I choose Deep Hydras. They have no enemy retaliation, they attack in 3 different directions, they're great tanks, and they regenerate.

Always thought it was Rune Patriachs. Hate those spellcasters... it's like, nothing you can do to cheat the AI from casualties. I liked dealing with AI unicorns cause they're huge and don't fly. A few peasants can really block them out ^^

Opposite to cerberi X devils I think this topics comparing creatures always come back from the dead. Its just a matter of time. Don't be to harsh on the reanimators on this case... 
BTW, have nice feasts you all. Enjoy the end of solstice as an excuse for irrational eating/drinking behaviour. I'll be doing just the same.

I'd say zealots, though I have a high (some might say overly high) opinion of spellcasters in general. I can understand a lot of people saying unicorn.
Righteous might and cleansing are both very valuable, and I love Purge for potentially dispelling buffs with my shots, particularly advanced level master of speed and endurance. Aside from that they provide light range support when they're done casting and make excellent tanks when you need them. They don't serve a glamorous killing role which makes them easy to under-appreciate but IMO they're probably the best support unit in the game, unless you count high druids as a support unit.
Also for adventure map creeping you can purchase just a small stack of zealots and inquisitors and you pretty much cover all your low-level buffs to give you super crossbowman (or another stack if it's later game) If it we were just talking about duels I'd probably also say unicorns, but their role in creeping wins it over for me.

hehe purge is great & a sizable stack of zealots with high hp is good
By accident, certainly not by design, my 33 zealots were not next to my puppetted 32 pallys  boom lucky hit killed 5, purged the puppet & so the pallys charged the enemy immediately...gotta love that
Often purge will have a better chance than cleansing to succeed
It's a real pity that zealots have 15 mana so one can't cast both righteous might and cleansing (unless one has refined mana perk)
Apparently goblin witch-doctors with 2nd lvl rage can purge too...gotta think about that...
ofc I really go for the Ylthin-led child of light unihorns with regen spell - it's just pure creeping imbaness (yeah my mind got warped by a certain map where one gets these for FREE at the start of every game)

personally I think uncorns are one of the worst. They're so frail, I'm always afraid of attacking with them because of the retaliation. They're a good second striker at best. At least nightmares have a chance to not recieve retaliation.
I've always liked ranged creatures alot more than melee creatures, so for me rune patriarchs, liches and inquisitors get a higher place than the other ones, although of those I'd say inqiusitors are the worst.
I think djinns are the worst of all level fives. I've almost never played academy, so I've hardly used them myself, but when I've fought them I've always gotten surprised over the high numbers when I hover my mouse over them.

I think liches go with djinns in the same bag...with a tag that says "USE TO CREEP".
Hydras are nice in a lot of situations. Unicorns and nightmares are the best LVL5 in almost all situations but that doesnt make them the "most useful". Unicorns against stronghold and nightmares or executioners against undead loose some of their benefits. This makes me choose the zealot as the most useful lvl 5, a true savior.

the executionner has an awesome ability :
Cleave : this unit is able to one-shot any stack it attacks
not sure, but I think they are the best damage dealer in the whole game, right? (considering that cleave triggers, which happens all the time anyway )
djinns must hit pretty hard too, no? better than titan? (taking the initiative in account)

Deffinently Archlich because of those 3 reasons:
1.Looks soooo cool with that stuff and clothes.
2.Splash dmg it does is realy, realy great and usefull.
3.It have '' Arch'' in name xD (no, realy Archangel, Archdevil, Archlich when I have beatten Cyrus I thoug what would be next, Archmage, and poof here it is. We only need Archdragon(any) and we can say gg Ubisoft).

Best ones for me:
Liches - death cloud, useful dark magic spells, good stats and have good hp.
Horses - both nightmares and unicorns are fast and useful. Nightkares as Demons are brutal offesing race can deal quite large damage, unicorns can either support Dragons and pixes in front or help and protect archers. Both of them have good ini, abilities and role on battlefield.
Cheftains - they are tought guys, rage give them more power, can speeds up allies in battle, heavy damage with rage level 3 are insane.
