btw, who said cloverfield wasn't gory?

Someone gets impaled by a steel bar and lies there for two hours...

some guy explodes in a bloody mess, because he's contaminated by an alien virus...

Back gets sliced open by some spider alien offspring thingy...

yeah, it's okay...

Not really, but I like it as "entertainment" though rarely do they reach the status of "worthy of remembering clearly and watching frequently" or something. And I usually hate gory "horror" movies which have ridiculously low amounts of fright (but have gore). Those aren't even horror for goodness' sake, just pointless gore (for some people, disgust ).

Yes, I like to call those movies which have high amounts of gore as gorefests. Usually they don't have any fright and in my opinion, they are not Horror. Take for example the Saw series. Now people might say that is Horror but imo, it is something like a new torture genre. It isn't scary at all. Now a movie which is a good horror movie is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Now, that movie doesn't have high amounts of gore (contrary to the title of the movie, there are hardly any chainsaw killings). It's scary because what happens in the movie could happen to anybody and it's that what scares people to this day. There could be somebody out there who is actually like that and the thought of it happening to you or a person you know of is a scary thought. After that movie came the sequels and remakes of it which leaned more towards the gorefest and didn't have as much horror as it used to have.

Another example of a good horror movie is the movie, Halloween. A few people get killed but you don't see much blood in it. For those who haven't seen it, it's a movie about a man named Michael Myers who escapes from a mental institution and then tries to find his sister and kill her, and in the process he kills many other people most notably her friends. The things that are scary in it is when he suddenly pops out of nowhere or when there is a large sound or when the music suddenly builds up and he then comes from nowhere (which is what horror is mainly about these days imo).

A movie which is good entertainment and could be considered as a gorefest is a movie called Hellrasier. I have that movie and I really like it. I consider it a cross between Horror and a Gorefest since there is quite a lot of gore in it but it does have elements of Horror in it as well. These days, the horror genre is declining and there's more blood than horror as you have said.

Quote:
Jeepers Creepers is one example of a good "horror" movie, or "The Descent". "The Cave" is not 100% horror it's also action-packed and it's good. I also like "mysterious" and enigmatic movies (usually can be considered horror/thriller), and I do not ask for an explanation at all (why should I be omniscient and know about it when the protagonists don't? makes no sense to me.) so open-ends are not bad for me at all.

I have seen Jeepers Creepers and it's quite a good movie. Since you like a horror/thriller kinda movie, would you like the movie Scream? That's a thriller/horror movie and it, in a way, reinvented the horror/thriller genre since it was something new and didn't have as much gore as some of the other films that were around then, which is definitely a good thing. Don't get me wrong though, I love gorefests, but when there is too much gore in a horror movie, it kinda derails from the point of what the movie was originally trying to be, and it sorta leans towards an action/gorefest thing.

Evil Dead is a movie which is horror but also a gorefest. However, it doesn't contain an amount of gore that will ruin the movie. It's a really good movie and I recommend you try and see that one if you haven't already seen it.

Quote:
I don't like Freddy or Jason movies, or other such "classic" flicks, I like the more frightening-mysterious type of horror rather than slashy gory and pointless ones.

Well the original Nightmare on Elm Street is a good movie, and it was good in that it had creative scenes (and some real creative deaths) and it was nicely done. The gore in it didn't derail from the movie's intent and watching Freddy is always fun. He's a fun character and even though he is a villain, sometimes it's good to see what he will do to certain people and I sometimes feel myself cheering for Freddy.

Sadly, the sequels that came after that (and also after the Friday the 13th movies) just became repetitive and boring. It included more characters that were just annoying and I wanted them out of the movie ASAP. Namely the annoying characters would be the hot blonde characters that would scream all the time.

Halloween was good in that the main character was Jamie Lee Curtis and she was a different kind of character in that she wasn't like the other female characters that were in other movies at the time. She didn't scream and instead she tried to fight the main character. She was, in a way, a strong character and this is what gives the movie the energy that it needs to have become a great horror movie.

I may have around 150 so called "Splatter" movies. I like them best if they contain shocking and laughing parts, like Braindead for example. Just awesome. Some of them are just pure shocking, and you really need a goos stomach to stay cool while watching. Especially the asian ones...I won't name them here, due to obvious reasons ..

Braindead is a great movie in that there are a mix of horror/splatter/comedy parts and it all fits very well. I mean the priest who starts fighting all the zombies, pure classic. And I think I know what movies you are talking about that you won't mention. You used to show me some of them back in 2006, lol.

I just hope that your daughter doesn't find any of those movies. I hope they're hidden well.

Maybe I haven't seen Scream, I might someday it sounds like a good "horror" movie. And most times I hate gorefests -- I don't mind gore, but as long as it keeps the genre. Most gorefests are like black comedy with gore, and like I said, most of the gore is like "transparent" for me (in entertainment value) so they are left with black comedy, which I don't particularly like at all.

And I haven't seen the Texas Chainsaw Massacre either but I take your word for it that it is a good see and probably will try to see it (but due to my schedule, I'll probably need to wait for it in the TV).

You guys certainly have an interesting taste.

You probably don't know the movies I like I guess then.

1. Schindlers Liste (piece of art), Some Like it Hot (Marylin Monroe, Jack Lemon and another great guy), Breakfast at Tiffanys, Witness for the Prosecution (SO AWESOME!!), any James Bond with Sean Connery, Murder on the Nile, Orient Express (both are Agatha Christies Hercule Poirot detective Storys... Peter Ustinov is the greatest) and many more which don't spring to my mind this moment.

