White Snake

A Chinese animation about a love between human and a snake demon. You would assume it's for kids, but it's actually pretty bloody and grim. And has sex even . Guess that's how Chinese do their cartoons But seriously as a "grown up" kid I really enjoyed it. I like these epic and action packed kind of stories and the animation is top notch. Not only beautiful Chinese vistas, but some epic monster fights (and Chinese mythology is brimful of epicness). The story itself is pretty nice and even optimistic I would say (if you ignore the body count XD).

I kind of liked the 1997 version of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. The actors were all good.

I've been watching or rewatching a few dramas:

Beast of No Nation

Kid recruited into war as a child soldier in the NDF. Really good acting and pretty sad.

Padre Pio: Miracle Man

Life of the mystic who would eventually become a canonized saint. Takes you through his early childhood to his final years. Includes a good bit on his trials with the bishop. Sergio Castellitto is a really good actor.

Room

A girl is kidnapped and kept as a sex slave in a garage for years, including raising a son inside of it. The son is the most interesting part of the movie. The actress is Brie Larson, who is also Captain Marvel

I bought used Solaris (1972) movie. I hope color, when another white and black color therefore two different version. It paid €7 in Finnish subtitle also rare in Finland, but you (Finnish) can get a Solaris, version is UK subtitle, and it pay €30 in Helsinki, Finland. Ok Solaris is famous from CCCP/Russia. Aged 15 can watch Solaris. BBC gave 5 star, and other old western movie magazine gave 4 star.

Time Trap - Netflix 8/10

I wasn't expecting much from this film, but I loved it. Had me hooked from start to finish.

The Devil All the Time

I think it's one of better Netflix originals. Good ol' American drama that you can immerse yourself in. The acting, the cinematography, the music - everything is laid out well. It also shows that, unsuprisingly, religion can be source of misery. Ofc, it's the people who twist it, but the story can make you reflect on how it can mess with common folk. But it's actually the background, the plot iteslf makes religion a common thread, but it's actually about interwining stories of a group of people. A good watch.

8/10

Bill & Ted's "Face the Music" captured the soul of the old movies exactly. A wonderful family film. I was surprised by how good this movie was; usually older movies or series brought back tend to have that "nostalgia nickel" feel to them, and they tend to disappoint. This movie is like they made a 3rd movie right after the 2nd one; it's that flawlessly paired. Watch it even if you never saw the first two. It's everything good about movies.

Also watched Mulan(the non-animated version from this year). Another great family film; this one far surpasses the original animated version. Give it a watch; you won't be disappointed. I was surprised, yet again.

Maybe it's because of the volatile times we're living in, but these two movies are a breath of fresh air. Of GOOD air.

i watched "jaws 2" again(it's been years). i have to say, i think it's every bit as good as the first, despite the fake-ass sharks. the acting is actually better in the second, because of a few small roles in the original being flubbed by garbage actors and actresses.

really, the only thing bad about both movies, are the super-fake sharks. i'd love to see both movies retouched seamlessly with a cgi shark(like the one in "the shallows", which is perfect).

Today's cinema in a nutshell:

https://variety.com/2020/film/news/lion-king-sequel-director-barry-jenkins-1234786355/.

Made a movie that got lukewarm reception, but earned milions cus apparantly people will throw money at any s*it as long as it has a famous name attached to it.

Let's create a sequel then. Hmm, how to score more points you ask? Hey let's take a director who's only connection with the movie is that he watched it when babysitting his sisters kids. And he's black. And famous for making indie movies about other blacks. Knows literally jack s*it about kids movies. Oh, and he ofc uses the movie to accent "muh skin color" cus apaprently black people have nothing else in their heads these days then wanting to show how proud they are of their ancestry, prove me wrong. This is so me me me. What happended to making movies for everyone, simply becasue you're a director first and foremost?

They have to start tanking first I want to see how many feminist propaganda films we're gonna be seeing in 2-3 years after all the 2019 failures. Except Disney, they can get away with it because of popular franchises.

The second Lion King simply failed because you cant give CGI characters expressions like in an animation. They went for photographic realism, thought it would be impressive but people loved the original because of the warmth, which is impossible with such CGI no matter who the director is. The remake was doomed because the whole point was to make a CGI remake.

This is such circular logic, anytime somebody black (or female) is put on an important position you automatically assume it’s because of political correctness and then you claim there is no racism. That “indie movie” you talk about, Moonlight, won the awards for best picture both in Golden Globes and Oscars and is considered by many critics one of the best films of the last decade. What else does he have to win to prove himself, to be considered a worthy director?

Yep, then tell me why the sudden interest? Where was Disney where black artists stated time and time again that they don't feel they are treated with respect inside Hollywood. This problem arose back in the 90s already (https://shadowandact.com/these-6-black-directors-who-got-their-start-in-the-90s-speak-to-how-the-system-actively-worked-against-them, and Hollywood tackles it almost 30 years after!). USA has created its own form of racism, and now they pretend they are the enlightened lot by "making things right". It's totally phony. I am not criticizing the person himself, he's just going with the flow, but this whole "inclusion" paranoia. Plus in my post I am pointing out to the fact that the guy has completely no experience with family movies, but he's a popular name and black to boot. And now we are reaching a point where instead of doing a job it's all about "let's show them!". Will this cycle ever end?

Personally I would feel offended if I knew I was treated like a "token" black person cus #blm. Although I assume money does not stink. That said it's like someone said now we take a polish director because "they know how to make movies about Poland right"?

Meanwhile movies will be evaluated based not on their artistic values, but percentage of minority representations. Aside from box office results ofc, becasue this is another great point of reference right?

Lion King takes place in Africa, so yes they paid tribute to African ancestry in the movie this time. Personally, I didnt even notice it while watching, I recognized James Earl Jones of course, who is also in the original and who is one of the most recognazible voices on Earth because; Darth Vader. But other than that, it’s not like they were talking like “yoo, what’s up my n...” or something. Why should the director consider himself a token when called upon such a project, he is a director with a friggin’ Oscar.

Are you claiming Moonlight also won all those awards because of politics, because if you do, that is exactly what I call circular logic, if everytime something done by a minority succeeds, you’ll claim it’s because they are a minority, how do you tell when it has actual artistic value?

And it’s not like a neccassity but a Polish director’s cultural heritage could of course play as an advantage when making a film about Poland. The Godfather was about Italians and the writer, the director, the composer are all Italian, does it help, yes it does.

If you don't know Lion King, the original 1994 animation, was selected by National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" https://variety.com/2016/film/news/national-film-registry-2016-the-birds-the-lion-king-thelma-louise-1201940318/

What the heck? Where did I claim such a thing. The only point of my post was that a guy who so far made dramas and biopics suddenly gets to be a director of a family-friendly adaptation of a cartoon. Did they maybe propose to him making a live adaptation of "An American Tail"? No.

And Barry Jenkins is USA born director. He can very much know about his african ancestry only from books.
