ToHistory

Just a curious question for our die-hard players..........

What exactly was it that brought you to ToH?

I'll start.

I was a first-time pc owner and was utterly addicted to FRPGs--specifically MM7.  This game genre held an immense attraction for me because to me, it was like being able to play a sort of AD&Dish game without having to depend on having a DM and a group of dedicated players to keep a game going.

I had been an expert on the 'original' M&M from the long gone NES days, and after buying my first pc MM7 was the first game I saw that I just 'had' to have.

I played it, joined a now long-gone 3DO message board (anyone remember Slash?), learned all the tips and tricks, and replayed it so many times and so many different ways I lost count.

Eventually, I convinced a good friend of mine to give the game a shot.  In return, he rode my ass about 'this new game':  Heroes Of Might And Magic 2.

I borrowed it from him, thinking that even though it was a 3DO game it would never hold a candle to MM7 since it was a "spinoff".  Still, I gave it a shot since my friend was now addicted to MM7 (thanks to me) and I felt sorta obligated to him to try something he recommended.

So I took it home and installed it.

Needless to say, I was immediately and utterly addicted.

I LOVED IT.

Next thing I know, we were playing vs one another via modem (long distance, talk about hellish phone bills).  We played, taunted the hell out of one another at work (we worked together) and then played and played some more--trying our best to outdo one another for bragging rights at work the following day.  Our friendly competition soon turned into a fierce battle for bragging rights at work and our trashtalking became so prominent that we even managed to 'seduce' several other coworkers into joining our nightly games.

Then came the wondrous day when I found the Zone. I had AB by then.  Under the name O_Negative, I played random maps against new opponents like there was no tomorrow.

There was a downside, though.........seemed like 4 out of 5 games that I played ended up unfinished.  Players would drop and not come back, start a game and leave immediately because they didn't like their 'draw', see they were about to lose and just disappear, etc......

That's when I met BrightBlade, my oldest and (still) best online friend.  He suggested ToH.  I wasn't much into playing for points or glory but I figured the structured environment there would at least provide a pool of more 'serious' players.  Funny thing, I thought I was SO good at the game, lol.  I had my ass handed to me so many times during my 'initiation' that "Great game, thanks for the lesson!" seemed to become my trademark phrase.

The rest is history.......I stuck around because I liked having friendly, dependable competition.

I'm still here because of all the incredible friends I've made along the way.

I'll be around until heroes dies (I doubt this will ever happen) or there is no reasonable way in which to meet and play people online (I doubt this will ever happen, too).

Heroes is ancient now, but ToH still thrives and new members join every day.  Most of them are great folks who love the online head-to-head competition as much as I do.  I hope to enjoy a game with each of them.

And I look forward to H5 and many, many more games with old friends

Edit:  Thanks, Ves, for everything

Lets see

I didnt know nothing about Heroes & i didnt cvare for those types of RPG like M&M.
I liked the FF type RPG with a passion.
After living in shelters & finally I lost my job & everythang seemed lost I moved in with my mom then my aunt with a die hard player that my Uncle was.
He just bought a com customized & his brother also gave him a few burned games & one was Heroes 2.
It was the first one we tried & we forgot about the other, it was that addicting.
I fell in love with it.
We bought all the exansions & I enjoyed making maps & playing 1-1 hot seat & the stories.

Heroes 3 made it's debut & we had to get that & we loved it more.
After about a few months I had to move out of my Aunts house for reasons & I moved into a friends house with my brother & met a beautiful girl & we hit it off quick.

About 2 yrs later she ran off with another guy & got herself pregnant the same day she met him & I fell into a severe depression after that, I bought my very first com in 2001 early & got a dial up internet of AOL.
Of course I had my SOD installed hehe.

That was when I got an email from Monty (The Old One) WHo opened a tournament called ENcounters with great ideas & I loved it till this day.
It was just a random emai.
I looked at TOH before hand in season 2 early but I couldnt find any games or play in any tournies so I played in encounters.

