"I don't want this damned apple!" Ivana told Vosh in a strong yet low voice as she threw it to the ground.

"And what the f**k is that? Who the f**k are those people? How did you do that? Don't tell me you are trying to cross me?" The thief nagged the wizard in the same tone as if all the words she held the entire encounter suddenly bursted.

"I'm telling you, don't ever, ever cross me or you'll feel my sting! You must explain everything to me and most importantly send me back home!"

The look on Vosh's face turned into a slight frown as Ivana spoke.  He shook his head before speaking: "I don't know who these people are, I only gathered that they are indeed powerful and interested in us.  They didn't disclose any concrete information, however, but judging by the fact that we're still breathing and standing here in one piece tells me they did not mean any harm."
"Now", he said as he turned around, "the place I'm staying at is just around the corner there.  Follow me if you want your answers.  But take note that you might not like them."

With that Vosh continued walking back towards the inn.

The rogue felt credibility from the wizard's words. Her tensed body started to relax and the wrinkles on her face began to disappear. Surprisingly, the thief mysteriously stopped nagging at the wizard. After nodding slightly, Ivana continued to follow Vosh.

Scav hadn't heard the term 'Infused' before but had experienced enough of this world to glean the meaning.

"What kinds of things can you do?" he asked, not even having to feign interest as he thought he would have to do. Perhaps it was unfair, but he'd built an image of Tarkas as a puffed-up blowhard from the moment the man approached the archon, but layer by layer would peel that back until he found the man beneath. As unused as he was to this world's custom, human nature it seemed would never change. The Wastes had revealed the darker aspects of those who had lived before, but it was again a simple matter of layers, of custom, of propriety.

The gleam in the man's eye as he'd announced his status -- apparently secret but entrusted to him nonetheless --  revealed a passion that was perhaps the first loose corner he could peel from. And maybe he'd learn something he could replicate, some innate magic within himself he only needed to know how to awaken. Slowly but surely, this world seemed less an obstacle and more an opportunity.

---West Bailey---

The inn in question was just around the corner, and Vosh and Ivana would arrive there without further interruptions. The place was typical of its kind, with a tavern next door taking care of the needs of its customers. While cheap, it was relatively clean and the building - like the rest of the city they had seen so far - appeared to be only a few years old.

---Underground---

Corina would lean back some, getting comfortable as well. She did not comment on Cyrus' reaction but instead answered his question.

"Lana. She touches every part of the city. Urging the car in the right direction is trivial for her."

As if on cue, the car would begin moving, quickly accelerating toward the east. Cyrus would see newly dug tunnels as they moved past or through them, almost as fast as the original would have gone ...had it ever been completed in the first place.

"Vardaris they call this place.  It's cozy and mostly quiet... well as quiet as a place like this can truly get", Vosh said before stepping inside.  He gave a nod to the innkeeper and proceeded towards his room.  "Can you imagine these people have communal lodging rooms?  I was lucky I managed to negotiate a private room for myself, but as I said, coin is the grease to every cog in this place", he continued, "That being the case, I would assume you'd like a room for yourself too, am I correct?"

A tavern! Ivana told herself excitedly. Her eyes widened and glittered, her jaw dropped at the sight of the place. She unconsciously followed the wizard to his room, barely understanding what he spoke. The thief's mind was busy, filled with plans on what to do to her favorite place. She could already feel the ambience of the place, could taste the ale that she's about to drink. Only the last sentence of what Vosh said made it to her ears.

"I like to go to the tavern first," Ivana responded to Vosh, the twinkle in her eyes still visible and this time, instead of a bitter facade, a pleasant visage can be noticed on the thief. Moreover, she was smiling, like a meek sheep towards his master.

"Cast me a spell that can make me speak and understand their language. And finally," she smiled wider while extending her palm to Vosh, "Coins that can buy a keg of ale."

