AHHhhhh.....**sniffff**.....

The time now is 7:00am Tuesday morning.
Coffee check: good

About that t.v., no no no. This is a resting place of comfort for the usual intraverted intellectual who might find a bit more solace among others of their kind.

My single cup is actually quite tall, probably twice the height of a normal cup. You might even say it's the size of a thermos, without that strange lid you know.

In my single cup I always put a few drops of milk with chocolate syrup and a single spoon of sugar.

Good morning everyone

So I was talking to Aculias about this that and the other thing, when the blinding pain shooting through my skull could not be ignored any longer

Today, I did not have my morning pot of coffee, and I think it nearly killed me. Instead of coffee i had a nice hot pot of green tea to start my day.

I'm now convinced that green tea is the devil. I mean, if it wasn't the devil it wouldn't be naturally decaffinated would it?

So now I have my coffee... I feel its comforting grip on my shoulder, its whisper in my ear "there there, you're not going to do that again are you?"

Damn straight I'm not!

I've given up refined sugar, and about a million other things that are bad for my body - but Coffee is here to stay!

Mmmmmmm *pours another cup *

I'll Be Damned!

Just as I was sitting down to the computer after having tried(for an entire day!) to not have even one single cup of coffee; what do I see? I see evil incarnate in the form of an internet post! Pandora you are so evil man I swear. I was so close but now, as I type this, I am enjoying the pleasure of a tall mug filled with my personally crafted strange brew. I sat, read your post, raised an eyebrow in dismay, felt like I was crashing the coffee party, and proceeded to remedy the social fopah. I thought I could do it. But then I didn't expect the devil's advocate to pay a visit to Heroes Community on the day of my tribulative(LoL I made that word up) trial. I should have known it was a hopeless attempt.

*sips the steamy surface*
Well Pandora, what do you have to say for yourself?

p.s. I guess I don't mind being a slave to the beverage as long as someone else shares the pain. You know what they say about misery eh? It truly loves company; it truly does. I love you Pandora; in a strange frustrated sort of way, LoL.

w00t!

Check it out baby! We're less likely to have liver cancer!
http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/conditions/02/15/coffee.cancer.ap/index.html
Quote:
A study of more than 90,000 Japanese found that people who drank coffee daily or nearly every day had half the liver cancer risk of those who never drank coffee. The American Cancer Society estimates that 18,920 new cases of liver cancer were diagnosed in the United States last year and some 14,270 people died of the illness. Causes include hepatitis, cirrhosis, excess alcohol consumption and diseases causing chronic inflammation of the liver.

Animal studies have suggested a 'protective' association of coffee with liver cancer, so the research team led by Monami Inoue of the National Cancer Center in Tokyo analyzed a 10-year public health study to determine coffee use by people diagnosed with liver cancer and people who did not have cancer. They found the likely occurrence of liver cancer in people who never or almost never drank coffee was 547.2 cases per 100,000 people over 10 years. But for people who drank coffee daily the risk was 214.6 cases per 100,000, the researchers report in this week's issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. They found that the 'protective effect' occurred in people who drank one to two cups of coffee a day and increased at three to four cups. They were unable to compare the effect of regular and decaffeinated coffee, however, because decaf is rarely consumed in Japan.

It's the caffeine in coffee that makes some people nervous and it has been shown in other studies to prompt mental alertness in many people. Some studies have suggested caffeine aggravates symptoms of menopause or intensifies the side effects of some antibiotics. Heavy caffeine use has been linked to miscarriage. But studies have also shown that a skin cream spiked with caffeine lowers the risk of skin cancer in mice.

I guess it's not so great for women who are looking to have a baby. But heck I've three kids and I've been fixed. My wife and I are done with making children! This is good news for myself and other coffee drinkers around the world! w00t!

I'm done baby-making too, guess I was lucky since I've been drinking coffee like an addict since I was 16

I think special attention should be paid to this part

fair trade coffee

Hi guys,
I am quite the coffee drinker aswell. I like mine black - straight up. I like dark and very strong coffee. the best place I found so far was Timothy's World Coffee (it is the only big coffee house that is Canadian here). I always take the Kenya Noir. I buy the beans and grind them before making a pot. Of course I also like Jamaican Blue Moutain, but it's sooooo expensive. During Christmas I get Egg Nogg coffee

Anyways, that's the intro, but the true point I was trying to get at was Fair Trade Coffee. You guys ever tried it? I don't find it as good, but it's such a noble cause and I feel bad about not buying as much as I should....

