I'm still curious what the numbers are.  If it get 20 quality posts, do I get a new red star?  How's that work.

Otherwise, I really don't pay attention to stars but to see how long a person has been here.  I don't even pay attention to the red ones, becasue everyone has 2.  The quality post count is nice, though.  That let's me see who has really quality ideas, and makes me try and find these posts to see what that idea was.

So the system is 50/50.  And it also seems like once you get so many stars, they aren't a big deal anymore.  After I got my custom avatar, I didn't bother to check my post count everytime I made a post.

Well, if you are, she would have skipped your message, and you won't get an answer anyway.  :-)

Anyway, my definition of a quality post versus a poor post would be based on the quality of an argument, not on the actual opinion being argued for.

For example:

"Dungeon rules!  Wooooo!!! Rampart sux!!!"

That would not be a quality post. I guess it wouldn't get a penalty either, but it certainly wouldn't get a quality point and isn't going to change anybody's mind.

Now, a post that backs up it's opinions with reasons would be much better.

"I prefer Rampart over Dungeon because I like having the treasury for extra income and Gold Dragons are faster than Black Dragons, so I have the initiative in combat against Dungeon."

This post wouldn't get a quality point from me either, but it's a much higher quality post than the other example.

You'd have to really impress me to get a quality point, but everyone should strive to make all of their posts worthwhile to read anyway.

Well, the yellow star system has gone down a little. I mean some people have grabbed a lot of stars by saying nonsense. The red star system is what probably should have been here in the first place. Posts can mean nothing at all sometimes, like hits on a website.
The yellow stars will never leave this board I believe. Perhaps the moderators saw the yellow stars weren't much anymore. Expecially when I see Incubus's 5 stars. I ain't jealous, I just think he didn't get there by posting the goods stuff. No offense either, Incubus, if you read this. Just a thought, perhaps its wrong, perhaps its a little right.

The chicken or the egg?

Although I haven't been here as long as some people have, I find that Heroes Community was ONCE a nice place to come and read about heroes. I am disappointed to find that over the months, certain people have lowered the standards of the board greatly and there was a period where I wasn't interested in coming here because there were less interesting threads to read.

This is still happening now and if I didn't love this game so damned much then I'd probably never come back to the board at all. But hell, you can't just let good things gurgle down the sinkhole, so I've started to come here more often in the hope that maybe I can help bring that nice feeling back. Sometimes I do the opposite I know, but that's me, I get hot under the collar pretty quick and have a bad habit of speaking my mind before I think.

LadyLily, the fact that you are concerned about the red stars show that you are a person worth listening to and I always read your posts. One person once said 'welcome to the "no quality point family"' which was really sad because he was proud of his post count, but didn't seem to care that his posts were not even worth one measly quality point. This is the sort of thing that bothers me, it seems like you get welcomed into a group of average, yet numerous posters and pointed out for being a bit more thoughtful. LOL if I had my way, I'd smack some ass and teach a few of these people the difference of humour and respect!

But then again, that's my mouth talking, not me, LOL.

And Lord Woock, (I spelt it right! Yay!) is my opinion about your posts really worth that much to you? Do you post your stuff for the approval of me? You'll find that you'll feel much better if you post for yourself. Let people know what you think, regardless of their opinions, don't curb yourself just to squeeze in with a few. Get out there and speak your mind (intelligently of course) and have fun! Who knows, you just might change someone's mind....

And no, you are not skip material, lol.

*smile*

Yes, you're great at warping someone's words. Good for you.

I'm not saying to post good things to impress me in particular, I honestly don't give a word I'm not allowed saying.  But really, if someone never has anything good to say, people are just going to start skipping over that person's posts. I don't think anybody wants to be that person.

Good idea checking for quality idea's ;)

I havn't really been here that long as you can see on the number of posts I've made, but I like it a lot, both the relatated and the more serious posts are fun to read. The system with the stars complement eachother very good. If someone has 5 gold stars but 2 or less red, it really seems like that person is more of the have fun type, and few or none gold kind of shows that this person takes it a little more serious. So as I said the two systems complement eachother quite well..

And I havn't read a post yet that I don't think belong here, and I've read most of the posts written for about 3 months back in time by now.

And I want to thank the people making this possible.

New star system...

OK, here's my two cents about this...
Last time I said something under this thread I lost quality point however in amazing way I got it back.

Now those people who think that I'm posting this only to get some stars or something like that, stop reading here.
I gotta post something here as this thread is rated as "interesting".

I still don't care about stars.
However I try to understand the logic behind the system because I feel it has somehow affected this whole board. There some people already blaming that there are now the respected posters (with quality points) and those lower level ones (without quality points).

So I thought a minute this whole thing and I found this thread to be pretty funny. I respect moderators because they're doing fine job here but you gotta admit that this starsystem could be better...

