China The Superpower

China is indeed the fastest growing economy in the world. It may soon surpass the U.S. if it continues its pattern of growth. This acceleration can be attributed to many things, the latest of which, is being called an automotive copyright scandal. I will look for more information covering this but while I do here is what the CIA website has posted about China's economy. This information should be current as of 2003.

{copied from website}
In late 1978 the Chinese leadership began moving the economy from a sluggish, Soviet-style centrally planned economy to a more market-oriented system. Whereas the system operates within a political framework of strict Communist control, the economic influence of non-state organizations and individual citizens has been steadily increasing. The authorities switched to a system of household and village responsibility in agriculture in place of the old collectivization, increased the authority of local officials and plant managers in industry, permitted a wide variety of small-scale enterprises in services and light manufacturing, and opened the economy to increased foreign trade and investment. The result has been a quadrupling of GDP since 1978. In 2003, with its 1.3 billion people but a GDP of just $5,000 per capita, China stood as the second-largest economy in the world after the US (measured on a purchasing power parity basis).{copied from website}

Ok there are some things to think about here:

1. China has a third of the entire world's population.

2. With a third of the world's population it has recently quadrupled its GDP.

3. China has no states, no religion, and one law. Communism.

Any questions?

random stuff

3. China has no states, no religion, and one law. Communism.

No questions per se, but I have a few comments.

1) The world's population is ~6 billion; China's is ~1.2 billion.  A lot of people, yes.  A third of the world, not quite.

2) ~

3) "No states": China is highly decentralized.  In the West, we tend to think of it as a monolithic entity, but it's not.  The regional units are called provinces.  There are enormous differences between various geographical and cultural regions in China (I don't have the energy to go look up the specifics right now, though; forgive me).  Even the language varies -- there are tons of different dialects.  Aside from that, I don't get the point of "no states."  The US is a federal system.  So is Russia.  Britain isn't.  Point?
"No religion":  no freedom of religion, you mean?  Some religions and religious practices are permitted.
"One law.  Communism.":  The Chinese Communist Party is not to be confused with communism.  The economic growth is in part due to the party permitting entrepenuership and capitalists into the country.  Its ideology has been moving away from pure communism since Mao's death.  The real problem is that the law does not apply to the CCP.  Leaders above the law = badness.

Nope.  I double-checked the reference on this.  China's population is indeed 1.275 billion according to a comparative politics book published this year.  The two billion figure may be coming from a combination of China and India (pop. 1.09 billion).

China has nukes too, so lets hope that nothing like that happends. A war like that would mean destruction of the world as we know it.

Is Fear A Deterrent?

What in all the world brings safety to millions? Is it a hidden arsenal of stockpiled nuclear warheads? Is it because these weapons are able to reach anywhere in the world? Is it the devastation they are capable of?

What sort of threat brings peace? Do I tell another country to leave me alone or they will face the wrath of a hundred thousand tons of tnt? Will I gain their respect by forcing them to keep at bay?

Is it fear that holds us from the brink of destruction? Is it fear that commands respect? Is it fear that allows my children to sleep safely at night in their cozy american suburb?

How can fear do more than propogate itself? Is fear all that we have to fear? I don't know the answer. If ask another man, who does not speak my language, to not hurt me do I force him away or ask him politely?

What if I spoke to a chinese in my native language and he doesn't understand a word I say? What if I simply point to a nuclear missile with a "V" in my eyebrows? Am I to belive he will understand and respect me now?

I say, "No". I donot believe that stockpiling nuclear missiles is any kind of deterrent. There are people in this world who would willingly hurt both you and your loved ones. Each man and woman has a responsibility to look out for others who have loved ones as well. If we all do our part then we can defeat the fear that governs our modern day world. It should be unspoken. I donot need to be told to stop a person I see as a terrorist murderer.

Bjorn190 is right. If we launch ours then they launch theirs. What then? What home will we have to go back to when the war is over? What air will we breathe for the sigh of relief that comes from victory? As I have said before, it is all about the little guy. Average, every day, normal people, who work for a living make the difference. It starts with every individual and ends with a world where our children can grow up in safely.

It is of course all very complicated. Basically, the scarcity of resources combined with the hard- or ununifiable interests of different groups lead to the use of power to distribute those resources.

*****************************************
An example: Imagine that 2 soldiers in a war are badly injured, and made their way to the field doctor. They both nead a transfusion to live, but there is only one bag of the appropriate blood type left. Who should live and who should die? One is an officer and claims he should live because he has higher rank. The other is a regular footsoldier but has a family and claims he should live because of his family.

The doctor doesnt know what to do, and being undecided can't give the blood to any of the two. Suddenly the footsoldier reaches into his backpack and pulls out a gun. And suddenly, as power comes into play, there is no more doubt. The footsoldier lives and the officer dies.
*****************************************

Power beats morality in some cases. But things can be better. When people fight, there is a winner and a loser; 2+2=4. When they cooperate, both win; 2+2=5.

I personally belive increased communication to be a part of the solution, especially the internet. The "Golden Shield" of China (cencors & monitors their internet) is a worrying factor, but at least they are using the internet. Maybe in time they will allow a more free internet, who knows?

I feel that 3 of the most important innovations of the previous century where: Penicillin (saving hundreds of millions), the nuclear weapons (making war a no-gain scenario - yet a moment of madness could destroy the world), and the internet (greatly enhancing communication).

The thing is.. you as an individual can get killed just as much from a knife or a gun as you can from a nuclear weapon. Actually, the chances are higher for knife- or gun- related deaths than that you will get blown up by a nuclear bomb.

But now that we have the ability to destroy the world quickly (not slowly via normal pollution), we have to assume the responsibility to achieve lasting peace. And by peace I don't mean just the absence of conflict, but also the presence of justice. Peace may no longer just be something worth striving for, but actually a neccesary condition for survival.

And I think we can do it
