You can download *.lod-viewer here.

In a pyramid you can find not 5-level spells only but some of 4-level

Well I made a map with about 60+ pyramids, put cobblestone roads, a logistics hero (kyrre) with movement artifacts and 1000 Archangels, gave him expert intelligence, expert logistics and expert wisdom to boot, I also put some centaurs, you know just so he could use the spell against them , I did this with the RoE 1.0 editor and played on RoE 1.0

I retried 4 times and I got nothing, just kept getting fly, dd, the elementals, frenzy, sacrifice but I got NO fear.

Tough luck I guess

You should try it with 2.0 (Armageddons Blade) or 3.0 (Shadow of Death). As far as i remember, the Fear spell came up with the expansions and especially with the similar speciality of the Azure Dragons. Those were not present on RoE.

Yes, and when doing such tests you should always go to the main menu and start the scenario over instead of using the in-game restart button. Otherwise you'll loop.

I tried to look for that spell in pyramids too... No luck...
Maybe if you change the probabilities in SPTRAITS.TXT or crack the game you will be successful... Still you will not able to use it.

FEAR is 5th level speel featured with Armageddon Blade, granted from the Pyramids but doing nothing (disabled). This problem was removed with the  first AB patch, I though, so from this time you cannot stump on.

The fear effect is widely used in WoG.

I have change the probability of this spell to 10% and Fear is in the game now. But I think this spell is disabled in the source code of the game because one can see Fear in a spellbook but cannot use it (edited: because of 1 byte 0Bh instead of 4h).

so its the same as blind, but 3 levels higher and worse(enemy can move)?

One time I was fighting an azure dragon cliff dwelling and I had about 10 titans in my army.I put all my hope in them,cause I had 15 naga queens but they would be struck first,this happened every time I fought azure's qith naga queens,...what a surprise,the azure,s attacked my titans and killed just 1,but in the next 4 rounds,they died with 1 azure dragon casualty due to lightning spell(140 damage each turn),they frightened my titans 3 times!!!and lost my titans,genies,and 13 nagas..lukilly

the morale of the story: use mighty gorgons! pick fortress! i mean everybody agrees fortress is better than tower, right? RIGHT?

No. Blind is dispelled after the creature stack has been attacked. With fear you get free attacks (like paralyze in H2).

sort of right =)
tower is sort of decent as a town... too expensive... it's my favourite alignment, but IMO the second worst to use...(tower is better than inferno in most circumstances...of course, there are times in which inferno is powerful...just not that many)

if only tower had some strong slow defencive other than golems(like hydra in h2 or dendroid in h3/h5) instead of gargoyles/nagas, it would be a lot stronger town. i know some people who think castle and tower are already equally the most powerful towns in h3. but i think its true only on XL maps with few towns.

btw someone said "fear" will come to wog as a spell, are some more spells going to be added? or will it be possible to make your own?

I have just disassembled the executable file of HoMM III and enabled Fear spell by changing some data fields. I've found out the following:

1) Animation is just like Death Stare;
2) Sound: FEAR.WAV (see HEROES3.SND).

  It was HoMM III RoE Demo (h3demo.exe). Fear spell was replaced by Titan's Lightning Bolt in later versions of the game such as HoMM III SoD

Okay, I see. Thanks. Unfortunately, it's unlikely Slava could use this in WoG since WoG is based on the SoD code and there's a good chance that the code for it in RoE (and RoE demo) wouldn't be completely compatible. That is, if we had SoD source code plus RoE (demo) source code, I imagine it could be used but without it, it probably can't. Anyway, we'd have to ask Slava to be sure.

Perhaps this a bit old post, but no matter. I did some research and found out that in RoE version 1.2 a message about the Fear spell can appear after defeating the guards in pyramid. However, no spell is added to the spell book (even with Expert Wisdom). This message did not occur in the versions 1.0 and 1.1. The readme of the patch 1.3 stated, that the Fear feature was removed, so I did not do any further testing.