I dediced to post this idea of revamped starsystem...
You can take it as a new better system, new system that is made by me just get some attention or as a joke.
It didn't took long to figure this whole system out and I gladly hear every critic against this system and I'm sure there are going to be alot or nobody even notices this...

Here's how it goes:

First, everybody starts with one star. Someone (read moderator) said that this way there would be away to take some stars as penalty away if there would be some stars already at beginning. Two stars is possibly two much however because if we see how slowly penalties are taken it could take forever lose them all unless one is complete jackass and would post messages just threatening people and one would have to be banned because of this. However banning right away would make this red starsystem obsolete.

If we look now how many posts I have and how many of them are quality you notice that I have posted over 200 posts and have one quality point. This means that from my posts there are 0,5% of quality posts. Does this mean that all my other posts are good, average and crap?
Yes, it means that. So basically all posts but truly  different are treated the same way. So if I did post something good 100 times and I had one crappy message I don't get more stars? Or I posted 100 times crap and only one good message I don't get penalty?
Come on...this way is there any red star system at all?

How about this kind of system:
There are five different kind of posts types...
(There are places that rules could be more accurate and more restrictive like Altar of wishes.)

- Bad post
(Includes posts that are directly against issues that are mentioned as marks of good behaviour in upcoming FAQ)
[-1 penalty applied directly from single post,
read Steep_Descents message at Necropolis ideas thread page number 14 and learn what this means]

- Skip post
(Post that doesn't can't be even treated as true message but more like chat line. There's no real opinion or anything important isn't said. It's basically same to skip this whole post than read it. Also messages that aren't involved with the game, this community or gaming world at large)
[-1 penalty applied if enough these kinds of messages are posted. It could like -1 from 20 posts of like these or something like that. No more rushes for yellow stars either]

- Average post
(Most of the posts are like these. There isn't anything groundbreaking however it contains one's opinion and it contains some sort of reason behind the arguments one is trying to do)
[There's no penalty or quality added, but if one acts in friendly way and posts only average posts he can gain +1 quality point. (There's never too many friendly people out there)]

- Good post
(There's some new views, suggestions or opinions that are well reasoned and also one is ready to listen other people and their ideas. There isn't really one bright idea that steps up from the crowd but other people are ready to listen as it feels one has something important to say)
[+1 quality applied if enough of these kinds of messages are posted. It could work like skip post but in positive way]

- Great Post
(This is the ultimatum. Post that puts twist'n'turn into thread and make other peoples socks turn in their feet. There are new ideas or old ideas are treated in new way that nobody has before thought or at least not posted them.
[+1 quality directly added from single post]

I know this system would take more time of moderators than the current one but at least it could tell people which way to go.
There should be pointed out in those messages when one gains either penalty or quality that into which one of the five different post types it belongs.

Comments?
Let me guess...

Sha_Men, just read your post. Here are some thoughts.

¡§Someone's candy maybe poison to others¡¨. Forget who said this. Nevermind, I agree with it. As u can see, ppl in the community come from various background, in different age group and obvious have different likings except all play homm. So some may be more involved with strategic aspect of games, some opt for creatures/town creation and posting, some prefer talking other unrelevant issues or even talking nonsense. As to me:
________________________________________________________
Every opinion or idea will add more flavour to the community should it be a genuine opinion/idea¡K¡K¡K.
________________________________________________________

Hmm, I guess communication is more of an art than science. Sha_Men, I agree with your ¡§bad post¡¨ and ¡§great post¡¨ idea. (ha, that would be the current system. )
I¡¦ve seen that Steep_Descents post, it¡¦s a really bad one and if I am/were the moderator, I would give ¡V1 penalty to it as well. And the great posts are really great, or at least inspiring or well thought and worth reading.

But for the skip post, average post and good post, it would be very difficult to tell and different ppl may have different ideas about this. So I got a little conservative about it.

I don¡¦t quite understand these passages. But I guess quality point to some extent reflect the opinion and views of the one who gives that and may be subjective/objective or not. I guess the quality point has nothing to do with statistics or mathematics or science which I am poor at.

BTW, I won't judge ppl by quality point. I respect ppl who respect me at the first place and shown respect to himself/herself and others.

Okay one flaw. How long exactly would it take to get those quality points back? People may even make a new idenity on the boards just to get those points back. People sometimes have good ideas, and other times just to agree. And we're tryign to average this up?
It makes sense that there is no "norm" or "curve" in human nature. Everyone is unique and so are their ideas. Even if the basis is that same, it is unique for that one person. You could say that every idea is wonderful, a jewel in itself, but that would be goign to far. Averaging in the bad and good posts, along with total, may exclude the person. Would you say one excellent post is worth 100 bad, and very stupid posts? No one would see the good pars, just the bad.
Another idea instead of the red stars, or along with it, is have a section for the really good posts. Somewhere so people can understand who has the quality ideas. It'll be an option for peple to read those posts, and may or may not make people feel bad or excluded when they have very little or no red stars. Do you understand what I mean?
This post, I must say, has been very long and not very flowing, but I think a lot of ideas has been stressed.

