Maurice said: Furthermore, when they start to rile up for war against (apparently) the white oppressors, someone states that life originated in Africa and therefore all people with African roots should be protected - but then fail to realise that everyone has its roots there, even the "conquerers" if you go back far enough. Furthermore, they make it look like the conquests of centuries ago are still occuring present day, as if justifying launching a conquest of their own.
sounds like another white guilt movie aimed at making blacks think they deserve something for nothing, or that they should be fighting whites instead of trying to productively fit into society like everyone else. am i wrong in this assumption? because there are far too many movies aimed at blacks with this theme, and hollywood keeps goddamn making them.
i mean, i know the character is "black panther" and all, but come on...

The bad guys aim for the "fight" option; the king is a good guy and opts for the "peaceful" option, of co-existing. So I guess while the theme is brought up, it isn't validated at the end of the movie, so to speak.

good. i was hoping that's not why the movie was so popular among blacks. i'm sick of hollywood constantly reviving racism.

Well he was a villian, but the "make things right for the wrongdoings" kind of villain. So a symphatetic villain.
BUT I must agree with fred79 that "make white people feel bad" agenda is pushed in Hollywood for some time now and this movie only confirms it. Few words in the entire movie are enough. I really wanted to ignore it, but it's not possible. When I hear about "opressed brothers" all over the globe, and I'm sure he means black people, I feel like our race is some kind of opressors, like we literally make their lives miserable on a daily basis. It's always easy to say that your entitled to get support from the wealthier especially if you don't want to work and blame the whole world for your bad situation...
PS: I'm probably going to see "The Shape of Water" over the weekend. Let's see how this well-recieved take on a love fairytale fares...

watched "saving mr. banks" with the family. we all got hit right in the feels. highly recommended; especially if mary poppins was part of your childhood.

i WAS interested in watching that one. but after foolishly reading some idiotic reviews, i completely lost interest in it due to the fact that they were trying to make it sound like it was teaching people it was ok to be physically attracted to animals, and to have relationships with them. the reverse hype that those dullards were spouting just killed it for me; afterward i didn't even want to watch it, because i'd end up thinking about those dumbasses again and it would ruin the immersion into the film.

go for Casino next. You greek motherbleeper you.
@KebabJosephWatson: lol. We were actually on the same desert island, Elvin and I, but I got rescued earlier, since I first watched Goodfellas in 2013 or so.
Since then, it along with Casino are one of the few movies to never leave my hard drive.

@Zenofex: Yeah, you said something similar about the Godfather. By now, I'm used to you having no appreciation for true classics. I wonder what your example for a great movie would be, though.
@Kip: Comparing Casino and Goodfellas is a fine example of the distinction between a really good movie and a great movie. While both have the same director, similar cast, same style of narration and cinematography, same theme, only one is a masterpiece. Of course, Casino is still better than most of the gangster movies out there.
@Maurice: I remember, when I told a friend raised in the late 60's and early 70's, that I havent seen Spartacus untill my late twenties, he was shocked. I guess, it's a generational thing, my time of "exploring youth" was the 90's and in the 90's, the Goodfellas was everywhere you could start.

I haven't seen the original Spartacus either, but yeah, that one was before my time as well. Goodfellas is about spot-on for me, though, since my teenage years were at the end of the 80's, early 90's. Yet, haven't seen it.
I guess these movies are on my movie bucket list .

Really? You guys talk on and on about crap comic movies here for like post over post, analyzing them to death. There are like 200-300 classics and they are classics for a reason. I'd start if I were you, and not just American ones. 1930's or before that can be hard to watch sometimes, but starting with the 40's, everything is really enjoyable.
This made me curious. How many people here have seen Citizen Kane, Amarcord, Vertigo, Sunset Boulevard, Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, Metropolis, Bicycle Thieves, M, A Streetcar Named Desire, La Dolce Vita... Not all of them maybe but most of them?

when I like both of the films, for me, Casino is a tad better, since it explores the net of mafia on a larger scale, rather than a small crew.
That and also the larger presence of Joe Pesci, even though he's awesome in both films.
looking forward to the Irishman, might even see it in a theatre.
speaking of old films, recently I saw Bridge On The River Kwai. expected more conflict between rhe brit pows and the japs.

That was a good one, too. I think rather than a war movie, it was about conflicting moral values. The Brit officer's morality was so based on sense of duty and work ethics, he forgot the context in which he was building the bridge. Great ending and the music made it all seem so nihilistic.
In the Casino, the scene that got to me most was how Joe Pesci was killed, I even checked out if it was real but not exactly. They did beat the guy to death with baseball bats but he wasnt with his brother and they called him in for a meeting, he entered the room, saw them with the bats, immediately realized his end, started crying and asked if he could pray. I'm also looking forward to the Irishman but I didnt like the Departed as much as his previous films, so I feel like I can be disappointed. Also, if you like Scorsese type gangster films you might want to check out Kill the Irishman, pretty underrated.

It's Fellini, one of his most memorable films if you ask me, it's biographic, his childhood. Both are Italian films but cant remember the director of Bicycle Thieves now.