I met a few good people including my best bud Joes & his father.
Monty is one of the nicest people on here I know.
Even tho his name is Edward the third, few dont know that Ed is not his name hehe.

Jiels taught me the basics of the game & we became best buds.

Mid season 3 I made it to TOH & when I was new I actually emailed players play & Wiggy played one of my first games.
Then I made friends with Mocara, who taught me more advanced strategies & he was like my idol on here.
He also taught me never to betray TOH with a few others so I despised Kitten & Ravyns tournaments never even looked in there.
I made a name & I am not a great player,I have not even played over 100 games but my honour earned me so much respect.
I went through so much during my history here & many shared so much of what I went through on here, good or bad.

I made enemies, I made friends, but even tho I was despised by some, they respected my skills & honour in this game.
just like Valky,Somewhere down the road he resents me but I respect his skills.

For over a yr many knew me as the nicest person on here, until about over a yr I flipped one day with Uncoated Titan, & Andi,Rych,Motor etc got me to be more how can I say, of an arse then my peaceful nature.

Then after a time in the zone UT got me so mad I flipped & I swore & everyone was shocked lol.

I wish I could go back  to how i was.

Thise days are gone now & I am glad I shared at least part of it with yalls.
I met someone on here I love to death & I hope I can do my best to make us happy.
I met some friends in real life, alot of good people.
I want to meet more also.

Thanks Rob & everyone else & ROb, Soon hehe .

hummm, there's no way I will ever make a story like the ones before me...

I don't remember everything in such details... What I do know is that...

One of my friend had Heroes 2 and when we were at his place we'd play that game a bit, I loved it and for me it never was enough... but I did not had the game, wasn't sure of how long it would take for me to get bored of it. Anyway, I bought the game and began playing a lot. It was tons of fun, I prefered playing Hot Seat even if in a way I knew I had better chances to win than my friends...

Then my friend bought heroes 3, I was a little stuiped and had no clue it was out, when I saw it... I knew I had to buy it, so I did.. This one I was even more addicted to.. I followed the same pattern as H2, but since I bought the game when it was not that old... After quite a few months I'm not sure how, but I went to play online. It was kind of tricky cuz I had dial up and it wasn't exactly making my sister happy that the phone line was busy for hours. Anyway, first game I played was for toh... I didn't played badly, but it was a lost... but from what I remember it wasn't a total decapitation... But that guy I played thought me a lot and I learned fast how to be an average toh player...

unfortunatly I have played since then(I think it was season 1 or 2) and haven't managed to become a good player

So after my 1st season in toh, I asked my 2 hot seat friends to join it... They played and all, but didn't seemed as addicted to it as I was, but still... It was great to have people to talk to and all. My 3rd season I started a clan and asked my 2 friends to join it, the 4th place changed a few times, but eventually it became Overlord1. He was a great guy and by now I knew that if we did a clan war on a certain map, it depended on me and if it was on another kind of map it was Overlord, but it was great fun...

After that season both my friends stopped playing heroes 3... Except a few games here and there.. I also slowed down on heroes... but I was checking Heroes 4 when it would be released... not a frank success... A few months later I came back to heroes 3 and I am here to stay. Can't wait for Heroes 5 to arrive, new marvelous game, I want to see if they will manage to make it as interesting as H3, well balanced...

I remember the first moment with heroes..

I was in russia and my mothers sisters daughter was sick, and I had to go visit her.. after saying hello i noticed a cool looking game on the table and asked if i could try it.. Well, I started playing and it was incredible. One of best feelings ever. When it was time to go i started crying ( i think i was about 8) So.. I visited the sister alot during those couple of weeks I was in the area.. After i went back home I had to get my hands on that game.. I got my first comp, and I got heroes.. then came heroes3.. and thats was even more better--

Then a few years ago I introduced the game to T.T, I was sure hed like it cz we had kind of same taste in things.. He loved the game and I tought him the basics, and we played alot..hundreds of games who knows.. Heroes 4 came out and I was third in FInland to get it ..rushed back home and played it for 20 hours..and then i got internet...and thats how it all started...