Just a question

I came across a situation where a poster used another identity to insult someone else. Now this post should be given a penalty, but will the person who actually made it be penalized as well? They've even said that they use these avatars strictly for flaming purposes, which I find is wrong. What do the moderators do about this?

Like in the real world reliability is important.

If someone is labelled well, a new poster could look at that person and say, "Hey!  He's an experienced person who knows what they are talking about.  I can rely on what he says."

Just remember it isn't a race on who has the most stars or posts.  With this you can ask a question and expect a good answer from a person who has been recognized to have given good answers in the past.

It doesn't make you better (or worse) than the rest; it just reflects on what and how you said things in the past.

Another thought to add into this conversation.
I've seen that most of the quality posters write crazily long posts. And I was thinking, aren't some of the greatest things said in history are really just a few lines a piece? What if Incubus wrote something that made a country revolt, just becuase his words were inspiring? Okay, maybe not him but...the point is still there. Thsoe few lines had soemthing worth listening to, but he still would get no quliaty point. I guess he would have to add 50 more lines to it to even be considered for a quality point. Why is that? Legnth really doesn't matter at all, at least to me. It's the point they get across. Is it the idea of the story, or how it is writen? More or less based on opinion, it all is, but still....
Shae_Trielle, your very right. Sorry I didn't reply until now but....ideas keep comign into my head. This board isn't like what it used to be, and I haven't been here that long. Further more, some people just loose their heads and talk with no real purpose.
Oh well, now I've lost my train of though on that one.
You all get my point, so why not give that President guy on Independence day a quality point for his long speach. (Now I would feel really, relaly dumb if nobody saw that movie.)

Lady Lily...

I somehow noticed that you don't like long post. I try to be quick now then. First of all I have gained some quality points and god knows why. Maybe it's because I write long messages. However this is all because I usually have something to say and it's more than "I hate that!" and stuff like that. I'm not native english speaker or writer and this often means that I have to find ways to express myself another way than native english speaker. I don't know some words or expressions and I can't use short cuts that people understand what I'm saying.
Also in nature I could be said that I'm cautious person, not shy. I randomly say anything withing strangers but in this kind of place like this community my speaking/writing frenzy opens fully. I can say that I hold my words even here as I have better to do than wrote messages here. However as I have been in the net at the sametime doing something else I have also liked to visit here and write some messages.
If we look long messages here they aren't really so long. If you want to really say something that everybody truly understands it is needed that one tries to explain what he is meaning exactly. I have seen many threads/posts here that are gone badly as people haven't even understand what one has really said. Then all others has reacted and as we know it's possible that whole thread can go deeply into some subject before the first poster ever gets back to clear this mistake.
Finally I can say why all my messages end up being so long like this one. It's maybe because I kinda started feeling that this is partly my home and there are people I respect and want to express my feelings and thoughts to those people.
I'm sorry Lady Lily if you find example my posts too long but I can say that I'm not praying for quality posts far from it but somehow I always enjoy myself longer messages than thousand small messages.

Okay first of all *I* dont hate you. sure you have a few grammar mistakes here and there but ::WHO CARES?!?:: I surely dont, I mean the writing is completely understandable. second, I *KNOW* everybody has a different attitude has different oppinions etc etc etc.

Incubus' style  of writing is short-quick-&-informative. he also puts in a joke or two in between and I personally like that, it's cool to giggle here and laugh there. he may not be the best at expressing feelings but he always states his honest opinions, evenm If i dont like his oppinions its good that he doesnt hide or lie thats honesty.

incubus has many posts because he has been around for a long time and he, as he said himself, posts on  many topics unless they seem irrelevant. he makes his posts shorter than many but that , as I said was simply his style. if inky doesnt enjoy reading long posts then he doesnt have to read them.

Sha-men's posts are longer because of what he said, and not to mention its just his style of writing, informing and expressing. I dont see why you guys have to flame each other, you feel you want to get  the lasyt word maybe but It doesnt really matter.

there are people in this community thta I personally hate and  want to wrench their guts and stick a grenade up their behinds (without the pin). but none of u have seen my posts against those people... why ? because there are none. I even talk to these people sometimes but I will not mention them. the thing is that I have to live around them and I do and I cant kick them from HC only start a flame contest so What in the world IS the point? I dont like them but I dont care either and theres no way of making them go away so why stress yourself and get flamed?

give me a reasonable explanbation and I will let u flame as much as u want