EDIT: And I could for the love of me never grasp what people could find appealing in so called "splatter" movies. It's just gore... which makes it so terribly primitive. But I guess if you want to turn of your brain for 2 hours that is a way to go?

Yeah, it's really good. And I'm talking about the original 1970's version, not any of these dumb remakes that have been made. The narrator at the beginning straight away gives you a weird feeling and prepares you for what is about to come.

@ Azagal

And Splatter movies don't make you turn off your brain for a few hours as you said. They are a bit more than Gore because some of them incorporate horror elements in it as well but there is just a hell of a lot more blood than in the traditional horror movie (that most of us are probably used to).

An example of a splatter movie which contains elements of humour and horror is a movie called Braindead or also known as Dead Alive in some countries. Angelito mentioned it on his top 5 favourite movies list. It's really a great movie.

Perhaps you're right I don't know (thus the "?"). It's just that I don't understand how something get's scarier just because you add blood to it. I mean psychological horror is 10x as effective as the feeling of disgust. For me gore is just a boring excuse for people who can't come up with anything interesting so they just show a lot of blood. And I'm not into that kind of entertainment.

But yeah maybe I'm wrong, there must be more to gore than just the primitiveness or I guess you guys wouldn't watch it.

I wouldn't say that putting more gore in makes it scarier, it would just add to the entertainment value I suppose. For me, it doesn't really detract from the original movies intent. That's just me though.

Well to be honest, like I said, gore is "transparent" thus it doesn't really alter the genre by itself, but some movies with too much gore have little other aspects so they are like some sort of "black comedy" which I hate.

Gore isn't bad but doesn't add anything interesting either, and when you focus on it, you lose track of the important aspects. That's why gorefests are usually bad.

I love Jim Carrey but the thing is, he acts in a very similar way in most of the movies he plays. What I like to see is someone who can be a dynamic actor. Someone who play an evil, evil bastard in one film, but a very nice person in another film. Jack Nicholson is one example of this kind of actor that I mean.

Alright, an update to my favourite movies:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mad Max 2
This movie is just kick arse and it's set in outback NSW, Australia which is even better because I kinda know the environment.
This movie is mostly action but some of the other scenes such as when the leader and Max are talking to each other when Max is about to leave after he completed the deal that they had and the leader tries to get Max to stay. It's a good scene and shows that Max is really hurt by everything that has happened to him but he stays strong and tries to do what he has to do to survive. It shows that Max is a human after all.
The action sequence at the end when Humongous is trying to get the truck with all the fuel in it....it's just one of the best action scenes I have ever seen in my life. The music also goes really well with it and the way Wez and Humongous die at the end...Wow!!
All in all, this is one movie that you have to see. It's one of the rare sequel films that is actually as good, if not better than the original film. A definite must see.
A Clockwork Orange
This movie tells the tale of Alex Large or also known as Alex DeLarge (which was the name that the actor decided to call it, to make it slightly original). It starts off when Alex is a young boy (about 16 or so since he still goes to school) and his criminal activities, including the break in of a home and then rape of a woman, drugs and then eventually the murder of another woman. He is in a group with his three other 'droogs', or friends in this case. He gets sent to jail and then agrees to participate in a new program which changes the person in that they are unable to have the will to make any wrong choices. They get sick every time they see pornography, naked women or anything that is bad.
As soon as he gets out of the rehabilitation, things don't quite work out the way he wants and he is assaulted by two of his former droogs who are now policemen and bashed up by old people (that he once bashed up when he was younger) and he eventually ends up trying to commit suicide which fails. He eventually gets back to what he used to be.
It's a very good film with good music, a very good story and superb acting. This film is a must see.
Braindead
I recently got this movie because I saw it once before, plus I've also talked about this movie quite a lot in this thread. It's essentially a splatter movie but filled with comedy as well. The film was directed by Peter Jackson and contains some of his personal touches. He really liked the original King Kong (which is cool because he later made a remake of it). The original King Kong has a place called Skull Island 9I think) and Peter Jackson referenced that in the movie, Braindead, which starts out on Skull Island with two people trying to get a box containing some saumarian monkey (spelling?) to be taken to the zoo in New Zealand.
After that, it has a love story between Lionel and Paquita, which is made more difficult by Lionels obsessed mother. One day, Lionel takes Paquita to the zoo, where all hell breaks loose. The monkey bites Lionels mother, who soon after dies and turns into a zombie. This is where the movie really starts to pick up. There are some disgusting bits like where Lionels mother's ear falls off and into some soup and then, unknowingly, eats it up in front of some guests. Her blood also spurts into another mans soup and he unknowingly eats it, while his wife saw it and then proceeds to getting out of there.
Eventually, the mother escapes and then all hell breaks loose and more people start getting turned into zombies. The Priest is just pure awesome "I kick arse for the Lord!!" is an example of a very funny bit in the movie. He eventually turns into a zombie, and Lionel puts them all to sleep and keeps them in his basement. Two of the zombies, the Priest and some nurse, have sex with one another and then give birth to a zombie baby. It might seem really silly but it works quite well, because this baby is just a menace and is the only zombie to actually survive in the movie. The scene where Lionel takes the baby to the park is one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen in my life and the reactions from people are hilarious. I read that it took about 2 days to shoot this scene and it may have been the last scene to have been shot, but it was definitely worth it and it makes the movie just that extra bit funnier and more special.
Many people regard it as one of the goriest movies of all time, and it definitely lives up to that title especially at the end with the lawnmower scene. But too much gore isn't that bad. It just adds to the fun factor that the film can give off, and sometimes gore is funny, if used well. I really recommend this movie to people who like splatter films mixed with horror. This movie is definitely not for people with weak stomaches. Good stuff.
