Second, GO READ THE VN. It is infinitely better than any adaptation.

Ah, wikipedia said it was an eroge visual novel ^^ equals ero-game to me
I have watched some Melty Blood vids which was my first encounter with the series, looks like a good fighting game series too. I'm really enjoying the manga right now though.

Yeah it's way better. Frontier is just fanservice... bloody awesome fanservice to be sure, but it does kinda require you to have worshipped the original series first ^^
Be sure to check out Plus afterwards, was the last Macross series made by the original director.
@Elvin: Basically, somehow great warriors and commanders from all time periods are summoned to another realm to fight a war against zeh evil Black King by some mysterious individual. People like Oda Nobunaga and Hannibal for instance.
It's decent enough so far, main part of the awesome comes from the main character. Really like him.

Just watched Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. It's a very high quality production, I think. It's about this girl called Kaname Madoka who is a seemingly regular middle schooler. One day weird stuff starts happening and turns out that there are such things as witches that cause all sorts of trouble for people and can only be fought off by magic girls. To become a magic girl one needs to make a contract with this strange Kyuubei entity who is presented as the cute mysterious animal sidekick thing.
Sounds pretty stock, but I think that's the point; it plays with your expectations. There's psychological drama, sweet artwork and a plot that takes some cool twists. Though that's not really saying much.
What first caught my attention to it was after reading the visual novel Saya no Uta, a charming love story about a guy who sees everything as gore and the mysterious Saya, I became interested in the writer's, Urobuchi Gen's, other work. Apparently he's quite known for writing pretty gruesome stuff. Urobuchi Gen also wrote the light novel Fate/zero, a prequel to the famous visual novel Fate/stay night. I love Fate/stay night to no end (and I do it ironically), so I'm pretty interested in reading Fate/zero too.

Can you people recommend an anime similar to Record of Lodoss war? I like my fantasy RPG type anime but I am having trouble finding any.
Scrapped princess was pretty good, I enjoyed Claymore except the ending wasn't so great.

That ending went sooo against the main line of the story, I had to read the manga to see what happens. I prefer a berserk cliffhanger over a gantz/ claymore-we're-not-even-close-to-the-ending-but-we'll-tack-on-this-fake-thing-instead.
Though, I'm afraid I don't know of too many animes that are as you described it, except magic knight rayearth, maybe? But you'd better ask Joonas about that (though, he'd heartily recommend it, if you haven't watched it, yet.)

Wouldn't know about fantasy shounen animes, I don't watch them much.
