What I see here...
I tend to look at all of HC as a real, concrete place where I can go visit to get away from the real world (perhaps a sign that I've been here too long )
There used to be a time when I would look to this forum as a large social gathering, people out on the lawn debating everything and anything they could think up - from ancient times to modern day politics.
I fancied that if I so desired I could sidle up and listen in on any of these conversations and learn a thing or two. Sometimes I might hear of other countries, and learn to see things from a different point of view - and other times I would just gain a little insight as to who that person was on the other side of the monitor.
Quite often I didn't agree with these people, and sometimes I would be stunned to find that someone's point of view so strongly contradicted the impression of them that I had - but nonetheless I always felt there was respect here.
It seemed to me to be accepted that people don't always see eye to eye, and rather than judge people and belittle them for a differing opinion - members seemed to rise to the challenge to discuss their own views and debate each other. More often than not, people's views didn't change - but they left the discussion with a better understanding of what the world looked like through another person's eyes.
What happened to that place?
Now when I look at this forum, I see a barren wasteland, smoke rising from foxholes and injured warriors limping to their corner to gather more troops to join their fight.
The battles never seem to contain themselves to the thread where they began - they spread like wildfire across the forum, like landmines detonating with no warning.
It makes me so sad to see it like this...
I know that people from all the different camps will see my post as a direct attack, but I'm asking you please to drop the defenses here and just read my words at face value.
I don't think anyone here is evil, or wrong - I just think that a lot of you see the world in one way and one way only - and you have no tolerance for anyone who doesn't share your views.
I'm asking that you look at this forum for what it is - an opportunity to learn about different people, and see the world from another vantage point.
And no, I'm not a moderator that needs to be coddled by pretty words, and yes I do understand that a lot of the time you will be stunned that people actually think the way that they do - you might even be outraged - but if you could all just try to listen, respect and understand each other - this forum could go back to being a great place to get to know each other.
If any of you are still reading this () Setitetart and others have started a number of interesting topics that aren't just an opportunity to fight some more (thank you guys for that) It would be great to see some of those threads come to life - there is so much more to say than just "you're an idiot".

As a person from the HV camp, I'll say that I think things are bad because ToE is coming, and this means people are less eager to come up with new things, me included.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with a good debate. With the many 'sensitive' topics in the Other Side forum, I think it's only normal that sometimes people or their ideas clash. Somehow I guess these clashes can even be a learning experience, because in a very confronting way they show that other people or groups may hold ideas that are completely opposite to yours, and hold many valid points as well.
At the point where discussions become personal attacks, or when people start provoking others by rediculising their ideas or groups they sympathise with, something is definitely wrong.
Do what you want, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. That should be the first and the last thing on your mind when you make a post in a volatile thread. It's okay to express your opinion, unless that means dragging ideas or people through the mudd.
I will withdraw from the religious discussions that are going on, because I don't think I can add anything sensible that might constructively contribute to any of them anymore. On the bright side, it's great that some interesting new posters have joined the other side and that many people do keep an open mind, most of the time.

Ugh.... and this is exactly why I'd held off on making a thread like this.
As I said before, it's not an attack on anyone - I am not writing this because any one person has spurred it on.
VF - If I felt your harsh words were so offensive as to merit some sort of reprimand, I'd likely have penalized you and made it public. However I feel (felt) that I understood where you were coming from, and I chose to delete and let you know about it.
I guess I overbet the value of our past conversations? I'd have thought you might know if I was so truly damaged by your meanie style posting - I would have spoken to you directly.
This post is about the fact that certain people tend to finght constantly, and they tend to carry their own personal dislike with them from thread to thread. It makes for a rather hostile environment - and I have been told by others that it makes anyone outside of the two battling forces feel that they had better stay away.
But whatever... All I wanted was to find a way to make this place more inviting again for everyone. I certainly wasn't trying to engage any of you in a whole new fight.
You can play with your ponies if you like, ill have a beer