toodles

As many of u read from masg-1-1's post , I was introduced to homm(3,4) by msg-1. I once visited his house years ago , and he showed me all these games , but one was better than the else , HOMM3. He tought the basics to me the next days , and I really enjoyed that game those days.
I bought the game myself , even i didnt have PC , because i knew i would get it one day and then i could play it all night. So i one beautful day got my own PC , and I started to play homm3 by myself( i didnt anyway have the internet , or homm4 even it was realeased about those days). Then one day msg-1 had bought homm4 and he brought the paper thats in the homm4 package to school with all creature stats and stuff and showed it to me. So I bought homm4 the next day and i was taken again. We played dozens and dozens of games with msg-1 in hotseat. He always beat me , but it didnt matter cuz the playing was so fun. Then 6 motnhs later i got the internet and here I am. I have also played as much homm4 games with the fellow mnc , who lives near me. I still today play with him homm3 once in a while.

I had just gotten the game and played singleplayer for about a week when I decided to give the zone a shot.Growing frustrated at the question:"Whats your ToH handle,"I finally caved in and signed on.

After some more or less successful ToH games I met a guy called LichKing. He made some comment about Dragonlance books(My nick being BrightBlade)and I invited him in for a game.We must have played a hundred games together since then

This was back in 2000 and I still find myself coming back to Heroes3 even today. No game has ever held my interest for this long and if it wasn't for ToH in general, and LichKing in particular,I don't think this game would have lasted me 3 weeks.

Once upon a time I had the most pathetic computer ever, it was barely good enough to be called a calculator BUT it had just enough juice to run Heroes 2  Even though the computer player would take 30 minute turns... I was still hooked! I played it time and time again.. and then came Heroes 3!!

My husband Yawacko immediately started playing online, but I was more timid - preferring to 'hone' my skills vs. the AI first  But he kept telling me that the only way I'd learn to play online was to actually try it...

Those of you who know me, know I'm too stubborn to immediately take his advice, so instead I watched him play. (It took all of one game to prove that he was right, I really didn't have a clue)

Finally tho, i gave in and started my online career! And of course I started in the only place there was to play - the "Simyar" tourney hehe

I won my first game, and the power rush was incredible and I played like a freakshow --not as hard as Zud of course-- for years to come. In fact i was the first female General (no no please, hold your applause )

I met some fantastic people from all over the globe thanks to ToH - and can't thank Rob enough for giving us all such a rockin' tourney!

so there!

Heroes of Might and Magic

I bought HoMM (1) around 1994 not exactly sure running it on my IBM 486/sx25 with 512K ram and loved it so
Some time later Heroes2 came along with mulitplayer and I joined the Oracal league in it's beginning and played 2 and 3 players matches often with Beowulf in New Zealand and a player in England with me in the middle in Canada. Beltway was the map of choice but what usualy happened was 2 players would have a huge fight and then the 3rd player would run in and demolish the winner of that battle to win the game
A young player by the name of Vesuvious quietly rocketed up to the top and quickly became a top player. Some time later he started TOH
and the rest is History .
Unfortunately I never played more than a few H3 games on TOH as I was enjoying playing too much with my 1st son . Oddly enough we always played allies against AI and hardly ever went head to head.
H4 came along but quickly was removed from our network and apart from going back to H3 localy we waited again for H5 from it's first rumours to now...a week away and we will BOTH be on TOH so please if you want a 2 vs 2 lets do it!

Well as some know I started with the original MM (dos) and it used 5 1/4" floppies if that dont date me I dont know what will.  Loved the series until after I saw H1 come out.  It was a complete change of ideas, to have just a single player MM based RPG to a Multi-player online game on par with at that time neverwinter nights.

I played a few games but never really amounted to much then H2 came out and well I really liked that the weakest creature sometimes wins a fight (sprites) I played so many different ones (I dont remember them), but H3 came out and Rob had ToH on stable ground so I signed up the first ones I played with was Yawacko, Pandora, JB239, Tim554, LichKing, and many more.  I was points fodder for many of them on their way to honor and glory while I did rank in the top 100 at one point in time. By this time I was known as one not to let me play Necro cuz I would just dominate your ass with it... So with my regular time being able to play was being cut short I decided to Volunteer on a regular basis for ToH. Some nights I remember sitting on the Zone acting like a 'cop' of some sort to everyone else (being on ToH) that not many want to play with me anyways so then I spent 1 year working with Rob as manual updater, and divisions coordinator.

Then with Rob's permission I helped to start the Crossroads ToH subtourney (thanks in special part to The_Wiz) which was a totally different way of playing H3, and it evened out the skilled vs. the newbie player to some degree.

Then (3D0) decided to come out with H4 (which as I have said before H5 is what H4 was supposed to be) turned me off so bad I quit, not to mention I had a major software company to run left me no time.

I welcome H5 as a new opportunity to catch up on some lost gaming time as now I sit at a wireless hotspot on the beach watch babes go by and playing the Demo H5 till I get the full version... AHHH LIFE IS GOOOOOD

Memories

I guess I must have read about HoMM I in a gaming magazine and I picked it up. I also had King's Bounty (Sort of what HoMM grew out of.) somewhere in there too. Anyway I played it a lot and then moved on to HoMM II when it came out but didn't really play online until HoMM III. I remember doing some sort of search for the game online, found ToH and signed up thinking how much fun it would be to play against others... and got my butt kicked! LOL I went 0-14 before I finally got my first win. A couple guys helped teach me a bit and slowly but surely I got better. After a bit I got to know Rob and as ToH grew I figured it had to be a daunting task running and updating it so I asked if he could use some help. I think he might have been a bit reluctant to let anyone else access to his baby ( ) but the reality of things was that the tournament was growing quickly. So I began manually updating the player lists which were starting to come in at a dozen or more a day. I also started adding ICQ numbers to the rankings page so people could find games easier. Shortly after that Rob had one of his photo trips to Hawaii and I got my first shot at manually updating the rankings. As a few out there can attest, what a nightmare! LOL At some point I couldn't put as much time into it anymore and thankfully some other players stepped in to help him. Somewhere in there Rob had the first tournament hotseat session too and I went up for the weekend.

After that I just continued to play and got to know so many great people (I'd name them but there are so many and I know I'd forget a few.) and eventually took a couple noobs under my wing (Rad1025 I hope to see you playing again!) and taught them the same as those kind folks who helped me.

I came and went from the game a couple times over the course of HoMM IIIs run. The first time I moved out to LA but came back when they figured out random templates. The second time was due to not wanting to be playing in case the hot blonde neighbor babe happened to come by. (She lives with me now but after 2 years I'll be damned if I know how that book will turn out.) So here I am now 7 years or so later impatiently waiting for HoMM V's release and looking forward to seeing my friends again. Peace, good luck and most of all have fun all!

BTW, I know we have clans but does anyone else miss Divisions?

Well I was a padawon learner from Tim554, he was the master, check the best thread when even Frank himself admits that

Below is taken from the HOMM3 tactics thread.

Quote:

14) How to play with Necropolis

Hopefully I will get the real expert on the subject to post a beneficial to all of us tactic topic about playing Necropolis...

I can already tell you things not well known about necropolis.

1) Squeleton transformers can provide you with bone dragons if you put in it any type of hydras and dragons ! Chaos, red, green, gold, black, azure if you wish... will provide you with bone dragons.

2)Vampire lords can only drain hit points from living things! That means, don`t enter a fight with 10 vampires lords against horde water elemental... or any elementals. Tower has some none living troops too like gargoyles and golems. Of course you can`t drain any necro troops either. So if your vamps depends on draining to win a fight, chose your targets wisely.

3) Ghost dragons can`t age troops that vampires can`t drain...

ok TIM554 now it`s your turn... I want to see 4) 5) 6) 7) etc)...
