Rightfully so. "Toxic" is an apt word.

Disney made a movie about a female superhero on Women's Day. White men on the internet reacted with fear and anger and sexist comments. Shame on them.

What people like you fail to see is that somewhere along the way the "good" cause was lost and it turned into all-out-attack targeted into a certain group of people. Have your fun for now. Guess society just needs to weather the storm until people turn to some other bs...

Here's a good video that sums it up

Meanwhile I'll probably go see Captain Marvel on the weekend.

Probably. You could have had YOUR way with your sexism and racism then, so you would be happy.

A bit of context would be helpful. In 2014 Marvel made a decision to diversify their comic book line.  People who had no history or interest in comic books were hired to diversify the comic books. All of the main Marvel characters got ridiculous reboots with characters that were non white male cis.  For example Iron Man became a black chick teenager.

Writing quality plummeted because SJW sensibilities took priority over good storytelling.  Part of the plunge in writing quality was that the normal process of editing went out the window because people became afraid of criticizing the new diversity hires.  The symbol of this process was Captain Marvel.  She was on all the posters and promotional materials and almost all of the writing for the comics were bad.  She's had multiple reboots because nobody wanted to buy her comics.

The guy at comics matters has documented this over the years and he describes the process as "failure being rewarded".

So now there's a Captain Marvel movie coming out and there's this theory going around that looks like this: [theory] Disney wanted to diversify the MCU by having Captain Marvel participate in the Infinity War part 2 and subsequently lead the MCU in phase 4.  Kevin Feige resisted because he wanted to finish the third phase with the original Avengers characters.  A compromise was struck such that two different versions of IW2 were created, depending on how Captain Marvel did.[/theory]

The theory is eminently plausible.  What's indisputable is that Captain Marvel is going to be prominent in the next phase of MCU films, just as she was in the Marvel comics.

So when you combine the Marvel comics background with all of the SJW publicity surrounding the film, and all the SJW elements within the film, you can see the proverbial writing on the wall, which is that Disney is going to wreck the MCU the same way that they wrecked Marvel comics and Star Wars and also the same way that others have wrecked Blizzard entertaintainment and Star Trek and Doctor Who and Science Fiction in general.  That's what all the furor is about.

Personally I don't really have any stakes in this.  I don't really have any sacred cows, although it does really annoy me when people inject SJW stuff into settings that are supposed to be historical.

In general I dislike major character changes like gender, skin or bodytype. I mean you could make superman a Chinese woman if you wanted - artistic licence and all - but what exactly is the point in that? I remember there was an anime series about wolverine where he is tall and pretty, what the hell is that!! Jackman was tall but at least his portrayal was not that of a prettyboy, that's just wrong.

Primarily an actor should capture the character but respecting the looks is also important. If you cannot identify the character he might as well be a new one.

The idea is that longstanding comic book characters have all undergone many reboots, so you can always reboot a character with a different race or sex. It might turn out the series is poorly written but that can happen without changing the sex or race. Not all series on Superman or Batman or Ironman are equally popular; some are considered better than others.

You could make an entirely different character but the reality is that comics are a business and having an easily recognized name makes it easier to market and sell. So refitting some of the white male characters that have been around for decades was sometimes seen as easier than trying to sell a new character from scratch.

Spiderman was rebooted as a black Hispanic and Sony made a movie on him that was better than the MCU Spiderman in my opinion.

That much is common business sense but some changes are so bad or so radical that you just can't bring yourself to care. As for the costume being passed on, that's a whole different case. It's not a single character so there is more freedom regarding origin, character or power variations. They may still be compared to the previous one(s) but nobody can blame the author for making them different.

Where? Can you link me a video or an article from some white guy who wrote such things? I watched a bunch of videos on YT about this issue, and everybody has friendofgunnar's angle -  quality being dropped while  (bad) politics are injected. Maybe I missed the videos you describe as being a general phenomenon, white men saying sexist and racist things, so please link me one.

Hope it is mildly entertaining and hint for a hype to the next Avengers.

@Sal:

A casual search of the YouTube comments section. Thousands of people harshly judging a movie that they've never seen before because they don't like what it represents. I mean, obviously they don't say that literally because almost nobody admits that to other people or to themselves but that is nonetheless the mindset.

