I've been to many places cuz I'm in the US Navy.
Russia, australia, hong kong, tai-land, bali, Korea, singapore, Indonesia, and a few more.
#1 thing that stand's out (besides parties ) is talking with *people* who understand that we dont know eactchother and have no reason to dislike one another.
It almost put tear's in my eye's watching my friend talk (he's good with understanding deep accents) with a small family. Guy-25 works on a ship too, and his parents were there.
I can't begin to explain what I see there.

I'm from LITHUANIA. This small country lies near the "Baltic sea".In 2009 Lithuania will celebrate its 1000th anniversary. During this period of time, there were both great achievements and bitter losses. Today we undergo the period of creative work and fulfilment of hopes. Our small but in many ways attractive country is on its way of creating prosperous and safe conditions of life.
I live in city named Kaunas - second city in Lithuania. Lithuanian laguage is very old and dificult to learn.(Only Japanese grammar is harder).

Finland
Population ~5,2 million. Area 338 145 square kms. Borders: West: Sweden, North: Norway, East: Russia.
Finland is a modern western democracy. We are a young independent country (independence year 1917), but we have achieved helluva lot in this time: we are culturally, like, at the same level with the Swedes and the Norwegians.
I just saw two statistics of competitiveness between countries (2001): the other had Finland on third place and the other on the First (yes, even over USA  ). Nokia may be one reason to this, but there are others; ie practically everyone can read here (note - unlike in USA), and almost everyone has a roof above his head (again unlike USA). Also we're very well educated. We're pretty rich here too. Most households have modern computers and (several)TVs and that kinda stuff. (All this just to prevent anyone from thinkin we're, although neighbours, anything similar to Russia )
What comes to climate and landscape, it's a lot like Sweden's, just more lakes really. Not many mountains/fells, but more in the northern parts. Lots of forests, and overall beautiful nature. Oh, and our women are equally beautiful to those in Sweden .
Finnish people are renowned for their honesty; we're even said to be the most honest people in the world. I personally believe that . However, we're also much introverted and quiet, which I myself don't actually consider so bad a thing - just might be a bit confusing to foreign folks at first.
Ok, that's probably the most important... I don't know if you like to read some couple of words of every language here, so let's just say Finnish is hard . Oh, the name is Suomi in our own language anyway (DonGio used it without translation).

Of course I'm not an expert in our country's history, but... here are a few facts.
First of all, Russia is the biggest country in the world. Well this doesn't mean anything...
The capital of Russia is Moscow. In 1147 a wooden fort was built on the hills in the modern territory of Moscow; the city's age is being counted from that date. However, it's not the eldest city in Russia: some were built in X or XI century. They weren't united and lived as city-states.
Since the end of X century, the religion in Russia is eastern christian, however, we have freedom of religion (this is essential in country where dozens of different nations live).
Russia was a monarchy until 1917, when after a revolution communists started to rule. In 1941 Russia was attacked by Hitler's forces. We've lost many people, but finally our army managed to push the enemy from USSR and even more, pursuit them and capture Berlin.
In 1991, when the communists became too weak to control the country, Russia became a democratic country, which it still is.
Officially, we do have a freedom of speech in Russia. However, there were several big scandals that resulted in closing most 'free' TV channels...
The highest punishment we have is life-long prison. Execution is prohibited, but there are people who think it should be allowed again, so wait some changes here.
Russian language is hard to learn. If you want, several words in it:
Privet = Hello
Poka = Bye
Kak dela = How are you
And 'Geroysokoye Obshestvo' means 'Heroes Community'