"Weren't you just a few moments ago adamant on getting down to business?", Vosh asked with a smirk on his face as they stopped in front of the door to his room, "Unfortunately, I have not yet mastered a spell that would enable me or you to speak foreign tongue.  I do, however, possess a spell that I can only use on myself to understand others' speech and writing.  That's how I've been able to learn the basics of the local language.  You will need me to translate and", he said while making a coin appear between his fingers, "luckily for you, I am feeling generous today."

Vosh made a turn and began walking towards the tavern, only checking to see if Ivana was following him as he reached the inn's exit.

With a blink of an eye, Ivana was no longer behind Vosh. The wizard could find her already ahead of him, almost running towards the tavern.

"Oh! Tavern, tavern here I come! Make sure you can handle me!" Ivana whispered enthusiastically along with occasional giggling. As she reached the entrance, she slammed the door open while closing her eyes, trying to surprise herself, still with a wide smile!

Different expressions raced across Tarkas' face. It was clear that caution and pride are fighting each other in his heart.

"It's better if I just show you, but..." he glanced about again, "not here. Come."

He led Scav into what seemed to be a secluded alleyway, waited for a few moments to make sure no one can see or hear them and then straightened up.

"All right, here we go."

The wampyr closed his red eyes in concentration, half-raised his hands to put them apart from his body and... started to twinkle. His skin seemed to get brighter and brighter, until he shone as much as his polished armor. Then, as gradually as the light appeared, it faded. Tarkas lowered his hands and opened his eyes. A huge smile of satisfaction and pride apparent on his face.

"Well? Amazing, right? No, no, no, you don't have to answer. It's perfectly fine to be speechless at such a display. Infused are a rare breed and just being next to one when he's using his powers must be overwhelming. It's all right. It overwhelmed me as well when I first found out. And then it dawned upon me: I am a literal beacon of light and hope! All I needed now was to find a way to manifest my destiny. If only I knew where to look..." His face fell, but he quickly recovered, "Still, maybe the archon can put me in the right direction. After all, even the mighty Heracles got most of his fame by doing the bidding of a city ruler."

---Alley--

"That... and for slaughtering his family." came the response from a female voice as a blonde woman stopped by the mouth of the alley, watching Tarkas and Scav. Her eyes taking the pair in for a few moments before her lips curled into a smile.

"Though I suspect you will have more in common with Iolaos in this story, lightbearer..." She glanced between the two as she stepped closer. Tarkas would recognise her revealing outfit as that of a Hierophant of Aphrodite, and the woman certainly had the looks to match it.

"So many interesting people today... I wonder just what the gods have in store for us."

---Tavern---

Several people would turn to look as Ivana slammed the door open, eyeing her with mild annoyance. The rest of the patrons were too far to hear her entrance over the live music, or too absorbed in their company to notice. The tavern looked pretty modest from the outside, though it was near capacity once you stepped indoors. The smell of alcohol in the air was only matched by that of roasted meat, and there was plenty of both moving around on plates.

Unlike the taverns she and Vosh might be used to, the servers here were all male, and there was no sign of ale around. The locals seemed to prefer wine or some other beverage that was served in smaller glasses. It appeared to be clear until one poured water in it, then it would turn a hazy white.

For the first time since they got to this strange town, the pair would have the chance to observe some of the other races that called this place home. One of the servers bounced around on hooved feet, balancing two trays in his arms and a third one on the small horns coming out of his forehead. One of the patrons was considerably shorter than the rest, with a long braided beard and a soft pointy cap. He was barefoot and smoking a pipe between sips.

Scav chuckled, mouth moving before his mind caught up. "Heh, y'know, your, uh, talent reminds of..." he trailed off as he realized Tarkas would likely have no idea what he was talking about, and even were he to know it was not a comparison many would take as flattery. Before he had the chance to deflect, however, a woman appeared in the mouth of the alleyway and supplied a divergence of her own.

As she spoke with Tarkas, Scav's eyes drank. It had been ages since Scav had seen such temptation so close-up, and even longer since he'd sampled. He'd pushed down the temptation with Alanna from his old crew, always preferring to keep everything with his team professional and platonic. There was little room in the Wastes for the dalliance people enjoyed before the Sundering, and much less in his line of work. The harsh environment didn't play well with the kind of enticement this new arrival offered, and Scav did not begrudge it.