I read these words with an open mind.
I can see your position...but I have a few things I'd like to say.
Quote: I just think that a lot of you see the world in one way and one way only - and you have no tolerance for anyone who doesn't share your views.
I have a lot of tolerance, I just dont have any tolerance for ANY one who would pick a fight simply because I said who is anyone to interpret the Bible.
I see the world for how it really IS, and in my years on this earth I have experienced things I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I have experienced things that some will never know and cant even identify.
Because of my experiences I have learned to NEVER judge a person by their looks..but instead I go one what you say and how you say it.
Sincerity will get you everywhere.
I have received nothing but thanks for coming here, quite a few PM's from people that have been here YEARS, tell me that they like my spirit and they like my posts, and that they like that me and certain other new people have livened things up and LIKE going into the OSM forum now because it was BORING before.
Despite the reasons I truly came here was because I had a bone to pick with someone.
Luckily for both him and ME....that thread was locked by the time I made my entrance here...and rather than just slink away back to my dark lawless Myspazz....I stayed on to look around.
I found myself actually enjoying the posts and the people, even if I did view many of them as being far MORE reserved and wearing those rose tinted glasses a bit too much.
I will not apologize for being honest, or stating my beliefs or opinions....true to my values, standards, and morals and moreso being honest with my feelings on things...if I am upset I say so, and I dont hide the fact.
Likewise if I find something amusing, or if I am happy I say that as well. I give compliments when I see something that was awesome and I make sure that person knows.
People who know me personally....GC, VF, Gootch...will TELL you I can be an intense person.
I dont go around intentionally picking fights, as some people have done to me here, but if someone takes up with me I am not going to back down or be made to feel like I should be force fed someones elses opinion. I will defend my position.
Even on the so called "taboo" topics such as religion, politics and sex.
On that same note, I have been known to change my mind or my stance on a position if proper information is given to me. I might even agree.
I will even apologize if I am found to be wrong.
Anyway...I am derailing a bit....LOL
I want to be able to come online and have honest, intelligent conversations with people. I like to meet like minded people and I love a great debate...
For as much grief as I gave this place before ever seeing it, it has slowly changed my mind on the good side of things and I have met some amazing people here.

You know, I had actually hoped that the responses I would get might simply include how other members saw things
I think I'm probably wasting my breath here, but this thread really wasn't directed at any one person. Basically it came about because lately there have been a lot of fights - and by lately I mean Fortress fan, Wesley's return , KD vs the infidels and blablabla.
I'm not a kid, I'm 33 with 2 kids and a hubby - I don't need it explained to me that people don't always chill by the campfire singing happy Jesus tunes. I get all that.
I just think there's more to this place than fighting - and that there's more to each and all of us than just who we are when the little hairs on the back of our necks get prickly.
I find that people get so caught up in the fighting that maybe they stop listening after a while - they just recognize poster X as the enemy and prepare to dispute him/her every time they post.
I notice sometimes that people can get so caught up in their own wars that they don't see anyone else - and what I miss is the feeling that anyone could jump into any discussion without feeling that by posting they are asking to be berated.
I personally don't care so much what people believe (certain situations are exempt to this statement, but I won't get into it) - what interests me here is why people believe the things they do. Even if I think they are full on mad - it's interesting to me to know why they went so crazy
Setitetart - I find nothing wrong in anything you posted... if you read my initial post as somehow saying that the views you've expressed are 'bad' well.. that's just not what I meant.
If anyone else out there took offense to my posting here I hope you can understand that I'm not criticising any one person.
I'm more interested in knowing what other members think about what's been going on - and if there is any feeling that the moderators need to take more action here - be it with the giving or the taking of more QP's - whatever. I guess I was just looking for some kind of feedback
Now I'm just looking for the nearest Exit

I think people become stronger from every event that happens in thier lives.
I also had stuff happened to me that I would only rather happen to me & no one else.
I just deal with it differently.
Everyone deals with it differently.
There are changes happenening here Pandasia .

It's not a matter of controversial vs non-controversial. And it's not about pretending it's a bright sunny day while we make bunnies and sailing ships from clouds. It's about having some ****ing respect for other people's opinions and beliefs.
People seem to think it's only a violation of the COC if an attack on another person is direct, like "so-and-so is an idiot". But an attack can be just as bad or worse because of the poster's tone and attitude. You can call someone an idiot without using the word idiot. And that's exactly what's been happening in the Other Side. The posts have been extremely condescending in tone.
Another thing I see is that too many people insist on having the last word. The threads just seem to go on and on forever. I kind of remember when most threads would just sort of fizzle. Eventually people realized they had presented their side of the debate and had nothing more to add. Going beyond that point becomes an argument, not a debate. It becomes an "I'm right, you're wrong" contest.
The Other Side has become like a war zone. I read very little of it these days because it's become downright stressful. Why the hell would I want to subject myself to that?
OK, so some people like it better this way. Well some people thrive on controversy and chaos also. Simply disagreeing and having a civil debate is one thing. Mass chaos that affects anyone who dares get near the battle zone is quite another thing.
