I've got a small problem I'm hoping someone can help me with.
I've followed the directions at the bastard page and talked to Pan, thanks again , but I can't get the Text Editor to open the Rmg.txt file. It gives me an "Access Violation at XXXXX."
What am I doing wrong? Or has anyone else encountered this problem?
Editted to say: Thanks Haile73 and Pan for helping me. It works now! :-D

Madmartigan..I am ever grateful!!
Madmartigan emailed me the edited rmg.file
All I had to do was save it in my Heroes3 data file..
Now all the sh!tty templates are no more when I host
This is gonna save me HOURS of restart time
I strongly recommend that all random luvers get this...
again, my gratitude mad...

Here
http://www.hommbastards.com/randoms/randoms.html
there is the link to the file, i removed only the templates i dont like, not all players dislike the same templates.
Although many like newcomers, dragons, and lith templates are on everyones no play list. However i have had some very enjoyable games on lith maps(95% are crap though)

Hey Ironmlh,
I tried using Wordpad but it didn't work. Something to do with how my browser saved the txt file I think. I then tried to use the text editor from the Bastards page. That didn't work either.
Finally, Haile73 spoke up and told me to extract it from the log files using the CRbanks editor. And viola, it worked!
Now I too can experience the magical might of the not so random randoms.

blarg, stop this "thanks haile73" crap already. Use the force and create some playable templates!
Anyone made any progress lately?
Some things I noticed (not too interesting I'm afraid, but on topic at least ):
Zone Connections:
I think it's useful to draw the basic design of the template on paper before using the editor. Give zoneIDs according to which zones are adjacent. This results in a better design of the generated map imo. Still it's funny how much the map drawn on paper differs from the map generated, lol.
Towns:
Don't forget to put a town or two into some of the neutral zones. If there aren't enough towns, it often results in no road leading away from player's starting castles. Hence, you will be blocked more often than not.
Testing:
I'm assuming everybody's using the map editor to test templates (and not starting the game, lol). Scroll back a few pages to find out how. However, it seems that after modifying the txt file you should close the map editor and restart it before the changes apply. (I might be wrong though, any experiences?)
That's it for now... hopefully there will be more "Tips of the Day"

yeah u gotta do that. gl with ya editing.
with the connections there is 4 numbers after it with min/max players. This allows new connections if u get more than 2 players for example. I copied and pasted connections that were for 5 or 6 player games then wondered why i wasnt getting them.
also found out a pretty much useless thing, if u change mine guard strength from average to strong, ur wood/ore will be guarded.

All randoms use templates. There is no such thing as a completely random random map There is a standard 3do list that is partially described in the start of this thread.
near the end of this thread we discovered that customised templates are possible.

so if u have played randoms, u r using templates whether u know it or not.
A template is like a guide for the random map generator. it tells the generator how many areas (zones) there should be on the map and how they are linked together, and what sort of size monsters on map (hence size of treasures)

getting started with rmg.txt
http://www.hommbastards.com/randoms/Rmg.txt
save that file in your data directory. Randoms wont be any different initially BUT you now can edit this file to cut out templates u dont like.
wordpad is fine for chopping out whole templates, but if you want to edit any columns eg. to eliminate necro towns, then u need this editor:

this therad is both very interesting and very scary. Until now i thought that randoms are impossible to edit. I found some great info about some templates here. But, as far as i can see(and what angelito told me), nowdays there are other more popular templates. So how about some of you vets share some info about some of the new stuff(panic, blockbuster, jebus, balanced, skirmish, true random, midnight mix, extreme, etc.)