Suddenly reminded he was back in polite society, he moved his eyes up and watched her face instead. He couldn't trust this woman and they were cornered in an alley. That thought would help his mind to behave.

And if things went south, at least her attention was focused on his new companion for the time being.

Tarkas started as the woman spoke. He's usually more observant than to let people creep up on him like that. He must have dropped his guard in all this excitement. That won't do. Being an Infused was great, but he could still die if he wasn't careful, and where would his destiny be then? He took a mental breath and looked to the hierophant.

"So many interesting people today... I wonder just what the gods have in store for us."

"Isn't that something you should be telling us, my lady?" He asked in a serious and puzzled tone as he made a polite bow.

Duke of the Glade

It had been a slow, and somewhat obnoxious, day. The caravan the wampyri had been hired onto had arrived days ago, but the merchant he'd been hired by had kept all of his retainers on hand (and their pay held hostage) and had taken his sweet time hiring a new crew before finally paying out what had been owed. Waiting for that money, and the cover that the completed contract would give him, had kept the man away from the hunter's display in the arena... which was a shame. A damned shame. If what he'd heard was true, there might have been a new blade technique or two to learn from the man.

Twirling the signed and sealed writ in front of him that declared he was a reliable, certified merchant guard, the wampyri muttered, "Honestly, what a massive waste of time..." And he looked down at all the people splitting up and wandering away from the archon's bout. From his vantage point on a near-by roof, the features of passer-byes weren't exactly muted, but they were relatively indistinct. A man and a woman, and then a much more scantily clad woman, came closest, -that last one garnered the most attention from the slacking, and recently unemployed, guard,- and then they ducked into an alley beside him. When the priestess followed those two, the wampyri shook his head, brushed a band of golden hair from his eyes, and muttered to himself, "Bloody nobles." If someone was going to get knifed, or worse incredibly lucky, in that alley, then this was one ex-guard who wasn't going to stick around for it to become his problem.

Now, how to leave? He could just jump a few roofs down to get back to the tavern, but... well, he didn't much feel like building hopping today. Besides, the whole point of coming here and taking the most boring contract of his entire life was to lay low. Tales of some ruffian skipping his way across buildings would hardly go unnoticed by the local constabulary. No, no, he'd have to use the street. Simple enough. Shame the alley was occupied... and glowing. Nope. Not his problem. He'd have to do this the careful way. Looking at the street and nearby windows to make sure no one was looking this way, the man stands up, sighs, and steps off the building.

In a cloud of mist and without a sound except for the billowing of his cloak, the wampyri lands on the walkway in a crouch. A ten meter fall... not the farthest he's ever gone, but it would have been enough to make people look at him funny if they'd seen. As it stood, no one should have noticed the fall or the rapidly dissipating cloud of water vapor... well, except for the three perverts in the alley. They might have seen the corner of his cloak and a puff of the mist that had cushioned his fall. If they weren't busy flashing each other in there. This place was filled with people who had no shame.

Oh. And he was definitely seen by that kid who was sitting behind the open ground-floor window. Looking straight at him. Blinking a few times. Cute kid. She was definitely going to tell people about this... darting his head to the left and right, the wampyri lifted a finger to his lips, winks, and flicks a coin to the kid. Something to buy a snack from the market... for a child that age, that should be enough of a bribe to keep her from blabbing. And if it wasn't, the kid's excited babbling should be dismissed as the wild imagination of a child.

Nodding to himself, assured that he had nothing to worry about, Simon Kinnen the wampyri 'caravan guard' tucked his official writ into his breast pocket and made his way towards the tavern. Tomorrow would be a better day. After all, if what he'd heard of the archon's invitation had been true, he'd soon be gainfully employed in a far more interesting affair soon.

"It's different," she whispered to herself, eyes narrowed and one eyebrow raised. She looked around and inspected the surroundings. After a short moment, she slightly nodded as if she'd agree with whatever she's thinking about.