When buying beans, I only buy fair trade coffee.  It tastes the same as normal, although I am admittedly not a coffee connoinseur.  Also, it's hard to distinguish types of coffee through the haze of sugar and cream.    Unfortunately, fair trade is difficult to find, especially for specialty drinks at coffee shops.  My college has switched to fair trade coffee, so the Green Mountain brand is easily available here, but the mainline grocers don't have it.  Even health-food grocers don't always carry fair trade.  I can recreate coffee shop espresso concoctions at home with fair trade beans, but not frappacino/frappe/granita/frozen slushie things.  So, basically, my regular coffee is always fair trade but not "treat" coffee.

Also, I've seen fair trade coffee at the same price as regular coffee, but it's usually both organic and shade-grown, which drives the price up.

The stats I heard were that Ethiopian farmers only get paid three cents a pound for coffee that retails here for ten dollars a pound.    That's why, when offered a choice, I always go for fair trade.  The more people buy it, the more the stores will stock it.

You know what's weird?  Seeing one's name on the "Last 10 Replies" list when one hasn't made a new post in over a day.  Thanks, Pandora.    A day without surreality is like, well, a normal day.

Fair Trade coffee has become much more common here.  A few of the local shops have converted to all-Fair Trade.    However, I had to switch to tea because coffee started to upset my stomach.  Learning about teas & infusions is fun (even if a lot of the information is dubious).    I also like watching the dried-up stuff turn into real leaves in hot water...cheap entertainment...

Heh, I love the random Consisisms that make you scratch your head and go "Hmmmm?"

Truth be told, I miss Svarog too... the oceans have been much less gooey lately though

So anyways, toady I had to take my kids down to the school for a meet the teachers kind of thing. Basically the kids
have one on one time to get to know their teachers, and they're given some tests and such so the teachers have an idea of where the kids are. All in all, its a good idea - but today, it is pure misery outside, the temperature is 5 degrees Celsius (for you Americans I dunno what that is in Fahrenheit, I'd say not cold enough to kill you, but likely cold enough to make you cry Its also raining out, really really cold rain that feels like nasty little daggers falling from the sky that somehow seem to penetrate you to the very bone. So like I said, misery.

We get to the school, my kids each go off to their respective teachers and I am left there, wet and cold. I think the dark cloud of gloom was clearly visible above my head, in fact, it must have been actually because the gym teacher came up to me and said

"Have a coffee while you wait!" and directed me at the big old silver urn of coffee.

At this moment, the dark cloud above my head broke apart, and silvery light shone everywhere. I was sure Mr.S the PE teacher must have been an angel, as the light seemed to be coming right off his shiny bald head.

So I go and get my cup of heaven, naturally I don't sip it just yet, but hold it a minute - letting it warm my hands as I smile at my good fortune.

Then I take a sip.

Mr.S very soon looked less like an angel and more like a grinning maniacal demon in my eyes. No one with any ounce of goodness in them could call the crap they gave me coffee. I mean, sure... maybe he didn't know... just maybe he never tried it, so it was an innocent mistake. But maybe not. Maybe he - and not Green tea as I once thought, is actually the devil.

In any case - if that is what they call coffee in that school - I really worry about what other crazy things they might be teaching my kids.

~Pandora,

I did the same thing with my children at their school and they had coffee too. But I didn't even consider tasting it. Oh and listen . . . I was reading through your personal page yesterday . . . don't you think it's time to add a little more to it? I mean what if you you're one of those people who enjoys making 10 different paper-airplane models with shiny supermarket food wrapping paper for exquisite design? Just what if? The world may never know until you post it.

**sssiiippp, ahhhh . . .**

~Iris,
Love the new signature. As usual, you bring such beauty to this place. Thanks for being you.

Due to excessive bounce-off-the-wall-ness, I don't drink regular coffee, but I do enjoy a cup or three of decaf.

....and speaking of the meaning of life, what I want to know is this. Why is it so dang hard to use scissors with the wrong hand? You know, like when you have a thread hanging loose from the cuff of your shirt, and you're too lazy to take off the shirt to cut the thread. So you try to use scissors with the wrong hand. And you try, and try, and try, and you just can't make the damn things cut the thread. And you get so frustrated that you grab the thread with your teeth, thinking if you yank hard enough it will break the thread at just the right place, but noooooo, it never breaks at just the right place, it just gets longer and longer. So now you're really pissed and want to take it out on something. And there's that 4 meter long thread staring at you in challenge. Well, there's no way a wimpy little thread is going to get the better of you. So you wrap it around your hand a dozen times, stretch it some more, wrap it around your hand again, stretch more, wrap more, until both you and the thread are taut and ready for battle. You let out that primal scream passed down through your ancestors since the beginning of time, and pull with everything you've got......and the damn thing just stretches. Why why why???

Have you ever considered capitolizing the name you use for Heroes Community? Methinks you might find more suitability in your daily internet grind if you did! And so . . . decaf eh? Well . . . this might be something like the differences between catholicism and orthodoxy; caffenated and decaf you know?

Or perhaps not . . .