I saw the movie, and yes, it's not as good as Wonder Woman and definitely not as good as Alita: Battle Angel, which was a lot more stimulating and thought-provoking. The humor is sometimes a little stale and it doesn't have the catchy vibes that many of the Marvel movies have. It's not as good as Ant Man or Black Panther or Guardians. It's kind of average. But there is no manhating or any of the other make-believe crimes that the movie was accused of. It shouldn't have gotten dragged through the dirt the way that it was but that's what happens when millions of males - many of them with brains that been physically neurologically restructured/damaged from regular pornography consumption - become triggered at the slightest sign of female power. They might be better suited for Saudi Arabia or some other strongly anti-female country. Otherwise they can continue their lonely, isolated existence as they wonder why they never found love in life when the answer to the question is staring back at them in the mirror every morning.

That is my opinion. If you decide to see the movie yourself maybe you can offer your thoughts.

So anonymous people on youtube don't have literal sexist comments but you know already they are all white males?

Nobody gets triggered at female empowering, actually males are happy to work with females, they can live together at home but not at work, what is this nonsense? What people get angry at is cheap and extremely offensive accusations which come with feminism politics, most of them build on no evidence at all. I don't know how you guys invented this narrative that males are suddenly afraid of losing power, but is totally false. 99,9% of males have no power at all, they struggle and try to match the high expectations the society created for them. Reading in the press that boys should be taught to not rape and that their masculinity had a very negative impact on societies - while evidence shows the opposite, this is what makes people angry.

Of course I won't go see such movie, after listening to that actress awful comments. She politicized her role and when you mix art with politics you pick a side.

I'm not sure if we're going to get anywhere, but just a few things:

A) The movie was already political simply for existing. It was the first MCU movie with a female lead and this agitates some people.

B) The only alternative for Brie Larson is if she completely ignored all of the controversy surrounding the film, including refusing to answer questions directly asked to her about it. I honestly don't know what you expect her to do.

I don't know about the controversy around the movie, if you remember my first post here, it was about why a white male would go see a movie thus give bucks to an actress who openly said in a press conference that she doesn't give a snow about white males reviews. Nothing else, I don't care if a transgender squirrel takes the role of Hulk, Iron Man or whatever.

The movie was made with women in mind, just like Black Panther was made with black people in mind.

That doesn't mean white people or men can't enjoy those movies but different movies are made with different audiences in mind. She clarified in the exact link you posted that she doesn't have anything against white men.

So, yeah, I don't think you're being reasonable.

She is a little stupid, isn't she? Even if everything she is saying is true, polarizing people instead of let them make up their mind about the movie(s) in question is only going to reflect badly on her and marvel. Or repeatedly adding that she doesn't hate white dudes, lol. Her manager must be facepalming non-stop..

Maybe not but actors not being the brightest tools in the shed isn't anything new. Occasionally you have people like Natalie Portman or Tom Hanks or Mel Gibson (I know Mel Gibson has been kind of dick but he is a highly skilled director and this is pretty much indisputable) but most actors get their job by either being charismatic or by knowing the right person.

That's where you're wrong. It would be a normal movie with a female lead, but you're bs propaganda made it into some kind of feminist manifesto. Like everything these days. I would've never think of this movie as feminist, moreover it appears there are no signs of this in the movie whatsover. But because how you accuse us white males of always taking the same stance criticizing everything female, you do the same by using every f*cking chance to push your propaganda on us. What the hell was even Larsons problem to go out and snow about white critics of a movie that appears to be the worst Marvel movie in a long time? Let me guess, because it's TRENDY in Hollywood.

I'm sick and tired of the snowstorms that every comic book movie turns out these days. What's next, LGBT will cry there's no gay character in Marvel Phase 4 so they'll make a movie about Peter Parker coming out?

Where are the times people went to cinema to watch for ex. LotR and they were in awe of the movie instead of snowing how there's no female in the Fellowship?

Saying that 67% of reviews were written by white males doesn't automatically means that those white males kept back black people from writing reviews. So while the percentage may be true (I've been told that looking at people skin to stereotype their ideas was the definition of racism but it seems it does apply only one way), the conclusion she puts from is sjw crap.

Here's a youtube comment that caught my attention.

[I was REALLY looking forward to seeing this film. Then Brie Larson spewed the usual NPC rhetoric about evil 40 year old white guys.  How do you get someone to think about elephants?  Tell them not to think about elephants.  She ruined the film for me: if I did go, I wouldn't be able to suspend disbelief; I'd just see a woman in a costume surrounded by special effects who said 40 year old white guys are evil.  Sigh...]

That looks like the definition of what an actor should avoid, no?
