Quote: But you can also use public funding to make opera tickets cheaper hence available to more people.
Which means you mostly subsidize it for people who already have enough money to buy tickets themselves.

People who can't afford to go to the opera generally don't want to. Never have I heard it said, "I'd like to go to the opera, but it's too expensive."

Opera is not a very good example, I agree. Theater however is not like that, there's a kind of play for every taste.

I'd go to the opera a lot more often if it was cheaper.

Admit the truth Corribus, you started this thread and then used me to resurrect it because you want every one to see your triplet art piece, don't you.

Yes, it also can be named art. It's a personal opinion whether something is art or not. For you cooking your own flesh isn't an art, for me Claude Joseph Vernet isn't an artist - and we're both right and both wrong at the same time.

Does good art still have meaning if no one will pay for it?
Humans like to think that art defines us but animals can create art too- nature is the most powerful art of all (photography highlights this).
If everything is art, does art lose it's significance?

Most of those greatest (IMO) artists earn almost nothing from their art.

If you are asking what are the chances Bill Gates will be mentioned in future Art encyclopedias, I think is zero. Other than that, everyone can speculate on.

There is always esthetical concern in art. You may not want to seek "beauty" in the traditional sense, you may not deliberately theorize it but there is still an esthetical concern. If that concern is not a priority, as in a video game cover, jean commercial, furniture design etc etc, we can call the result artsy, but not art. So no, Bill Gates is not an artist.

Aesthetic is also subject to interpretations. For example, I find that Fnord erm codes are beautiful (organized, explained), so as compliment I would call him an artist. It is meant as compliment, not as statement. Same thing for soccer players, we often call them artists, but only as compliment.

Quote: But what really does "esthetical" mean, ARTu?
There are 4 basic "fields" in philosophy:
1- Ontology: What exists? What are things.
2- Epistemology: What is knowledge, what can we know?
3- Ethics: What is right and wrong?
4- Esthetics: What is beautiful and why?
And esthetical concern is about an art piece's "beauty" in itself, without references to other benefits. The artist can do it for the money but he'll still has that esthetical concern. I must also emphasize that beauty is a very deceptive word here if you take it in the traditional sense.
