the mysteries of life
i have a question
cars can go at a speed of up to 200 km/h
but why???
i have never seen a sign that says "200" or a sign that says "no speed limit". so why are cars able to go this fast
the only positive i can see is that which benifits criminals. they steal a car and hey, it goes really fast
is there something i am missing?
so why are cars able to go much faster than speed limits???
ps. i guess others can post thier questions aswell

If an engine were often being pushed to go as fast as it possibly could, that would be quite bad for the engine. Hence, cars are rarely required to go nearly as fast as their engines can handle.
And then there's race cars...

yes but why does it go that high. why not make cars go a few km over the maximum speed limit and thats it???
and race car yes, but we are talking ever car here

Fast cars can cost more, and people will buy them even though the speed can be utilized only in very limited situations. That's my guess, anyway.

several possibilities
a)because young people like to feel powerful and would pay more to be more powerful
b)deserts?
c)the cars were made in countries without speed limit?
d)emergency (like volcano eruption)
e)jumping across bridges
all these sound pretty stupid except maybe the first one but meh. another reason might be that its not alot harder to make a car with high speed limit and they think, what the heck just put in another 100km/h to impress the costomer

Who said noone makes those cars? Have you tried Trabant (East German car) or Zaporojets (Russian car)? Buy one of them if it makes you happy - they are very cheap. Ride it for some time, then you won't need to ask any more questions like this.

(well in Canada, there aren't any hwys over 100km/hr...
so my car should max out at 140 or something..
(why can I got up to 220??)
I think it's to allow idiots who want to drive that fast to have accidents, riding us of their stupidity.
(problem here is that they usually take out someone who has common sense and a family  )

i am asking why do we have these cars around. if i buy one of those cars that u are talking about, i might me killed by a guy that is going at 200km

Since I've read the original post in this thread I've been thinking of why this is the way it is.
I've come to the conclusion that it's because of the money.
Indeed, people will not buy cars that can only go up to 110 Km/h... The companies that make cars make money buy making cars that go faster and faster... that's what the public want.
So in the end, it's because of human nature and the adrinaline rush we get from going fast. It's sad to think that it's all because of money, but it's always this way: tobacco companies are even worse! They make money off of a cancer inducing product!

how do we stop large corporations, large companies(is that the same) and then the government of allowing our society to be dictated by the all mighty dollard...

I don't think it's "human nature" but I'd agree with Terje's theory's on what's society's fault...
we use to base our economy on trade or service...

well i watched a show about future products and they are trying to make a car that runs on compressed air. it is cheap to refuel and it cant go as fast as modern cars
so anymore mysteries???

I think the technology is out there, but right now the economie runs on petrol and car manufaturers and the government (ours anyway) are making boat loads off the taxes... so why would they change it?

they arent changing it, civilians are.
the guy that is making these cars is doing it to help average joes and to help the environment(these cars only use air remember?). i am all for ths air drvin car. all that is in the news is the prices of running a car
what about a mass bike system???