Ivana then grabbed Vosh's arm and dragged him to the nearest vacant table. She smiled at him and spoke, her tone had uncertainty to it,"This place is very different from ours. It seems that they don't have ale here. The drink looks weird..."

"But I'm sooo willing to try it!" the thief exclaimed to the wizard, her eyes glittering again along with a huge smile.

Before the hierophant could answer, Tarkas noticed some movement around the corner. Not even movement, just a slight shift of light. It was probably nothing, maybe even his imagination, but he was still annoyed at himself for letting someone sneak up on him just moments before.

The former watchman raised a finger to his lips and crept towards the corner. When he got there, he pressed his back against the wall and cautiously peered around. The alley was empty. For a moment he thought he saw a cloak disappear behind the next turn, but that was it. He watched the passage for another five seconds and when nothing else happened, turned back to the rest.

"Apologies, my lady, I was under the impression someone followed you. You were saying?"

Cyrus stares out the window at the stone walls. He resigns himself to meeting this Mistress. He did give Eddie his word, but perhaps he should just abandon his duty and run. Running was easier. Shaking those thoughts away he turns back to Corina.

"Tell me about this Mistress of yours?" If he was going to be meeting someone, he would at least to know a few things about them. Going in blind was never ideal.

---West Bailey, Alley---

Alira offered Scav a bit of a grin, his attention clearly not as unwanted as he might think. She then turned to Tarkas and smiled faintly. "I do not presume to speak for the gods. They are as fickle as ever. I do know that it is no coincidence that so many interesting individuals found their way here now. Something is going to happen, whether the gods are behind it or not. As the shadows moved around the corner, she would follow Tarkas' gaze for a few moments before turning back to the two men.

---West Bailey, Tavern---

A waiter would soon approach the table Vosh and Ivana were at, greeting them with a polite smile and offering them the menu after placing a bread basket, utensils, and a water jar with a pair of glasses. "Welcome. What do you wish to drink? Wine, Ouzo, Tsipouro?"

The observant eye would spot a few odd bottles on some of the tables. They were opaque, with a black label, marked only with a white wide-brimmed pointy hat. The patrons that were enjoying them appeared to fall mostly under two categories, either couples in semi-isolated tables, or parties of young men in some kind of uniform.

Simon would receive a similar treatment once he was seated at the nearby empty table, greeted in the local tongue first then quickly followed by the Dacian dialect if he didn't respond right away. Several people would glance his way for a brief moment, some of them wearing the trademark dark green cloaks of the Forest Guard, before going back to their drinks, food, and occasionally off-key singing.

---Underground---

Corina would watch Cyrus for a long moment, her posture shifting slightly as she got more comfortable, reclining on the seats. "It is not my place to speak for her."

She pursed her lips slightly, then moved to sit upright again, her back straight. "My Mistress is Lady Selene of House Morrigan, formerly of Albion, consort to the archon of Thessaloniki. Sometimes referred to as the White Witch of the Swamp."

She paused, looking directly into his eyes for the first time, and only for a brief moment. "I would omit that last part around her. We are almost there." She moved to stand in one fluid motion.

Given that Vosh spent some time in the city, he grew accustomed to the general feel of the tavern and what it had to offer.  Wine was no strange thing for him, and neither were ouzo or tsipouro after a few visits.  The black labeled bottle, however, was something he did not see before and it quickly started tickling his interest.  For all he knew, it could've been an exquisite and exotic drink, and the white hat marking it left a lot to imagination.

"Good man, bring to us that liquid", he said while pointing at one of the curious bottles, "And bring each of other drinks in pairs of glasses.  My friend here wants to try all you offer."

There was also the question of food left to be tackled.  An empty stomach invites many troubles to a man drinking, as the old saying goes.  Taking precautionary measures against intoxication, one would be prudent to make sure his plate, and later his gut, is well filled with substantial amounts of food.  "Also, good man, we require proper meal.  Bring to us most fine meats of house, and bring proper seasoning", Vosh said with a smile on his face and two silver coins, of an unfamiliar mint to the waiter, in his fingers, "More of these if we are pleased with service."