Speaking of - her's my post:
Ireland has a population of 4 million ( 6million if you include Northern Ireland - which I do ) with Dublin, its capital city.
We have a relatively mild climate with average monthly temperatures ranging from 7 degrees celsius in January to 19 degrees in July. (That means it pisses down rain most of the time, and freezes your nuts off the rest of the time)
The country's total area is 84,412km squared with a total coastline distance of 3,172km.
The bio-diversity of wildlife is naturally low due to Ireland's isolation from mainland Europe so many species present on the continent are absent. Many other common animals and plants have, in fact, been introduced by human settlers.
The free profession of religion is guaranteed to all citizens by the Irish Constitution. The stated religion of the majority of people in Ireland is the Roman Catholic faith.
The Irish language evolved from Celtic immigrants around 600 BC. The language survived the introduction of the linguistic diversity of both the invading Vikings and Normans down through the centuries.
The first to bring the English language to Ireland were the Normans.
Though English was slow to become established in Ireland it eventually became the language used for all administrative and legal business. 1921 - 1972 A devolved government in Northern Ireland operates with virtual autonomy from London on local matters. Power remains exclusively in the hands of the Unionist Party. The Nationalist community has no role in government and suffers systematic discrimination in many areas including voting rights, housing and employment.
1969 Non violent campaigners, drawing inspiration from the United States, campaign for civil rights and are met with a hostile and repressive response from the Northern Ireland authorities, ushering in a period of sustained political crisis.
1970's Against the background of political crisis the early 1970's see a revival of paramilitary activity by the IRA and a corresponding growth in paramilitary violence by extreme Loyalist groups. 1980's From the early 1980's the Irish and British Governments begin to co-operate closely in efforts to achieve a widely acceptable and durable political resolution to the Northern Ireland conflict. An Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Council is formed to provide a framework in which relations between the two Governments can be conducted.
1990's In 1991/92 the Governments convene round table talks involving the Ulster Unionist Part, the Social Democrat and Labour Party, the Democratic Unionist Party and the Alliance Party. In 1997 following a renewal of the IRA ceasefire Sinn Féin enter Multi-Party Talks and substantive discussions get under way. On Friday 10th April 1999, Good Friday, a comprehensive agreement is reached between the parties containing provisions for constitutional change and new political structure in Northern Ireland, between Ireland North and South and between Britain and Ireland. On May 22nd 1998 in referendums North and South, the people of Ireland give their overwhelming endorsement of the Agreement, the first occasion since 1918 in which all of the people of Ireland voted together to decide their political future.
The Present Since the achievement of the Good Friday Agreement, its full implementation has been the highest priority for the Irish Government. Working in close co-operation with the British Government and with the parties, substantial progress has been made. On December 12th 1999, the same day on which power was devolved to the Northern Ireland Executive, The British and Irish Governments exchanged notifications bringing the British and Irish agreement into force.

I don't know about turks, but many Armenians do hate Turks and Azeris.
Anyways here are the basic facts about my county. Armenia is situated between Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan and Georgia (not the US state).
Armenia is one of the oldest countries in the world, in fact our capital Yerevan is older than the city of Rome. For two and a half millenia Armenia has been the battlegrounds between Romans, Greeks, Byzantines, Persians, Arabs, Turks and Russia.
In 301 AD Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion (Roman Empire did this only some 30 years later). Armenian language is an indoeuropean language, that is similar to all languages in Europe except Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian and Basque. In 405 AD an Armenian bishop invented the Armenian Alphabet which is still used without any changes. For the last 10 centuries Armenia has been divided between Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and Persia (eastern part was later conquered by Russia). In 1915 Turks commited a genocide against Armenians and other christians living in their native lands. Some one and a half million people were killed and 2 million were deported from Turkey. In 1920 Armenia became part of the USSR. In 1988 a terrible earthquake killed over 30.000 people in northern part of Armenia.
What's more soon a war broke out between Armenia and neighboring Azerbaijan over Nagorni Kharabakh, an Armenian region claimed by the Azeris to be theirs. Although now there is an unofficial ceasefire between the two counties, but the conflict is not solved yet.
Other than that Armenia is trying to become a democracy, although the government is still corrupt.
The death penalty has been replaced with life imprisonment.
Life quality is becoming higher and higher day by day and the rest is the same as that of other ex-communist countries.
And out of 10 million Armenians only 3 million live in Armenia, the rest maninly live in the USA (especially california), russia and france.

