There are Pirates, Sea Monsters, Mermaids... New ideas for Water Combat
I have some ideas for new water-based creatures, mostly from D&D:
Dragon Turtle: looks like a giant turtle, only with a Green dragon's head, and it breathes a cloud of super-heated steam Spec. Ab.: Area breath attack (2x3 hexes), immune to spells Lvls. 1-4.
Sea Serpent:No description needed Spec. Ab.: First Strike, no enemy retaliation
Swashbuckler: The enemy of the pirates (Hates Pirates). Otherwise, exactly the same as pirates Spec. Ab.: None
Kraken: Giant octopus that attacks with its tentacles. Spec. Ab.:First strike, 45% Magic Resistance, No enemy retaliation
Giant Squid: Slightly more powerful than the Kraken. Spec. Ab.: First strike, 50% Magic Resistance, no enemy retaliation
Shark: No description needed here either. Special Abilities: First Strike
Sperm Whale: I'm sure you all know what this is. Special Abilities: Hates Krakens and Giant Squids

That's a great idea Shadow_Pheonix! A sea town would be cool. The Hero races would be Merfolk and Tritons, and the Classes would be Water Mage and Ocean Knight.

Giant Sea Spider
Doesn't sounds good, I would replace it with a kapa (a humanoid turtle of japanese origins). Some japanese creatures would look good on heroes.

Water Town:
1.Pirahna School/Pirate (Fish Pond/Ship)
Pirahna eats corpses so when it kills something, it dissappears and cannot be ressurected.
2.Amazon/Merman (Beachside camping ground/Ocean Cave)
Amazon does more damage to males.
3.Mermaid/Giant Crab (City of Pearl/Whale Skeleton)
When Mermaid attacks male unit, it cannot retaliate.
4.Sea Serpent/Kraken (Deep Water/Ship Wreck)
Krakens can spit a paralysing ink.
As you can see there is an underwater and above water town for each level of creature.

there is no japan in homm but i see that point. Introducing a samuristic essence I imagine.
About the sea town. 1 way I see this as workable, is that these are towns sort of seperate from land based. These towns literaly dominate the seas and to have 1 in a map with water, nearly ensures that land based enemies will have their struggles in the water.
Some/SOME of these water based monsters can go on land but they will lose their skill modifier "Sea based"
And yes, heroes can walk on land
The towns can be either ports, or island like provinces. If a hero goes through the town, he can go into his ship, or go onto land without movement penalty.
There would be sea magic, yes most only works in the sea. Like Leviathan.. other spells too.
(Whoever uses our HC ideas without giving us props, you totaly miss out on our employment cuz we only half think in here.. You be suck to take some of our ideas and not the whole picture.)

And all these creatures are going to capture mines, travel thru desert, mountains, caves...
Why not space invaders ?

Cuz, the space brings way to much more to the story line!!
if there was a space addition, thats alot to impact to homm5
Thatrs why its simple to bing in the sea.. They dont take up much space.

how so?
Just consider them like mechanical islands of today, where they do shark studies or mine oil. accept they fight. Theres pros and cons to it, and very few senarios would make them a lead player. But they are always incentive in the seas, and a way to hold fort on water.
Some sea monsters can walk on land, but most canot. (ways to change this ufd

the way i would see it is that they would have to capture a coastal town to produce troops that can walk on land.
this may be a serious disadvantage, because land based troops may conquer any town.
and how would a castle defense against land based troops be arranged in those coastal towns when a sufficient amount of land based troops is not yet available?
i hate to say that some nice ideas don't work (imho sea town is a nice idea) but rather like to find ways how they would. but this time i havn't yet seen a good enough idea to make it work ok nor do i have one myself.
imho the question is not about how nice a sea town type would be but how to make it playable. other than that, all the discussion about the inhabitants of the town is as good as a discussion about neutral sea based creatures, at least from my point of view.

May I remind you that this thread is two years old, and was revived by some new memeber. I didn't expect to see it again.
Nevertheless, the town would work if it was AI/unoccupied only (To start). A hero in a boat from another player could capture it and use it as an outpost and recruit creatures for sea combat. Either that or it could work as a base for water-only maps. I admit there is a lot of fine tuning to do.

[playable]-so far
Quote: has to be a coastal town to produce troops that can walk on land.
No way they live in the sea island castle. It can be connected to land infront of obstacles even, but its not required. Every hero has his Own boat and steed but the boat can be lost when he goes on land. It's hardly a starting town.
Quote: this may be a serious disadvantage, because land based troops may conquer any town
Yes, thatts the point. The 1 sea island town conquers the sea and has buildings that is a map maker, and water magic. (ect)
Quote:
and how would a castle defense against land based troops be arranged in those coastal towns when a sufficient amount of land based troops is not yet available?
1: The castle walls have trenches for about 3-4 feet of water so land, and water based can fight (excluding midget creatures) & its a high terain penalty for others
2: the construction of thier boats are a bit more expensive, but theres water for them enclosed on the deck (with grafic drain like stuff pouring out more water, and the sides level out water at 3 feet) the boats are dam good, all boat makers make it for them, and the hero can upgrade a regular boat in 1 days movement
3: the hero must use 5 spell point and have a starting artifact, or the mage. The artifact, enables them to lower the water when attacking so the boat cant go anywhere but into battle with their boat, or jump out and make a swim for it but that wont happen, they board the boat otherwise the long ranged cant shoot up well and the sea based long range can shoot down with ease.
When attacking
theres a prompt to the AI or enemy Either
A, get raided with long range magic and attacks,
B, board the boat now and fight like a man when sea boats defending, the enemy boards it.
artifacts for migets are up for discuss.. their prolly level 1 or 2 as well as spells

original written by me:Quote: they would have to capture a coastal town to produce troops that can walk on land.
huh, isn't the whole idea of quoting that you don't change the wording, and even more importantly, the idea of another poster? note that i didn't say that a coastal town would be a sea town type. if it was, then it would be useless for the purpose of producing an army of land based creatures.
yeah, the moat could perhaps work for castle defense, at least better than nothing at all, although it would severely restrict the movement of sea creatures.
unfortunately, i didn't quite understand the other solution about.. boat filled with water? if what you meant was a boat on e.g. wheels, and filled with water, then it could lead to some kind of solution, but imho it would look too innovative or even stupid if i actually saw such a boat in a heroes game.
in mythology, the sea monsters, as far as i know, remained in the sea and didn't travel land in some queer inventions filled with water. or did you mean something else?
