american burn and å (like always).
KN is pronounced KN (not silent K)
V and W are pronounced the same (like vintage)

Hei - Hi
Hvor mye koster en øl - How much for a beer
Nå kødder du! - Your kidding!
Nei - No
Hadet (not usually written, oral form) - Bye
Hva skjer - What's up
Jeg heter Ezekiel - My name is Ezekiel
Jeg er sekshundreogtrettiåtte år gammel - I am sixhundredandthirtyeight years old
Jeg er en profet - I am a prophet
Du - You (singular)
Dere - You (many)
Oss - Us
Meg - Me
Min - Mine
Svenskefaen - a pet name for our sweet swedish brethren
Er det en agurk i buksa di eller er du bare glad for å se meg - Is that a cucumber in your pants or are you just happy to see me
Vil du være med hjem å se på frimerkesamlinga mi - Would you like to come to my place and check out my stamp collection

my view of Turkey

Quote:
hehe error for turkey

1) all man got mustache
2) all women wear turban
3) there is islamic gouvernement
4) turks and arabes are same
5) turks hates greeks
6) turks hates armenians
7) turks are uneducated and rude

Truths:

1- Most men got moustache in Turkey (what is wrong with moustache anyway?)

2- Most women wear Turban. Most of the women who wear Turban does not want to take it off. Most of the women who wear Turban and do not want to take it off do not want democracy. Most of the women who wear Turban and do not want to take it off and do not want democracy are stupids, and a shame for all women in the world.

3- The government is not Islamic. It is secular. However, most of the parliament members are radical islamists.

4- Turks and Arabs are NOT the same. Arabs are worse.

5- SOME of the Turks hate Greeks. MOST are different. SOME love the Greeks.

6- Item 5 applies for the Armenians.

7- Turks are NOT uneducated, but RUDE. Most of them prefer to solve the problems with their fists/knives/guns instead of with their brains.

Is there not anything GOOD about Turkey?

Of course there is

1- Most excellent coast & nature
2- Most excellent babes
3- Most excellent prices (unbelievably cheap)
4- Most excellent ppl (only if you are a friend of them )

BRAZIL! BRAZIL!

First of all we are the only country that have won the World Cup 5 times!

Ok, now serious. Brazil was discovered in 1500 by a portuguese (Pedro Álvares Cabral). We were very explored by Portugal and we have a history full of corruption. Our independence day was September 7th of 1822.

We have a decocracy here, but the "big boys"(rich person) mostly have the power. There is a lot of political problem here. And our police sucks too.

Enough of problems, now the good things:

We have a huge territory with every kind of terrain(swamps, mountains, deserts, plains...) and BEACH, we have a lot of good beaches. We have the hottest womem in the world(Much more beautiful than Argentina´s ones ). We have all kinds of food, and we eat very well(not only fast food). Well, we rules at football.

I dont know why, but we make fun of portuguese people in jokes and by history there is a great "rivalry" between Brazil and Argentina(this is why I put the coment before, but it is true!).

Some words:

Bom Dia - Good Morning
Boa Tarde - Good Afternoon
Boa Noite - Good Evening/Good Night
Futebol - Football
Eu Arrebento - I Rules(or I Ruels if you prefer )

Well, some would claim it was discovered before that, but those people only wore loincloths and penis sheaths, so they don't really count.

Well, I was saying about official things. If I start to described the Indians(dont know how you call them in English, but it is not the people of India) I would be starting a discussion about discovers and native people that would make this thread end in another off-topic discussion like so many other(the "What if..." thread for example).

So I just "accepted" that Brazil was "discovered" by Pedro Álvares Cabral, since he is the guy that showed to the rest of the world that Brazil exists(obviously that it wasnt Brazil, a country, yet and Cabral was just the captain of the expedition).