Macedonia
We’re a democratic republic, after we split from Yugoslavia. We have most guaranteed rights by international standards, but some don’t function in practice. Freedom of speech is unlimited, not because the government is too democratic or something but because the courts are so snailsih slow, that it will take a year before a process is even started. But there have been certain “improvements” here recently.
Government administration and health clinics are so corrupted and sluggish, that it might take you weeks to get a simple legal document or hours of waiting for a simple doctor-check. Or sometimes even enough money to buy a decent present, in order not to become bones while waiting.
Beside that, the biggest problem, is poverty (but prices are low) and the record of Europe of 40% unemployed. According to many sociologists the red line for social revolution of 10%, there should have been a revolution here a long ago. But I suppose the black market keeps us alive.
There’s no death penalty. In fact, we give amnesty to the most evil criminals and release them. (recent examples: a prostitution boss, terrorists, government officials) The highest prison punishment is like 10-15 years in practice.
When talking about culture, you should know that Macedonians (66% of total) are Slavic people, but we have many diverse minorities and cultures here too. The most widely practiced religion is Orthodox Christianity, followed by Islam. We are a small country, no see (but many lakes and rivers), and only 2 million people. And it just occurred to me – considering the limited knowledge of geography Americans have, Macedonia is in Southeastern Europe. Civilization has been around for much longer than any other European country, just second to Greece. Longer history than Britain, that is, PH. 
Like all Balkan people we’re active, spontaneous, outgoing, chatty, informal, a bit primitive, terribly impolite and lousy drivers! Unlike all Balkan people we’re somewhat more reserved, shy, tolerant and feel inferior to others.
The best thing about living here is the entertainment. Virtually it’s free, since not many people appreciate it, and there is lots of it, it’s not yet commercialized, so you can basically go somewhere and do something of quality every day for little money. Nightlife’s also exciting, with everybody outside whole night. But, unfortunately, that’s it. Other things are bad, so don’t get me complaining about it, cause I’m feeling extra happy today; don’t wanna get depressed or anything.
And this is a sentence in my language (i wont translate it, so start thinking about taking classes in Macedonian):

I currently live in America, but I was born and raised in Japan by traditionalist Japanese parents. Japan has a pretty boring culture, we have samurai and ninjitsu and we are the inventors of some pretty cool stuff. We used to attack a whole lot of people in the Pacific including China, Korea, and the Phillipines. We aren't very culturally diverse. I had never seen a black person until I was twenty. Japanese people as a whole are generally overly-serious, which is part of the reason why I moved to the US.
Japan has many great festivals including the Sakura festival and the Sumou season, which are simply awesome. Sumou has got to be the most underrated sport on the planet. It's so fun to watch!

Unfortunately the Queen of England can trace her lineage back to the early 800s, for example to Alfred the Great is a distant relation. Of course it's plausible to say that due to occupation or foreign blood and so on the Monarchy is not continual, but the same applies to any monarchy.

The Shetlands were not "occupied" by England, they were given to Scotland legally by Norway. England does not occupy the Shetlands either, it's a part of Scotland, which is a part of the United Kingdom. It's been part of Scotland or the UK for nearly 600 years, it was part of Scandanavian culture for roughly the same period. Saying we're "occupying" the isles is like saying France occupies Calais.

I don't think the British ever seriously planned to occupy Norway, it just wasn't worth the hassle frankly. What with the Wallarchen expedition and the Peninsula draining our manpower the only thing left was the blockade. You were occupied by Denmark by the way if you mean 1809.

Blair's political spin is not fact. The Normans were no more Norse than current South Africans are British. Worse in fact because by 1066 the Normans didn't even speak norse anymore and their culture was recognisably different. Nor did the Normans introduce Christianity into the UK, that was the Romans in the 1st or 2nd Century. By 1066 it was firmly established across the British Isles. William didn't answer in the slightest to Norway or any other Scandanavian power of the time, so I doubt you could call it a scandanavian colony in 1066, despite having been so in the past.
