No I mean you're focusing on the wrong stuff. You remind me of people who are also focusing on texture detail in a game, instead of the damn game itself

Let me remind you that he was the focus of the movie.

If you want to talk about the struggle between tradition and innovation, the fading away of old values and samuraiisation of the people of Japan, those are all interesting topics, but those were brushed by to give way to this awesome character that fought indians, learned japanese in a few months, spoke with the emperor of Japan and fought in this big battle.

Oh, and another thing: why does a romance plot have to be shoe-horned into everything?
I do not decide my focus, it's the bad directors that decide whose face hogs the screen for 70% of the time

Of course he was the focus. I'm still not getting what you mean by "bad acting" then. I thought you were focusing on stuff like "right, a foreigner always becomes a 'master' of the natives' arts" or something like that.

Words "bad acting" didn't pass my lips

I just found him... Ill-fitting... That's that. I may have been a little ticked off when he becomes a sword fighter and entirely accepted into their culture, because it makes me want to vomit 'twilight' all over the place. It's just... I don't know, don't like it, that's all. I may have my emotional, and thus subjective, reasons for those.

Last Samurai was pretty good, but pretty bad as far as historical accuracy is concerned.  If you want to see some good portrayals of samurai, you should really be watching Kurosawa.

Tom Cruise isn't a bad actor, though.  He's pretty good, actually.  But he's just so damn wacked that I almost can't take him seriously in anything anymore.

I guess it all comes down to what you're looking for in a movie.

Precisely historically accurate movies have a tendency to suck in my opinion; though not always. Patton was an excellent movie, but that's probably because Patton was a pretty quixotic person in real life, so a movie about him is bound to be interesting.

I didn't really get any profound lesson out of Last Samurai, and I wasn't looking for one; I just thought it was a neat movie.

@Dagoth

Most of them are in black and white and subtitled, but if that doesn't bother you, then you're in for a treat.  Seven Samurai, Roshomon, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo and Ran are some of the best movies ever made.  Most of them have been remade (more than once, in some cases) by western directors under different names, and a few of them are based on Shakespeare's plays.

Hell you should watch just about anything starring Toshiro Mifune and you won't be disappointed.

@Blizzard

I don't mean it has to be 100% accurate.  But some movies just make crap up out of nowhere.  But overall I agree, I enjoyed Last Samurai.  Don't really have much of a complaint.

I watched Stalker, as long as it doesn't have a half hour of empty landscape passing by I'll manage.

EDIT: anyone enjoyed the accuracy in Troy?

What accuracy?

As for Tom Cruise he may be a wacko but I enjoy his acting. That reminds me, anyone seen minority report? Now that was a lot of fun.

I loved Last Samurai. It might be all over the place with historical facts, but it was a damn well-made movie. The images were nothing short of amazing. The fight in the woods ... wow. And the scenes with the cherry flowers ... beautiful.

@Alc: I noticed you're really big on visuals.

@Xer: Lot's of women still are.

@Elvin: Yea I agree. I also hear Russell Crowe gets into fights and stuff IRL, but he's still played excellently in quite a few movies. That wouldn't change if he ran out naked with a squid on his head.

Taken was fun, even if there were a few 'convienient' things.  Minority Report was .. odd, but yes I liked it.
Troy was not exactly historically accurate, but it was a great movie.

This week I get to watch the watchmen.  The question I have is..does that create a sort of infinate loop?  I watch the watchmen watching me watch them watching me ... etc?

Troy was as lame as it gets Some of the lines or scenes in the movie are so ridiculous that you can't take it seriously if you wanted to. And mythology butchering aside it feels wrong, so very wrong.

I never did finish watching Troy, I liked the battles I did get to watch.  The theatre I went to thought it was a good idea to make the movie as loud as humanly possible and I had to retreat.  Then again I loved Independance Day, and for some reason a lot of people didn't...

The Sherlock Holmes movie looks like it will be a lot of fun. It seems like a lot of action for a Sherlock Holmes movie, but maybe they were just juicing up the trailer:
