Take a Sin, Leave a Sin

The seven deadly sins of Christian tradition are:
* Pride
* Envy
* Anger
* Sloth
* Avarice (Greed)
* Gluttony
* Lust

If you got to, or had to, "retire" one of these sins, which one would get the axe?  What would you choose to replace it?  Why?

Edit in response to Lews:  Consistency with Christianity is not a requirement.

Well, I would certainly throw out the three most silly ones: Lust, Anger and Sloth. My replacement suggestions would be Intolerance, Ignorance and Hypocrisy.

But I´m aware of the fact that my replacements would be quite in contradiction to christian moral.

Religion = Mental Excrement

I'd rather be told what to do by a group of self-prophetic God-like idolized dream-state incarnations of the said sins.

Ah forget all that, let's simply worship a bowl of chocolate pudding!

Khaelo, you mean throw away only ONE sin? Nooo. I'd actually trash the entire list altogether.
And replace it with:
Hmmm... *copies from Lews*
Intolerance
Hypocrisy
Ignorance (more like unwillingness to learn)
Cowardice
Submissiveness
Malice
Arrogance

-only the first that came to my mind-

Of course, I wouldnt call these "sins" deadly, as in some situations they are justified, even welcomed.

Oh yes... Arrogance should definitely be a sin... but I think that's what they meant by pride, rather than meaning normal everyday pride.

Okay, the thing I borrowed this idea from (an online matchmaking service, believe it or not) said one sin.  But, hey, nothing wrong with swapping out the whole list.

Lust is my choice for getting kicked out of the sin bin, and I'd replace it with Dishonesty.  Greed, gluttony, and lust all cover the general territory of "excess," and lust is the most easily abused of the three due to its corrolating associations.  The next one to go would be gluttony, which is really just another form of greed, if I can think of something to replace it.  I agree with Korejora that pride refers to arrogance, so maybe just switch the word, not the general concept.    Close-mindedness comes under the arrogance heading as far as I'm concerned.

You'd be hard-pressed to name a "sin" that is never justified.  But envy comes close, in my opinion.

If I had to pick one, it would be sloth. Nothing is better
than vegging out in front of the TV watching football!
Replacing it with hypocrisy is ok, but really the root of
all sin is ego or the sense of "I", the original sin of

Great thread Khaelo!

I`d kick out lust, and insert ignorance.
However on my list of super-immortal virtues sarcasm would be first.

Actually, I think envy works as a factor for self-motivation in most cases. Behind every "positive role model" people have, stands a notable amount of envy. I wouldnt even put it in the sin list to be honest.

ergo, the individual is a sin. Interesting approach.

* Pride
* Envy
* Anger
* Sloth
* Avarice (Greed)
* Gluttony
* Lust

Exit: Anger, Lust
Enter: Prejudice, Selfishness

Why:
 - Anger: It's not healthy sealing away your anger. It'll come out sooner or later anyway, and then it'll just be worse...
 - Lust: What's wrong with lusting? Lust can make people people strive to improve their situation. And lusting after stuff you can't have, isn't possibly a sin (this is called 'dreaming', right?), so long as you don't actually try to get it by hurting someone else.
 - Prejudice: This, often in a combo with or as a result of ignorance, has been the root of so much evil through the ages. I myself strive every day to kill off all the prejudices I have. And I've begun liking myself a lot more since.
 - Selfishness: This one corrupts all. Power corrupts because the person wielding it thinks more of himself than of the people he has power over. This is the case with most things, I think. Once selfishness comes into the picture, it's corrupted. This is of course "narrow-minded selfishness"; recognizing that your best interests are most likely to lie with the best of your 'group', isn't evil, and should thus not be considered a sin...

Btw, I'd prefer to scrap the whole consept of sin, since it's impossible to say that 'this is universally wrong' when it sometimes can be the only right thing to do, but that's a discussion for another time...

Actually if you base cristianity on how it was practiced in the 1st century under the leadership of the apostles which is how it should be, then there is no such thing as the seven deadly sins. Such a notion is never mentioned in the bible.
The correct term is "Works of the flesh" and there are 15 of them. They are:

1. Fornication
2. Uncleanness (predominantly spiritual uncleanness)
3. Loose conduct
4. Idolatry
5. Practice of spiritism
6. Enmities
7. Strife
8. Jealousy
9. Fits of anger
10. Contentions
11. Divisions
12. Sects
13. Envies
14. Drunken bouts
15. Revelries

The apostle pal goes on to say "As to these things i am forewarning you, the same way as i did forewarn you, that those who PRACTICE such things will not inherit Gods kingdom.

New world Translation.

So anyone professing to be a christian should think twice about throwing anything out. No human is or ever will be qualified to improve on Gods laws.
