Question

I used to post on these boards all the time, though hardly at all outside of the Other Side.  From what I've read over the years, the consensus seemed to be that H4 sucked and that H5 would be this great thing.

I suppose I'm in the minority (and I'm used to being that on HC , I liked H4.  I thought the campaigns were well done.  I liked the stories that went with them.  I have recently started playing H5.  Sorry I wasn't starting right when it came out.

Am I the only one that doesn't like what Ubisoft did to H5?  From what of the campaigns that I have played, it's terrible.  There is hardly any story at all, which was one of my favorite parts of H4.  It seems all the parts of H4 that I liked, they changed.

Unfortunately, I recently got a new computer that has vista and now H4 won't work so I'm stuck with H5.

Am I the only one that liked H4 more than H5?

Nope.

But, it seems you play these heroes games for their stories above all.  I've never been as interested in that in heroes games.  The subtleties of heroes 5 gameplay keep me coming back.

H5 storyline is nothing compared to previous titles. Cheesy, bad storytelling, no real surprises, no text boxes, campaign difficulty does not scale well. But H5 has strategical depth that its predecessors did not.

Meh, I didn't like h5 five, it just felt like a bad h3 with better graphics, which is quite typical of Ubisoft (putting more effort on the graphics). And I think that people dislike h4 since it's not similiar to the other games, which understandable since it's a sequal.

If they ever make a H6, the campaign is something they actually need to try at for once. The gameplay in H5 is awesome, but the campaigns keep getting progressively worse with each new heroes game. I’ve never finished a campaign in any heroes game, but I’ve tested all of them enough to get an idea of what they’re like.

They need to abandon the boring idea of “Do this mission, then do this mission, then do this mission” script, and instead have a world map where your heroes can travel to different regions, which make up different maps, and they carve an empire. And each hero can be the “magistrate” of a different region. The campaign should be dynamic and not predetermined.

The gameplay is awesome in H5,with lots of strategic elements.I like the skill system in H5.Well the gameplay I see that been the only good feature in H5.The storyline sucks badly,I mean, that the missions are very boring and you will probably want to finish the campaings because you want to see how the story will finish, thinking that will be beatiful, but well...isn't very good, and some elements are really hard to understand.

Agree with Blizz,if they (Ubi) want to make a perfect HoMM,they should have better storyline, like the H3 one,but that lets you to make new things every mission, not like kill X,find Y,conquer Z etc.

For some reason campaigns in strategy games (be they RTS or TBS) don't appeal to me, so I didn't play the H5 campaigns at all, except just taking a short look with cheats at a few cut-scenes.

And yes I have to agree H5 has a very good strategic element, there are so many creatures with unique abilities and heroes also have racials, etc.

But then I haven't played the other Heroes games so I don't know about them.

Argeed. Combine the Gameplay of H5 (TotE) to H3's Storyline and AI, and you have the best Game in the series. No doubt about it.

I never really like H4. It was a good game, but it didn't feel right imo. It's wasn't Heroes. H5 doesn't really fit with H1-3 either (storyline-wise), but at least it has an Atmosphere than matches Heroes 1-3. (when I played my first scenario in the Demo, the first things I noticed, where the familiar Leprechaun Gardens and Redwood Observatories . I was sold immedeately)

That's something very personal. For instance I find that atmosphere in H5 is nothing like the previous ones, beautiful yes but doesn't have the charm of H2 or H3. Even the disappearance of text boxes about the leprechaun, windmill, or even the artifact descriptions makes it lose in substance and immersion - it's all too automated. I still remember the sword of judgement where it says you are surrounded by zombies you lose control and when you come to your senses they are slain and you have blood in your hands. Or the story about the sprite that cannot carry the shield and you laugh at her so she decides to leave it to you But there are some neat parts in the campaigns where the map feels alive, breathing. Is this better? Worse? I say beautiful but the mystical feel of heroes is now long past.

I currently have H2-H5 installed, plus a bunch of mods... and I play them all from time to time. They are all essentially different games; while I enjoy the atmosphere and challenge of H2, I also love the replayability of H3, RPG feeling of H4 and the combat and skills of H5...

I Loved H4, mainly because of the unique system that was a chock for most weteran Homm series players. But Recently I've found something in Homm5 taht completley changed my world... Duel Mode Its so Freaking Awesome, allthough it could be like in Fallout tactics (you customise your hero and buy units for points But, nothing's Perfect
But hey If you dont put it in 3D you wont sell it..

I got tired of playing H5 today.  I can't stand it, I've found.  H4 won't work on my new computer and I haven't been able to find a solution that works anywhere.  I pretty much assumed H3 would have problems too, but I went ahead and tried to install it today.  Works great.  So now I've regressed to H3.

I just wish I had a copy of H2!  Back in the day I borrowed it from a friend for an extended period of time.  Actually, he's the one I bought my H3 from, come to think of it...

Actually, Wolfie, you have progressed to Heroes 3 from 5.
How come your H4 does not work on Vista? I have H4 complete, it works just fine. I guess you have the 64 bit Vista, I have heard about issues there with H4.

And no, you are not the only one who thinks H5 sucks big time. There are plenty. It's just that it's more "shiny" and appealing than its prequels, and certainly easier for casual gamers to gasp. On the marketing side, Ubi did a good job with the game.

Really? Then tell me how many casual gamers play Heroes 5 and how many play Heroes 3.

The fact that H5 has more units and more pixels per square inch does not make it more complicated.

Think of it this way, ask 100 people that played H3 and H5 and ask them how easy it was to get into either. Not noobs that played a bit and moved on. And we are into 2009 what did you expect? You can only enjoy H3 so much.
