The idea is: all criminals may then walk around with guns as they please.

So only criminals own guns is what you are saying?  I was trying to figure out where you were going with the sword-gun comparison and all I could come up with is that you view guns to be dangerous.  Yeah, I know that.  We don't allow people to walk down the street brandishing swords in this country.

What I would like to know is if you have ever been to the United States of America or actually watched the news?  Law-abiding citizens do not start shooting other people when things go to Hell. Typically, the police or cowboys are brought in to handle any stampedes that threaten the peace and tranquility of everyday life.

Additionally, just because we are allowed to have guns by our constitution, doesn't mean we go around using them like toys.  Responsible gun owners understand the nature of the weapon.  Criminals are the ones who don't really care about harming others.  You say guns create more guns and to that I say "so what?"  It's not guns that are the problem here.  It's the people using the guns.  I've noticed that some countries have the mistaken idea that the United States is like the ol' West and that we solve all our problems with guns.  It really isn't like that at all.  They say "you have more gun-related crime!"  Of course, the United States has a greater population than most countries.  They say "if you got rid of guns, crime would go down."  That may be for awhile, until the criminals discover other ways to carry out their crimes.  The naysayers tend to apply the logic that if there were no guns, there would be no shootings.  Yeah, that's sound reasoning.  But why stop there?  If there were no cars, there would be no car accidents.  And car accidents are responsible for a lot more deaths than guns are, so logically, we should get rid of cars.  Then there's the counter that cars have greater utility and they are different.  Cars are used for transportation, guns are used for hunting and defense.  Both serve an important purpose.  Can you really say that transportation is more important than gathering food and protection?  I think all three are very important to the human race.

It's not really the mess you make it out to be.  You've been told guns are bad over and over again, so you are going to believe that.  That's fine.  But just keep in mind, gun or no gun, if someone wants to kill you they will find a way to do it.  Instead of focusing on the tool, focus on the source.  Focus on crime prevention instead of eroding self-defense.

Sad but true, most americans are afraid of everything.  Afraid to actually speak their mind.  Afraid of hurtting somebody's feelings.  Afraid to not be politically correct.
