ps. I'm going through every map posted... playing both sides. But I need to play all these maps to finish, and try everything out... and seeing what sorts of feedback are given by players over time. Chances are, that most of these maps will be posted, if they are in h5m form. I just don't want to see v1.5 v1.6 etc.. etc.. having to post a new version every week.

if ubi made heroes move more, mapmakers wouldn't make grass terrain maps. Other terrains suck, because you move like a snail on them, and the game would last for ages!

Hell, that's what all Ubi maps lack! They are not balanced. One player always gets an advantage of sorts. I thought the idea of tournament maps are to make them fun AND balanced. What's the point in having a rated game if players don't have equal starts?
About aesthetics, I agree. Most map look like they were done in a hurry, including floating towns and monsters, objects intersecting with terrain, and general lack of detail.
My map (DML) looked really poor and empty in ver 1.0 I think, however, I worked on it and now I'm kind of happy of results. I like the looks of it.
Still, it's a mirror image map, so you probably won't like it

Hey,
- Just had a "crazy" thought whilst reading this thread. Why not look at the old heroes3 maps ( specially those that were popular )? And I am not only thinking of those one can find at the ToH look-up page but also those from the origional maps section from Restoration of Erathia cd.
- I am currently trying to dabble a bit with the editor myself and have started on ,All for one and Crimson and Clover ( both simplified ).
- Well it's just a thought anyways
- Guz
P.S. - I like DML too, mirrored or not.

Here's a very nice map I found. It's "too big for you size", yet it's highly detailed and makes an impression of a well thought, polished map.
Unfortunately, my comp chokes when I playing it, and it's not a low-end machine, mind you. So I can't really play it, but I liked what I saw in editor and I thought I'd share it with you anyway

I have restarted my map making career also....but am having some difficulties with this map editor.
I want to add some bridges etc. But in the list the bridge looks like it is angled and when I try and put it on map it is north to south facing and I cant turn it? DOes this mean that all maps if they use bridges will only have option for a north to south bridge? Or am I missing something...
Also I get the warning that I have intersect problem with terrain at xx:yy for example. What does this mean and how do I fix it? I got this error just by putting a random town on an open grass field lol. So what is it conflicting with? lol
My map will not be a perfect mirror....it will be balanced with all same starting mines and map stuff in main area but layout will not be perfect mirror.
And I intend on putting different terrain IF I can figure out how to put it. Everytime I click on what I think is a different terrain it doesnt change anything. So far only been successful in putting water.

see jinxer, if u have asked the same about heroes 4 game mechanics, being confused , not outraged, admittin there are lack of info concerning your knowledge, instead of stating that its a rush map or unbalanced, maybe u could have had some other faster and constructive progress in h4
just teasing u and kiddin, jinx, u know i always liked to explain "how-to" , but unfortunatelly u didnt ask (for) too much.
i for one, i think ill be in mapmaking even before i become a fair challenge to these days skilled legionaires or old veterans, tho ill do my best .
have a nice day

Quote: If you want my HONEST opinion... right now all the maps posted sort of suck, inlcuding Jb's... I'm looking at the complexity and aesthetics however. The muli maps from UBI have character. Right now we only have mirror image maps being posted... but that is what tourney players want. Perfect mirror images so nobody has an advantage, boring looking terrain with terrain sprites that repeat too much. I get bored with them quickly and move back to the UBI maps.
So nevermind... I have bias on nobody. It is a simple fact that JB is RELIABLE, with a HISTORY of DEDICATION to his maps -- and I have real communication with him with regards to his maps, and updating them.
haha actually I used to catch similar types of criticism for Heroes 3 maps, but look at what the most popular maps were back then? I can and will make more "professional" types of maps, but I received a lot of requests for Hourglass.. and Battle for honor was just the map I used to learn the editor. I decided to make 1 more map from requests.. which is Giant War. But after that.. I am going to get more creative with my map making. Ill tone down the maps and give them a new feel after that.

i'd like to quote you all with a Charles Bukowski poem
to the snow who took my poems
some say we should keep personal remorse from the
poem,
stay abstract, and there is some reason in this,
but jezus;
twelve poems gone and I don't keep carbons and you have
my
paintings too, my best ones; it's stifling:
are you trying to crush me out like the rest of them?
why didn't you take my money? they usually do
from the sleeping drunken pants sick in the corner.
next time take my left arm or a fifty
but not my poems:
I'm not Shakespeare
but sometime simply
there won't be any more, abstract or otherwise;
there'll always be money and snows and drunkards
down to the last bomb,
but as God said,
crossing his legs,
I see where I have made plenty of poets
but not so very much
poetry.

Tried to play this with nevermind - but our comps choked aswell. Looked really promising. Single player works though, not that it helps

All things being equal
The player that makes the better choices wins...take map biases away and that is what you are left with. JB's maps are unbiased where it is up to the players to win...not luck or unfair advantages.
Perfect tourney maps must be like this....random maps aside

Dead Man's Lake is a really good map. Most of the times on ubi.com, people request me to play that map. It's balanced and well designed, and gives me the feeling of those H3-H4 maps, whereby the player has alot to explore and fight for.
I don't really like the default maps designed by Nival as most of them are congested with no room for exploration until the 2nd week. Mines are closely guarded, it's hard to break through and even your second hero usually has nothing to do.
Dead man's lake ftw!

Wait till our game is finished Zilonite - you`ll regret that about "fun"
Right now this is my favourite map so far.
EDIT: Why can`t I keep my mouth shot and stay away from spectres...

Hey,
- A few things on the Hourglass map 1.3.
- I have loaded it ten times in a row, and I ( red) always get warmachines in the hut left of the middle castle... ? - sounds crazy, but nevertheless true.[EDIT] Well third time's the charm as the saying goes.. or in this case 11'th .. I pressed restart mission.... comes to mind here
- on the additional lvl 4 guard in the middle corridor ( leading to the "lighthouse" Island. I addition to that,I would say, put in a similar lvl 4 guard on the corridor, leading to the shipyard/resource Island too.
- Intended or not !? I am able ( both red and blue ) to actually zig-zag through the underdark area, where there are alot of creatures + resources ( the area I refer too as "diplomacy- area" ) And hence I get access to alot of free resources. As I said, intended or ?
- I have tested both sides several times and the underdark lvl 7 dwelling works as it should now ( even Necro/Dungeon dosent get mixed up now, as jrholdt mentioned previously ).
- Maybe - x-fer the Hill-fort with an additionally lvl 7 dwelling to make it more "worthwhile" the trip ?
- One can't dock on the "lighthouse" Island anymore ( without fighting ) as it should be.
- The gold mine ( in my opinion ) should be guarded too.
- ( and a half ) out of 5 in it's current state from me
- Guz

Finished reviewing dead mans' lake -- good stuff, posted it. However, one comment -- it seems that it will **always** come down to opponent breaking through the guardian to the southeast...
Now going through Random Wars.
